Anglers heading afloat from local ports continue to find a wide variety of species.

Martin Smith (Hamble) bagged himself a superb brace of plaice while fishing from his own small boat ‘Hunter’. They both fell to lugworm tipped off with a small slither of squid.

Anglers heading afloat in charter boats have also been finding some nice fish with Bob Nunn landing a 3lb 1oz black bream while fishing from ‘Last Laugh’ out of Lymington.

Paul Campbell recorded a bream of 3lb 7oz from the same boat.

A 3lb 8oz plaice caught by Robin Lane was the highlight during a Lymington bait supplied boat league which is supported by Loni’s of New Milton.

Apart from the plaice, various wrasse species were recorded along with whiting pout, pollack, smoothhound, whiting and several spotted rays.

Results: 1st Ed Taylor 238pts, 2nd Malcolm Stote 202pts, 3rd Chris Ellis 190pts, 4th Robin Lane 165pts.

A top prize of up to £500 will be on offer when the Lymington Club stage their annual spring open shore competition with fishing between Hordle and Hurst Castle on May 20.

Fishing times will be from 7pm to midnight with registration getting underway at the Needles Eye Cafe from 5.30pm. Details from 01425-616323.

Poole Bay Small Boat Club's annual charity Kayak plaice competition was again a great success with 38 competitors heading afloat from Sandbanks.

The fishing was far better than previous years with over 20 competitors landing plaice.

The winner collects the Cam Clearie Memorial Trophy for the longest plaice. On this occasion Mark Hewitson topped the podium with a plaice measuring 45cm.

The event raised £300 for the club's chosen charity, Heroes on the Water.
