Burley: There's nowhere to hide

6:57am Friday 23rd November 2007

THIS is St Mary's - the stadium where there will be nowhere to hide for Saints' under-pressure players tomorrow.

Boss George Burley sends his men into action against lowly Blackpool for the first time since the 5-0 thrashing at Sheffield Wednesday a fortnight ago.

And the manager is in bullish mood ahead of the game. "Everybody's got to brave," he said. "It's no good not facing up to the challenge.

"The easiest thing is to put your head down and blame things, but you've got to get your chin out and face it head on. You've got to roll your sleeves up and come out fighting.

"It's going to be a pressure time coming up."

He added: "Of course there is going to be frustration and there is going to be criticism.

"That is football, but the main thing is everybody battling and pulling in the same direction."

2 Weeks is a long time and were back to basics tommorow. What a Great week it could end up being if Burley was to get his marching orders like McClaren. Saints are like England at the moment No Direction / No Pride / No Passion and Burley like McClaren simply NO IDEA!
Can the SAINTS BOARD, if there is one finally do the the right thing and get rid of Burley before its too late.

Well done Mike - great comparison with England. As if Jose, O'Neill and Capello would run to take our job, and as if we can pay whatever we need to pay to get the right man.

Do you want Burley fired before or after the game? We are playing a football match at home tomorrow, right? Muppet

Seriously, why do all of Saints problems come down to Burley all the time. To me all it shows is a lack of football nous from our clubs "supporters". Fair enough, we are all entitled to our opinions and are all entitled to express them, however, at a time like this, we all need to unite. I know I sound like I have been brainwashed by media spin, but I can assure you I haven't. I have seen the Saints play like a pub team for most of the time since the initial takeover statement last season. Coincidence? Hardly. The only people in the club who know what is going on and the true direction the club is heading are the Board. I am not being hypocritical by blaming just one section of the club, as all are ultimately responsible for the current state of our club, from the board room down to the playing staff and the coaching staff, right the way down the club. What I am saying, however, is that with as much uncertainty as there currently is at SFC, is it any wonder things are not going as per expectations. Players are only human. They are effected if their employment is thrown into doubt, if 18,000 people are on their backs week in week out, if they are kept in the dark about important issues. Yours and mine proffesional performances would suffer under alot less pressure than that. What we should be doing is showing those who turn out every week on the pitch, those who turn out everyday to train, that we are behind them and stop baying for blood. We are Southampton Football Club supporters, so lets support Southampton Football Club. Also, an obseveration. Two years ago, when George Burley took over as manager of our club, when we were being torn to pieces every week, when the standard of football was worse than most sunday morning sides serve up, when the squad was being ripped to shreds, we were all behind him. He was the right man for the job, everybody was happy to see him here and was full of support for him. We can all see the difficulties of managing SFC yet we seem to be fickle or suffer with selective amnesia which comes and goes to suit us. Just a thought.

Burley is right though. There is nowhere to hide. Nowhere for him, the players, the coaches, and of course the supporters. We are in this together.

Is it too much to ask that Saturday's Saints team goes out and plays with passion and purpose?

I can forgive individual errors by players, but I'm sick of players passing the buck and looking like rabbits in the headlights.

Get stuck in, never give up and show some bottle.

This is your last chance Burley and players.

The squad should be good enough to get out of this devision, we could put out a team of internationals (if you include juniors). But the squad is clearly not big or good enough to chop and change personel and formations and tactics. Sucess comes from establishing a style of play that all the players understand and can slot into when called upon. Watford are an example (though I would hate us to adopt that style). There is also clearly very bad leadership from the board, to announce , before a big game, that players will be culled, for financial reasons is irresponsible. The only good reason for changing the manager is to perk things up, otherwise Burley is about as good as we can expect.

If you are going to quote me, please do me the courtesy of using the full quote. My point was that George was the right man then when the going was one hell of alot worse, so how can he be the wrong man if there is an improvement? Remember, at that point we coudn't score in a brothel with a hand full of diamonds. There was no sign of a win anywhere. At least now we can score goals, ok so we have difficulties in defence, but we also look like we can win games. The division is that tight, we are still within touching distance of the playoffs. And who's to say Watford won't do a Cardiff and we won't do a Sunderland. This is football. Anything can happen. JUST SUPPORT THE CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let 'em have it Saint4Life!

