Saints battle for point at Plymouth

Saints couldn't make it three wins in a row for the first time this season but still battled hard for a creditable point at Plymouth.

Bradley Wright-Phillips gave Saints the lead early on but Plymouth pegged them back through Rory Fallon just after half time.

Saints had to defend doggedly at times in the second half as the Home Park crowd roared on the side managed by former St Mary's boss Paul Sturrock but in the end both sides had to settle for a draw.

Plymouth had the first attempt at goal when David Norris lofted the ball into the area and on to the head of Rory Fallon whose header drifted just wide of the post.

Bradley Wright-Phillips had Saints' first chance when Gregory Vignal picked out his run with a raking high ball.

The Saints striker got to the ball ahead of the keeper and just needed to head it over him but didn't get enough on it and it landed it the arms of Luke McCormick.

Peter Halmosi tried his luck from just inside the Saints half on 11 minutes but it was a comfortable catch for Kelvin Davis.

But Wright-Phillips atoned for his earlier miss when he gave Saints the lead on 12 minutes.

Alexander Ostlund played a long ball from the right into Wright-Phillips whose run took him in behind the Plymouth defence. He took the ball in his stride superbly and pushed into the area and when McCormick came out to try and stop him Wright-Phillips delicately lifted it over him and into the far corner for 1-0.

After a lively start the game started to get a little more bogged down in the midfield area.

Vignal decided to have a pop at goal on 25 minutes but from 30 yards slashed his effort high and wide.

Darren Powell was the first man booked for a foul on Norris after he had robbed him of the ball and broken away.

Norris had appeals for a penalty turned down by referee Uriah Rennie and it appeared the correct decision as he ran into Vignal.

Davis had to make his first save on the half hour mark after Steve MacLean held the ball up under pressure from Powell at the near post and rolled it back to Lilian Nalis whose effort was well stopped down to his left by the Saints keeper.

He had to make an even better stop two minutes later after Jason Euell gave the ball away and Norris quickly fired away a shot from 20 yards that Davis had to stop at full stretch again down to his left.

Vignal became the second Saints player in the book when he tripped Norris on 38 minutes.

Wright-Phillips had a chance a minute before the break when the ball dropped in the area. It was a tough chance as he had to watch it drop over his shoulder and he didn't get a clean connection and the ball went wide.

There was an incredible scramble in the Saints area after Fallon lifted the ball over Davis inside the area, Saints got it just away but Halmosi's follow-up header was going in before Euell and Vignal managed to get it off the line.

But despite that scare it was Saints who led at half time.

Wright-Phillips came close again three minutes into the second half after being picked out by another ball over the top.

This time his first touch took him wide on the left but from an acute angle his shot flashed across the keeper but just wide of the far post.

But with their first attack of the half Plymouth equalised.

It was a nice move when on 51 minutes Gary Sawyer played the ball to Halmosi who had run inside of Ostlund on the left. Halmosi cut the ball back to Fallon whose low first time side footed effort beat Davis and made it 1-1.

Halmosi had a try himself with a 25 yard free kick which he got on target with his left foot but it was straight at Davis.

Plymouth had another good chance on 57 minutes but Halmosi volleyed over the bar.

Saints made their first change a minute later with Inigo Idiakez replacing Hammill. Idiakez went into the centre of midfield with Euell moving to the right and Andrew Surman to the left.

Andrew Davies was booked for dissent just after the hour mark. Rasiak followed four minutes later for a dive.

Plymouth made their first substitution on 68 minutes with former Saint Yoann Folly coming on for Luke Summerfield.

Plymouth twice came close to taking the lead on 73 minutes.

First Halomosi cut in from the right and his left footed shot from the edge of the area was turned onto the post by Davis. Then Fallon mishit the rebound but it still required Davis to get back across the other side of his goal to dive to his right to turn it round the post.

Burley made a second switch on 77 minutes with Wayne Thomas replacing Ostlund.

Saints were hanging on somewhat and Fallon had another chance but another poor connection made it easy for Davis.

Burley made his final switch with nine minutes remaining with Stern John on for Rasiak.

With four minutes left Wright-Phillips made McCormick stretch with a shot from 20 yards that the Plymouth keeper just about got his hand to and kept out while John was offside for the rebound.

Saints were coming on strong in the closing stages having seen off the worst of Plymouth's efforts but after so long playing on what was a heavy pitch both sides were struggling for the extra yard in and around the final third.

The fourth official held up the board to show three minutes of stoppage time with both side knowing a goal would win it.

Jermaine Wright had an effort from 25 yards after things opened up in front of him but he dragged it wide of the target.

