COLIN Munro’s maiden Hampshire fifty fired the county to their first Vitality Blast win of the season at The Ageas Bowl last night.

Overseas star Munro plundered 63 from 40 balls before taking two for 20 with his medium-pacers to secure Hampshire their first win, by 21 runs, after beginning with three defeats.

James Fuller had recorded a spectacular 6-28, the Vitality Blast’s best figures, as Hampshire reached 184, having been 128-2 midway through the 13th over.

After winning the toss James Vince smashed Steven Finn for three boundaries.

But the former England fast bowler had his revenge in his second over, when Vince picked out Fuller on the boundary.

Sam Northeast followed in the powerplay, swinging to deep midwicket, but the hosts still reached 62 after six overs - thanks mainly to Munro.

The New Zealander struggled to get going in his opening three Blast innings but a trio of sixes took him to a 26-ball half-century.

Munro and Rilee Rossouw timed the ball exquisitely in a 72-run stand before the latter was caught on the upper-cut for a sprightly 32, sparking Hampshire’s loss of seven wickets for 56 runs in 43 balls.

Fuller was at the heart of the collapse. Tom Alsop chopped on first ball and Munro was the third wicket to fall in four balls when a sliding Holden held on at deep square leg.

Liam Dawson slogged Dwayne Bravo to deep mid-wicket and Fuller had his maiden T20 five-for when Gareth Berg tickled behind.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman became Hampshire’s third golden duck victim as the home side were all out with two balls to spare.

But Chris Wood bowled Middlesex dangerman Paul Stirling at the end of the first over.

In-form Max Holden got his side back on track with a quickfire 36 – before two wickets stunted the visitors in the sixth over.

Dawid Malan departed attempting to reverse sweep Mujeeb and three balls later Holden was run out by the Afghan.

Eoin Morgan, on his 250th Twenty20 appearance, dragged a cut against Munro to Rossouw, who made up good ground to complete the catch.

After a 40-run stand for the fifth wicket with Dwayne Bravo, John Simpson skied to James Vince at cover, before Ashton Agar was run out while backing-up.

Bravo unleashed three maximums in his 38 to give Middlesex hope, before skying a return catch as Middlesex limped to 163-9.

Hampshire all-rounder Colin Munro said: “We haven’t done anything as a top order but tonight I finally contributed, although it was frustrating to get out when I did. As a team we left 15 or 20 runs out there.

“Things haven’t gone our way so far but we stuck with it and we got what we deserved.

“We haven’t played badly and tonight showed we had something in the tank – there is a lot of positive stuff to take forward.”

Essex host Hampshire at Chelmsford today but also have only one win so far after their match against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham was abandoned last night.