Let's try and get behind the team. If Burley goes I am seriously worried about who we would get lumbered with.

Does our numpty board releasing detrimental statements a) help morale and the teams performance or b) detract from what they are doing.

We've got a better squad now than last year (except we need a LB and a GK). If anything our outfield squad is too big, leaving GB with the temptation to rotate and give everyone a go.

I'm preying for 3 points on Saturday, don't care if it is a dirty one nil job scored off Rasiaks backside (a typical Rasiak finish) in the 89th minute, we just need to stop the rot!

The global economy is in turmoil at the moment (ok maybe not so much in the east) but certainly in the UK / US. The credit crunch and America slipping into recession is hitting most business sectors. Whose to say that Ray and his cronies, or any other outside investors for that matter, aren't waiting for it to bottom out before putting a bid in?

I think that you're being a tad too touchy - I don't disagree with your point about GB being the right man two years ago....

However, I don't think that he is the right man now. Too many cliches used over and over again in interviews, no explanations for frankly bizarre team selections, and no apologies for appalling performances.

If you're in the position where you think progress is losing 5-0 to Sheff Weds, then sorry but you've got rose tinted glasses on.

If GB spent less time this summer whinging about selling our 'three best players' and instead got the defence and team playing as a settled unit, we wouldn't be having this argument now.

I wonder how his comment about his 'three best players' affected morale as well?

I'm not going to get into the 'I'm a better fan than you are' rubbish, but for the argument, I've been watching Saints since I was five, I'm a shareholder, and entitled to my opinion.

And you're entitled to yours - I'll be cheering them on tomorrow during the game, but will assess the performance, GB and all, afterwards and not before.

I am not doubting your credentials as a Saints fan. That is not my place. The fact that you post on here confirms your passion and alleigence. And I agree we have had some really poor performances this year. Also, for the record my rose tinted glasses broke the day Matty retired. All I am getting at is that the term "support" means just that. And this is part of my way of supporting as well as attending all home and as many away matches as my salary will support. I respect and value most peoples opinions, yours included, on here, and would in no way wish to censor any genuine fan. What I will say, however, having opinions is essential. But the delivery of opinions is even more so. Does cheering the team on stop when we leave St Marys. Could it be that players read these pages and get knocked by our negativity? We are all responsible.

Spinmeister, I thankyou for providing an interesting debate, and I say that without any hint of sarcasm. I raise my pint to you. At leats I will when I finish work tonight.

Point 2, on another tack, there's a lot being said that clubs are blaming "foreign players" for England's recent poor performance. Seems they're keeping out English talent. Perhaps they think we don't realise it's the clubs who are buying the services of these same "foreign players". . .

I'm with you Wazza and Saints4Life. I hate to see all the negativity posted on here and the anti-Burley brigade having a go at every opportunity. We have had a lot of bad luck this season with injuries, turmoil in the boardroom and selling of our best players. I still think George is the right man for the job given time to sort out the mess he has through no fault of his own found himself in. When Lawrie MacMenemy took over from Ted Bates he took us straight down to Division 2 and it took 3 years to rebuild and for us to go up. So cut George some slack and support him and the team in these troubled times. For those who want a quick fix solution, get real. We just haven't got the money. Saints might do a Sunderland and Watford might do a Cardiff!!! Have you been on the hard stuff early. There is more chance of Burley getting the England job. I'm all for getting behind the team but lets look at the facts:

1. We've been stuffed by 3 teams who are in the bottom half the table, and 2 of those teams have sacked their manager.

2. We lost to Norwich who languish at the bottom of the table.

3. Twice we've played 10 men at home and lost!

4 We've let in more goals than any team in the league.

5. Sheffield Wednesday had the worse home record in the division and yet beat us 5-0!

I think even the most loyal fan has a right to be upset. Burley has to carry the can for some of this. That said I will be cheering Saints on Saturday hoping for change in fortune.

Lowe opposes Southampton takeover

Former Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe
Former chairman Lowe remains one of the club's major shareholders
Former Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe will not support the proposed takeover of the club by hedge fund Sisu Capital.

