GUY Whittingham’s radio commitments mean he rarely gets the chance to see his teenage son Alfy playing for AFC Totton.

But the former soldier, nicknamed ‘Corporal Punishment’ during his free-scoring days with Portsmouth, made two trips to the Testwood Stadium last week and witnessed no fewer than ten goals.

Having surrendered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Bideford on Tuesday, Totton were nowhere near as generous against Bishop’s Cleeve yesterday.

Again they cruised 3-0 up through an early own goal and brace man Nathaniel Sherborne before a superb individual effort from AFC Bournemouth loanee Curtis Young set the seal on a 4-0 Southern One South & West success - the Stags’ biggest win of the season.

Although 18-year-old Alfy didn’t get the Whittingham name on the scoresheet, he was involved in Totton’s first three goals before making way for another promising youngster, 17-year-old Alex Haynes, after being booked.

It was from Whittingham’s driven cross-shot from the left that Cleeve’s Aaron Drake deflected the ball in for an own goal with less than four minutes gone.

Sherborne doubled that advantage on 29 minutes from the penalty spot having been fouled as he tried to cash in on another Whittingham delivery.

And two minutes after the break, the on-loan Havant & Waterlooville youngster completed a hat-trick of assists, leading Cleeve a merry dance before cutting the ball back for Sherborne to slam in at the near post.

With Whittingham’s youthful exuberance threatening to boil over, he was substituted on 63 minutes, keeping his powder dry for tomorrow’s Easter Monday clash at Hampshire rivals Winchester City (3pm) where he had a brief spell earlier this season.

Totton could have scored at least another couple in the closing stages against a Cleeve side who lost goalkeeper Mat Wieczorek to injury after 20 minutes. With no sub 'keeper available, they had to entrust the gloves to striker Shane Bumphrey.

His goal led a charmed life until the 85th minute when Young brilliantly weaved his way through the massed ranks of green shirts before calmly slipping the ball past Cleeve’s makeshift stopper.

A satisfied Whittingham smiled: “My dad doesn’t often get to games because he’s with Radio Solent, but the last two times he’s been here I’ve played well.

“I’d like to make it as a pro like he did.

“I’m signed on at Havant but I wasn’t playing there and I needed to get out and learn men’s football. Louis (Langdown, Totton manager) is playing me every week and I’m learning how physical men’s football can be. I’m starting to progress and get involved in goals.”

Langdown felt his side should have scored more, but said: “I’m just happy we’ve finally got a comprehensive win.”

Whether Totton can produce a repeat performance at Winchester tomorrow remains to be seen.

“The squad’s wafer thin and we’re a very young side,” said Langdown.

“Will it be too much for us playing Tuesday-Saturday-Monday? It could well be. We’ve taken a few bruises too, but we’ll try and be as positive as we were today.”
