SAINTS defender Jan Bednarek put the frighteners on Japan and St Mary's colleague Maya Yoshida at the World Cup this afternoon in Poland's 1-0 win in Group H.

In his sixth appearance for Poland, Bednarek scored his first international goal, volleying home from close range on 59 minutes to score what would be the winning goal in the group stage finale.

It meant the Poles, who were already out the tournament in Russia, made it very uncomfortable for Yoshida and Japan, who needed just a point to guarantee qualification to the knockout stages.

As it was, Colombia defeated Senegal 1-0 in the other Group H game, putting themselves through to the last 16 as group winners and meaning Japan went through on the fair play ruling, because of their better disciplinary record.

Yoshida could now face England in the last 16, if the Three Lions finish as Group G winners.