The proposed deal, revealed in October, would see Sisu take a majority stake in the Championship club's parent company, Southampton Leisure Holdings plc.

Lowe said he had made suggestions to Sisu about the structure of the deal.

But he told BBC Radio Solent: "They are adamant that they will not change their outline, so for now they will not receive our support."

Sisu's proposed offer would be executed by means of a placing of new shares at 40p per share - 20% below its current share price - but it needs the backing of 75% of shareholders.

Lowe stood down as chairman in June 2006, but remains a major shareholder in the club.

He has met with Michael Wilde and Leon Crouch, who are also former chairmen of the football club and major shareholders in Southampton Leisure Holdings, to discuss their position.

The trio are yet to meet representatives of London-based Sisu, but Lowe said there was "no point in meeting" at this stage.

The proposal is unlikely to attract the necessary 75% backing if Lowe, Wilde and Crouch do not support it.

A club spokesman said they had procured an offer of investment, and it was up to the shareholders whether they wanted to accept that offer, while Sisu declined to comment.

Lowe, Wilde and Crouch announced in late October that they would not back the deal as it stood, and were seeking answers to 10 questions about Sisu's proposals.

At the beginning of November, the club issued a statement warning that players would have to be sold in January "in the absence of significant new investment"

I saw this too - I think the whole fiasco was a non-starter as soon as it was released.

I agree with Saint4life and others of similar mindset - we have to unite behind the team and "support" them even though they are not where we (and they) would like them to be.

I used to watch Reading a lot a few years ago and they see the fans as the 13th player (even so much as to say "Reading fans everywhere" as player number 13 when reading out the team sheet before the games) and there is a very close-knit atmosphere at the Mad-Stad. I would like to see that at St Mary's, right now there seems to be so many "supporters" who can't say a good word about the club.

We can beat Blackpool but we as a supporter unit must do our bit.

Come on you Reds!!!

Support the team and you never know our luck might just turn. COYR!
I totally agree. It's all about supporting the team. The players and the manager WILL turn things around. COYS
Lets hope that a vote of no confidence goes through and Hoos is fushed down the Solent with the other TURDS.

Regarding the financial state of Southampton F.C. reportedly losing 1 million pounds a week is it,I ask the question as to how long the Bank is likely to continue supporting the club.
Northern Rock Bank would be closed now if the Government had not stepped in to shore them up but the shares are still dropping like stones.
Who is going to pay an inflated value for Southampton F.C.in its current s--- state.
It's no good the board thinking they can sell players in January. We will be in receivership by then and the Government wont bail us out.

Sorry guys but with supporters like you this club will go nowhere.
Now I am starting to see a lack of passion and ambition in you guys. If you all think Burley is the right man for the job and we have been unlucky then you cant of been to as many games as I have!
The sign of a ''GOOD MANAGER'' is one who is not seen a quote from Steve Coppell a football man and manager who sits quietly and contemplates his tean direction and they are in the Premiership.
Burley stands waving his arms for all to see and the players simply ignore him and if you dont believe me you watch carefully on Saturday.
The man has No MOTIVATION SKILLS / NO MAN MANAGMENT SKILLS / NO IDEA OF WHO IS A GOOD PLAYER / NO IDEA ON PEOPLES POSITION / NO TACTICAL BRAIN / IN SHORT NO IDEA! Someone should give the FA a shoput as perhaps George fits all criteria!
Besides all this COYS

It might almost be a good thing if So'ton lost this Saturday- it would force painful decisions to be made. Dragging this whole saga out will do no one any good.

I was born in So'ton and lived there many years. I am just a realist- drastic action is necessary here and papering over the cracks won't do it.

I strongly agree with mike. Saints for life and Wazza you have no idea. If you think southampton have a chance of doing a sunderland and Burley getting it right and leading us to promotion your on some seious deugs. He has known for 2 years we have had defensive problems, and this year weve let in more goals than the last 2 seasons at this stage of the year. We havent scored a goal in 3 games, no one knows where they will be playing in the team. Who will be up front this week, John, BWP, Rasiak, Saga, Dyer. Burley should know his best team by now.

Success is built on strong foundations within the team and club. Saints are a club in turmoil with no leadership on or off the park!!
