BURSLEDON-BASED Serena Vincent stunned her rivals with a huge throw of 14.51 metres to take the UK Indoor under-17 women’s shot put title in record-smashing style at Sheffield.

The Gregg School pupil, a member of City of Portsmouth AC, was one of three Hampshire athletes to enter the competition along with Southampton AC duo Amaya Scott and Sam Callaway.

From a field of 19, all three Hampshire girls made the cut for the last eight which, in itself, was a remarkable achievement.

Scott – in the upper year of the age-group – was consistent throughout with her best throw of 14.20m gaining her third spot on the podium.

But it was rising star Vincent who, like Callaway, is in her first year as an under-17, who set the competition alight.

Her fourth round throw of 14.51 seemed to knock the will out of the reigning champion who had been leading with a put of 14.42.

Not only was Vincent’s winning throw a personal best, it smashed the all-time UK Indoor Championship record for her age-group.

It is her second title of 2017, having picked up the Southern England crown in January.

That followed a cracking 2016 which recently saw Vincent named as Young Sportsperson of the Year at the Eastleigh Sports Awards.