That proved to be the last chance of the game and it ended 1-1 and a point for both teams.

We were lucky to get the point. Davis was very good thank goodness. What is the point in Euell and why is Rasiak allowed to stroll around? We had no drive or determination. I've heard a lot in these forums about our defence but that looked okay. Our midfield is non existant. If we played for the whole game as we did in the last five minutes we would have won well.

We need more effort and some good attacking footbal. Very negative today.....Plymouth deserved all the points. Well done Davies and Powell.

Rasiak completely useless, I don't hink Poland will want him representing their country if the way he played today was anything to go by, but towards the end of the game subs Thomas and John made a huge difference, should have played them from the start - yet another well thought out team selection George!

This fixture is the only one I guarantee seeing and we have been shocking here for the last three years. It was not a good away point it was a rubbish game and an uncommited and negative display from some so called proffessionals called Euell, Wright and Rasiak. Stern John and Thomas made a positive impact but what is the point in making a change with less than ten minutes to go. Any sub worth making needs half an hour. Rasiak was rubbish in the first half and should have been given no more than 15 minutes to prove he could pick it up.

All we had today was a battling defence and a quality keeper. BWP puts in the effort though and it was a quality finish. I was in the Argyle Stand and had a good side on view. He was very cool chipping the keeper when clean through.

Not a good away point. If we played the whole game as we did in the last five minutes we would have won well.

Redkrapp won't be around for ever. Anyway P*mpey will end up like us, punching above your weight for a while before taking a nosedive. You'll get to Europe one season then relegated the next - it's happened to lots of teams including us.

Anyway, forgetting the skates (which we'd all like to do) today was pretty bad and in the end Saints fans are relieved to come away with a point. Terrible.

First 30 minutes today we looked a class above Plymouth then we started to hoof it like them, Why?,
No player seemed to be able to change the pattern and with quite a few experienced pros in the side that was worrying.
Perhaps the coaching vid on you tube explains a few things.
As we now have meaningless fixtures for the rest of the season then chuck in a youngster from the Academy, there must be someone who can pass the ball to feet unlike the players in the second half today which was pretty dire,

We weren't a class above Plymouth until the last five minutes. But what Mr Thorshammer says about trying youth is bang on. I really don't think we will get relegated from this league but the playoffs are so unlikely. If we were playing some of our youngsters like Lancashire, McGoldrick and Lallana I would feel we were achieving something and they would benefit from it this year and will will in the future. I cannot believe that Dutton-Black could be worse than what I saw from Hammill today and at least one of our own will be getting first team experience. Powell did make it through today John and he was good and strong alongside Davies.

1. Kelvin Davis was, quite frankly, superb. Well done Kelvin, I haven't seen such an assured goalkeeping display for a long time (I do see games, I just haven't been able to go to St Mary's for a long time due to personal reasons).

2. Rasiak was very poor. He has a good away goal scoring record but from this display I fail to understand why. BWP and SJ looked a much better partnership.

3. Jason Euell put in one of the worst performances I have ever seen from a professional footballer.

4. Our defence was excellent overall, especially Darren Powell and our recent signing from Middlesbrough.

5. A very low key performance from our midfield. If they operated better, we could have setup several more chances for BWP.

6. Plymouth could easily have won, but Saints looked the better quality team.

7. It's not often that you see an away team dominate the closing stages of a game so much. This gives me hope that we are not as bad as the league table suggests.

Ed.

The fact that Plymouth had 11 shots on target and we only had 4, suggests 3 things to me. Davis actually had a really good game and saved us from defeat, plymouth were the better team and we were really lucky to come away with a point. Everyone keeps saying burley is not to blame and what benefit would we get in changing yet another manager. I say look at Crystal palace. Even sturrock has been doing a fantastic job.

Reality, Terrafirma says...
11:00am Sun 20 Jan 08

Amongst the banter and some down right ignorance there is perhaps a thread of reality. We should not be surprised or disapointed with a draw at Plymouth. The reality is that we have a squad of players, including several journeymen and "sick notes", who were assembled to get us promoted last season. We failed, despite a noble effort, to achieve that and now these players are being found out. I have just watched The Championship on TV and this highlights the difference between ourselves and say Crystal Palace. Energy, high tempo, work and team ethic, and organisation, plus a manager who does not take any nonesense. I feel that the board of SFC are now realistically planning for next season. The addition of two new younger players, Davies and the lad from Villa, plus the evolvement of Drew Surman, BWP and Hamill's roles in the team sugest to me that we have already (and rightly I believe) started building for next season. If we tacked onto the bottom of the top six that would be a bonus for this season. We all know that we wasted our money on about four or five "journeymen" and the result is mid table comfort zone mentality. I call on George Burley to make a decision regarding his immediate future, and for the board to decide who they want to manage/coach us back into the premiership. It will not happen this year folks, but we do need urgent action now to ensure that we do not slumber into another season making all the pathetic excuses for under achievment. This is not a personal criticism of an indiviual manager or player, just an honest appeal for things to be sorted. We do not have a divine right to return to the premiership, we can only get there by hard work, talent, and a collective team effort - from everyone from the board, management, players and most important our great supportes. Saints forever.

