CEDRIC Soares has begged Saints to climb out the “hole” they find themselves in and change their attitude immediately to avoid being dragged into a dogfight at the bottom of the Premier League.

Saints’ players cut forlorn figures as they exited Anfield following a 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, which meant they’ve now won just once in seven league games and sit uncomfortably near the relegation zone.

Many of the players who usually speak after defeats such as these were clearly too troubled to front up on this occasion, turning down press interviews.

But Cedric, who believes Saints gave up at Anfield, spoke passionately above the predicament Mauricio Pellegrino’s side find themselves in.

“We need to be upset. If you are not upset then something is wrong. We need to think about our mistakes and what we need to improve,” he said.

“It’s normal to be upset and upset doesn’t mean you go out there and let your head go down. It means we go out there and you want to show even more and you want to climb out of the hole and come back to winning ways.”

The 26-year-old Euro 2016 winner insists this is no time for Saints to turn on each-other and point fingers over who is to blame for their downturn in fortunes.

In the right-back’s mind, this is a collective responsibility and there needs to be an attitude change.

“Every team has difficult moments during a season and it’s in these moments you need to come together and fight for it,” he said.

“You cannot blame one or two people, you need to blame all the team and we need to assume our responsibility and go out there and fight as one as a team. That’s what we’re going to try and do immediately in the next game.”

He continued: “You cannot start to doubt everything you do just because you had a bad result.

“Either, you can put your head down and just go on the pitch and play or you get together and you fight.

“We need to definitely go out there and fight with all our weapons. It’s a question of attitude, we need to demand the best from our players and not 60 or 70 per cent because in the Premier League it’s not enough.”

Cedric believes Saints gave up at Liverpool.

“We didn’t start badly, but after the first and second goal we gave up a little bit and our reaction was not the best,” he said.

“It’s tough to say, we need to keep working and it’s in the tough moments when all the good players need to show themselves.”

Saints kept Liverpool from scoring in four successive matches last season in all competitions.

So what changed on this occasion as Mo Salah's brace and Phil Coutinho's strike downed Saints?

“We had a different mentality here last season. Last season we came here to defend more, but today we tried to assume a little bit more control of the game and take more risks,” he said.

“We had one or two mistakes, we conceded the goals and after that it’s tough to comeback. Our reaction was not the best.

“May be we need to consider our reaction and work on that. We need to make sure we never give up because there’s always a chance to come back. We need to improve that.”
