WAYNE Shaw will be calling on some of his old Saints buddies to help him make a success of his new role at AFC Totton.

The famous pie-eating 'Roly-Poly Goalie' has been appointed commercial manager of the Southern One South & West club.

“It’s something to get my teeth into,” smiled Shaw, who started out as an aspiring schoolboy centre-half at Southampton.

“We’re going to create a patrons’ lounge in the downstairs boardroom for 50 or 60 people and every other game I’ll ask people like Nicky Banger, Doddsy (Jason Dodd) and Glenn Cockerill to come along as guests.

“I’ve played for the Ex-Saints and have a lot of friends and contacts. Everyone’s willing to help when you’re just starting out.”

As a former Eastleigh goalkeeper, Shaw has seen what can be achieved when a club gets the local business community behind it.

The Spitfires, of course, have moved into a different stratosphere since wealthy owner Stewart Donald took control, but Shaw is convinced Totton have scope to grow at their impressive Testwood Stadium home.

“I’m not saying we can do an Eastleigh but, with no disrespect, the facility at Totton is probably better than what Eastleigh had to begin with. It's just getting more people to use it," he said.

“My job at Totton is commission-based, they’ve got no money as such to pay me a salary, but I’m just trying to bring the community together and make AFC Totton a family affair again.”

A larger-than-life character, Shaw was a well-known face in the town long before he hit national and international headlines for his pie-eating antics during Sutton United’s fifth-round FA Cup tie against Arsenal in February.

His friendship with AFC Totton chairman Wayne Mew and vice-chairman Dave Penny goes back years.

Hailing the arrival of the big man at the Testwood Stadium, an AFC Totton statement said: "We believe having Wayne on board will help this wonderful football club take a huge step towards realising its undoubted potential.

“Wayne has the bubbly personality and he is a Totton lad.

“So if anybody can make a success of this role then it will be Wayne Shaw.

“We are proud to have him on board.”