Have never heard of 'pallace', presumably you mean 'palace', the crystal type!
I guess that Mr Warnock may fancy a job on the English Riviera, but the top jobs are already filled my Redknapp, Adams and Jordan. Could always have a job on the scouting team I suppose as, unlike our neighbours who, a couple of months back, were talking of the possibility of going into administration and having to sell their 'Talent?' in the transfer window, Pompey have money to spend to improve their team.
From the days of Ted Drake and Alf Ramsey until recent times, with Theo Walcott and Crainey, the Stains have been a 'nursery' club for others, with talent allowed to leave, usually at a knock-down price, and the cash received has evaporated into thin air.
Strange as it may seem, I share your frustration as I believe in 'Competition not Confrontation'.

Can't control a ball, can't shoot, can't head, can't pass 5 yards, the list goes on.

Ed.

Re: Jason Fool, I just couldn't believe what I saw. Numerous mislaid passes, and a terrible end product when he had a sniff of goal. He also wore orange boots which you can only get away with if you are a top player IMO.

maybe we can replace him with someone from the premier league who can pass and cross the ball properly and not careless control of play, he lacks possesion and also the players were
swiched out there positions again yesterday,

its time for a change

k,davis, powell and davies outstanding at plymouth.but midfield and strikers very poor.thomas in a good position in the last minutes put cross behind goal gb etc clapped would alex ferguson i do not think so.norris looks a good player and fallon would be a good player for john or bwp.if burley goes i think ince, hoddle or johnson from bristol city would be good options.skacel must be put in at left midfield and given a run with the new lad from villa behind him.

I've been to around half the home games this season and see a familiar pattern in all the teams we've played against. They all have bloody big blokes at the back, good example was Danny Shittu of Watford. The midfield have players that can both hold onto and run with the ball. Up front, generally poor, which has been our only saving grace.

Burley's had 2 years now to get to grips with this league. Obviously he's going with the model he used at Ipswich with cultured players and or impish players like Magilton, Stewart, Clapham etc. That was 8 years ago and this division has moved backwards. We don't need an Idiakez, Skacel or Rasiak. We need more players like Stern John and those in the Watford team. Big, fit, strong players, not weeds like Surman, Euell and Wright. no wonder teams play through us.

Anyway, I give Burley until the end of the season. If we're no higher than 8th it will be time for a change and he'll be out of contract then anyway so we won't have to pay him off.

Spot on mate ! Its a joke that they can't fill the ground. 19,000 for a premier league match is laughable and if it continues at this rate than hopefully bankruptcy is just around the corner. Keep spending the big money Redcr*p cos the sooner Fartton Park sinks. MOTD had the right idea by relegating this tosh to the last match as nobody could be bothered to watch it.
Loyal supporters? Plural! Did it take more than one person to sumit that? Perhaps you could remind me, how many 'supporters' did you cram in at The Dell? How long did your survive in the Premiership when at that location? When you moved to the St Mary's gasworks ground, how long did you last in the Premiership? Where is all the investment that your new board promised when they ousted Rupert? Whose board of directors, a couple of months back, issued the warning that administration was a possibility, and that players may have to be sold during the transfer window? I think that's enough on that subject. Re MOTD. When you go out for a meal (not a geordie 'Big Mac'), it is generally agreed that you leave the best until last ie the Sweet! I trust that you enjoyed MOTD, the only way you get Premiership football in your area! GET WELL SOON!
1 No.
2 31,000 v Man Utd old 1st Division.
3 12 Years.
4 4 Years.
5 Nowhere.
6 It never happened.

Please give me my score.

P.S. It is known as the Premier League, you should know that, but then in your deluded world you could be in any league exceptthe Champions League.

Well you certainly did not score 6 out of 6 !
The fact is the old DELL had a capacity of 32000+ when standing was allowed and reduced to 15000+ when becoming an all seater.

You asked how many we crammed in the old dell, which was duly answered - you didn't ask what the capacity was - pre or post law changes on standing at football grounds!!
