WITH just 24 games played, AFC Totton have already amassed more points than in the whole of 2016/17.

Yesterday’s 2-0 win at Slimbridge means they have hit the 40 mark, eclipsing the 39 they finished with last term.

Rather than fighting to stay up this year, the eighth-placed Stags sit on the fringes of the Evo-Stik South West play-offs in Louis Langdown's first full season in charge.

A run of four games without a win ensured they no longer boast the best defensive record in the league.

But Totton rediscovered their mean streak with a clean sheet at Slimbridge where second-half goals from Charlie Gunson and Tony Lee fired them back to winning ways against the ten-man Swans.

Two yellow cards in seven minutes saw home skipper Alex Hoyle sent off on the hour mark and Totton quickly made the man advantage tell.

Having had a goal disallowed on 67 minutes, they edged ahead on 75 when sub Alfy Whittingham nodded the ball through for Charlie Gunson to score.

Slimbridge pushed forward in search of an equaliser and were caught in the dying moments when good work by Jack Masterton and Craig Feeney allowed Tony Lee to plant an angled shot into the corner from 12 yards.

“It was a funny game,” said Langdown. “We had a few things go against us and it felt like one of those days.

“Curtis (Young) got through one-on-one with the keeper and the ref pulled it back for a foul and then we scored through Feens and the ref gave the goal. But then one of their players asked the ref about it, he talked to the linesman and it was given offside.

“Murphs (goalkeeper Shane Murphy) had made an excellent save from a point-blank header in the first half to keep us in it and their goalkeeper played well too and it looked like we weren’t going to get the goal we needed.

“But we changed things a bit and Alfy comes on and, with his first touch, heads it through for Charlie to finish.

“Two minutes before Tony Lee made it 2-0, I’d had a go at him for giving the ball away twice in succession!

“But a win and a clean sheet made it a perfect day for us.”

Langdown, who takes his side to Fleet Town for a Russell Cotes Cup quarter-final on Tuesday (7.45pm), places no real importance on overtaking last season’s points total.

“Last year had its purpose to stay in the league, but it has no real relevance to this season,” he said.

“The points tally’s not something I’ve looked at, we’ll just take things as we can and see how many we can get in a full season.

"We might just get enough to stay another year in this league,” he smiled.
