GOSPORT Borough are staring down the barrel of relegation from the National League South.
Saturday’s humiliating 6-0 home hammering by Hemel Hempstead Town, combined with Whitehawk’s 2-0 win at Margate, means Borough have slipped into the bottom three for the first time.
Hemel’s on-loan Ebbsfleet striker Charlie Sheringham did the bulk of the damage with a hat-trick, supported by Jordan Parkes, Jake Robinson and Callum Daniel.
To add to Borough's woes, they lost former Eastleigh striker Tony Lee to injury after 84 minutes, leaving them to see out the game with ten men having used up their subs.
Manager Alex Pike remained defiant afterwards, stating: “You either stand up, fight and be counted or you drift into the background and get relegated – and I’m certainly not going to drift into the background.”
While Gosport are floundering, Poole Town continue to thrive on the pitch.
The Dolphins strengthened their grip on fourth spot with a 2-1 win at East Thurrock courtesy of a Steve Devlin penalty and an 80th-minute Marvin Brooks winner from James Granger’s cross.
