TEAM Solent boss James Taylor believes winning the Sydenhams Premier title will be a tall order because of the sheer volume of games his side have got to play.

But, as Hamworthy United can now testify, the Students possess enough firepower to go all the way.

Buoyed by Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bodmin Town which carried them through to the FA Vase last 32, the Southampton Solent University side were in a hungry mood last night as they ruthlessly dismantled the Hammers 7-0 at Test Park to turn the heat up on the Wessex’s top sides.

“The league’s the hardest one for us because of the amount of games we’re going to be playing,” said Taylor.

“We’re still in three cup competitions (the FA Vase, Southampton Senior Cup, Sydenhams League Cup), but if we keep going as we are, we’ve got a chance because everyone is beating everyone else at the top of the league.

“I’d like to win all four competitions we’re in, but that’s probably not realistic. We might end up with a lot of silverware or we might end up with nothing, you never know. But one thing’s for sure, it’s better than having nothing to play for!”

Solent took a while to warm to their task on a chilly Monday evening, but once Jim Orvis had broken the deadlock in the 37th minute, there was no holding them.

Skipper Jesse Waller-Lassen doubled the lead before the break and it was one-way traffic from there on in.

“It took us a while to get our first goal, but the second half could have been any number,” said Taylor. “Hamworthy had a couple of decent players and had the odd chance going forward, but there were no major threats on our goal.

“We had control of the ball for most of the game and did very well.”

Curtis Thorn, goal-scoring hero of the Bodmin win, netted Solent’s third and, as the floodgates opened, Tobi Adekunle weighed in with a header.

Jemal Wiseman buried goal number five before Waller-Lassen and Adekunle completed a brace apiece.

Solent have come a long way since a patchy start to the campaign while they were waiting for their university contingent to report for duty.

Now, with their full quota of players back in town and league and cup glory to aim for, they could well emerge as the headline act of the Wessex season.

“We’re pretty settled at the moment with just George Butler out injured,” said Taylor. “Everyone’s available most of the time and they’re all keen to keep their place in the team.”

Next up for the Students is a league trip to Horndean on Saturday.
