TEAM Solent have got their wish of a home draw in the last 16 of the FA Vase.

James Taylor’s lone Sydenhams Premier survivors will host the winners of the South Shields v Morpeth clash on Saturday, January 28 at Test Park.

Morpeth, the Vase holders, were fuming when their fourth round tie at South Shields was abandoned on 82 minutes due to a floodlight failure.

They were leading 4-2 at the time against ten-man South Shields who'd had former Premier League star Julio Arca sent off.

The FA have decreed the game must be replayed on or before this Saturday – bad news for Morpeth boss Nick Gray who said straight after the floodlights failed: “For me, it’s the 82nd minute and the game’s gone. If this goes to a replay, I’ll feel robbed.”

There are no such tensions in the Solent camp following an exceptional second-half display in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Croydon courtesy of goals from Tobi Adekunle, Ellis White and skipper Jesse Waller-Lassen.

No sooner had yesterday’s draw been made than manager Taylor watched the highlights from South Shields on YouTube.

And despite Saturday’s scoreline leaning heavily in Morpeth’s favour, he is not sure which of the Northern League Division One big-hitters will come out on top.

He said: “Morpeth are the holders, so they’re obviously a good side, but it was all South Shields until they had a player sent off. I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that Morpeth will win. South Shields (second) are doing better in the league than they are, but it sounds like both of them have got big budgets.”

As a university side, Team Solent don’t splash the cash, but they are blessed with silky-skilled talent like Waller-Lassen who came through the Spurs academy and spent a year there as a pro.

“We usually play decent football, that’s what we’re known for, and if we play well our game doesn’t suit other teams,” said Taylor. “They’re all physical, whereas we like to get the ball down and pass it.

“As long as the pitch is good – which ours will be – we’ll give it a good go.

“It’s a great draw for us. If we’ve got the intention of going all the way to Wembley, we’ve got to beat the best.

“And if we play as we did in the second half against Croydon, we’ve got a chance of beating anyone.”

Morpeth lifted the Vase at Wembley in May by jolting favourites Hereford 4-1. They became the fifth Northern League club to win the trophy in eight years.

Three Wessex teams have won it – Wimborne Town (1992), Winchester City (2004) and Sholing (2014).

FA Vase fifth round draw: Cleethorpes v Atherton Collieries, Southall v Exmouth Town, Bromsgrove Sporting v Bristol Manor Farm or Melksham, Crowborough Athletic v Coleshill Town, Hinckley AFC v Buckland Athletic, Newport Pagnell Town v Sunderland RCA, Ely City v Sporting Khalsa, Team Solent v South Shields or Morpeth.
