SALISBURY could do with a cash boost, according to chairman David Phillips.

Steve Claridge’s Whites yesterday edged back into the Southern One South & West play-off zone with a last-gasp 1-0 victory at struggling Wantage Town.

But while Phillips told last week’s fans’ forum that club accounts are in good order, he said that additional sponsorship or a large donation would be useful.

“We could do with some more money,” he told the meeting.

“The commercial side has done pretty well up to the Christmas period, but it does tend to fall off a bit in the second half of the season.

“When you get things like a £3,000 water bill, that makes you suck in your breath a little bit.

“There are some big overheads and this place (the Raymond McEnhill Stadium) costs a lot of money to run.

“We have to be very conscious about making sure we are getting best value for everything we can and being careful with what we do.”

After missing several presentable chances at Wantage, Salisbury broke home hearts in the fifth minute of stoppage time when ’keeper Eddie Cavanagh parried Lewis Benson’s vicious free-kick straight to predatory match-winner Justin Bennett.

“It wasn’t so much of a tough game as a tough pitch and we missed a lot of chances,” Claridge reflected.

“I thought it was going to be one of those days with Justin hitting the post, but in the second half we kept doing the right things.”

Salisbury are away to Shortwood United on Tuesday (7.45pm) in the Southern League Challenge Cup third round.
