BROCKENHURST owed manager Pat McManus a big performance in the FA Vase on Saturday – and the Badgers duly delivered.

Their 2-1 extra-time home win over Crediton United went a long way to atoning for the 7-0 league shambles at Team Solent the previous week – a display branded “disgraceful” by the boss.

Faced with a Crediton side riding high at the top of the South West Peninsula League Division One East, Brock seized an early lead when Mark Barker met Matt Burt’s diagonal ball and took one touch before rounding the ’keeper.

With 17-year-old Ed Kitcher looking calm and assured in goal, Brock coped well with a team packed with six-footers but suffered a setback when Mitch Speechley-Price was sent off for a second yellow with around 20 minutes to go.

Crediton cashed in with a stoppage-time leveller, but it was the ten men of Brock who triumphed thanks to debut-making Dammy Bada’s coolly-taken winner seven minutes into extra time.

The former Bashley and Blackfield & Langley full-back had trained with Brock but didn’t sign forms until last week due to work commitments.

He made up for lost time, calmly applying the finishing touch after Will Tickle had rampaged forward from the halfway line.

“Crediton are a big, strong, physical side but, against the odds, we got through it,” said McManus.

“It was a good response from us. It was hard work because of the elements and there was no room for the lads to hide – and they didn’t. They got the result they deserved.”

Brock’s win sets up an intriguing all-Wessex Premier tie at Hamble Club in the second round on Saturday, November 11.

Ben Kneller’s Monks emerged 3-2 winners at Division One outfit Romsey Town thanks to Mo Nyang (2) and Ben Kemplen.

McManus and Kneller are good friends and spoke together soon after the draw was made.

“Ben agreed that it’s not a great draw for either of us,” said McManus.

“They’ll fancy it, but if we can go there with a strong 14, it’s a tie we wouldn’t be frightened of.

"I get on really well with Ben. We know each other’s teams quite well.”
