AFC STONEHAM are determined to make their debut FA Cup season a memorable one.

The Purples pulled off a stunning midweek result, beating AFC Portchester 3-0 on their own patch to book a home tie with Westfield in the preliminary round on Saturday, August 25.

Having been held 0-0 at The HP Arena on Saturday, Stoneham faced an uphill task to win the replay away from home against a Royals side who ply their trade one division above them in the Sydenhams Premier.

But the Division One underdogs failed to read the script, storming through with goals from Sergio Caballero, Alex Welch and Matt Palmer.

The early part of the game was similar to the first game with Ben Clarke and Palmer having to win many aerial challenges for AFC Stoneham .

But then The Purples started to enjoy extra space, allowing them to ignite their free-flowing passing game and create numerous chances .

Caballero converted the first goal from a fortunate Jack Brady header on 44 minutes .

That lead was extended when Will Harris and Brady combined well to set up Welch on 57 minutes.

Tom Hogan then put his shot over the bar in a one-on-one, but Stoneham only had to wait another five minutes before Palmer struck from close-range to crown a famous victory.

Purples chairman Mark Stupple said: " Although this is a fantastic and historic night for our whole club, full credit must go to Tim (Cole, manager), James (Phillips, assistant) and the players who were outstanding for 90 minutes.

"To come to one of the bigger Wessex Premier teams and perform as we did was awesome and no one can deny that we deserved the victory .

"Although we are enjoying our own little FA Cup journey and creating history we must now quickly come back down to earth and prepare for our very important league game at Alton Town on Saturday."

"Full credit to AFC Portchester who, despite being hurt ,were gracious and magnanimous in defeat. We wish them every success this season. "

The Purples' next opponents Westfield, from Woking, play in the Bostik South Central, two levels above their hosts .

Tuesday's other replays also went in favour of the away sides.

Brockenhurst had James Thomson and Matt Sheedy goals to thank for their 2-0 success at Christchurch, while Nathan Lynch and John Cole fired Hamble Club through 2-0 at Alresford Town.

Brock must now travel to Binfield on Saturday week (August 25), while Ben Kneller’s Hamble will visit Steve Claridge’s Salisbury.

With Hamble’s generous agreement, all the gate receipts from Tuesday will go to Alresford striker Conor Whiteley who was badly injured in Saturday’s 1-1 draw between the sides.

Two former Blackfield & Langley players, Sam Griffin and Franklyn Clarke, proved Salisbury’s undoing in their 2-1 home defeat by Poole Town in the Evo-Stik Premier South.

Poole, who have appointed ex-Wimborne and Gosport Borough boss Alex Pike as their new commercial manager, were already leading when Salisbury had Kane O’Keefe red-carded on the half-hour.

Clarke doubled the Dolphins’ advantage on the stroke of half-time with Dan Fitchett bagging Salisbury’s 76th-minute consolation.

Craig McAllister’s Gosport Borough fell to a 1-0 defeat at Hartley Wintney where Liam Eagle bagged the 40th-minute decider.

Highlight of the Sydenhams Division One programme was Romsey Town’s 6-1 romp at Fawley AFC.

Ben Bolton’s joy at firing Fawley into a first-half lead began to fade when Pearce Farren pulled Romsey level in time added on following an injury to Town keeper Jordan Westbrook.

The roof then caved in for the Oilers after the break as Joao Aldeano, Harry Draycott (2), Craig Bryant and James Clifton swept the Bypass Boys to victory on the Waterside.

Fawley tweeted: “Very poor from us in the second half and a very rampant Romsey punished us. No excuses from us, good luck to Romsey on their title push.”
