Nearly 450 fish were recorded during the Southern League catch & release open match held at Hill Head.

Darren Cramer (Southampton) stamped his authority on the event, beaching a brace of thorneback rays along with a trio of smaller fish together weighing 16lb 15oz.

Runner-up Darren Newland (Isle of Wight) caught 12lb 11oz.

Species caught during the event which attracted 58 competitors included rays, silver eels, gilthead bream, flounders, sole, scad and tub gurnards.

The night’s heaviest fish was an 11lb 14oz thorneback ray recorded by Cramer while Steve Paulley beached a 10lb 1oz thorneback ray. The pool for the heaviest flatfish was won by Jeffery Fisk (Bournemouth & District SAA) with a 1lb 15oz sole.

The nominated pool for the longest bream was won by Russell Preston (28cm.
