Hoddle leads names in frame to replace George

GLENN Hoddle is the main name mentioned today in the national press as speculation starts as to who the next Saints boss will be if George Burley takes over at Scotland.

Hoddle has been out of work since leaving Wolves in the summer of 2006.

The ex-Dell manager had lost only 15 out of 76 league and cup games while in charge of the Black Country outfit, but had drawn a whopping 34 since his appointment in December 2004.

Hoddle left Wolves after they had finished seventh in the Championship in 2005/06 - one place outside the play-offs, but eight points adrift of sixth-placed Crystal Palace.

Hoddle's long-time No 2 John Gorman is already at St Mary's - he was brought in by Burley as chief scout last summer following Simon Hunt's departure to West Brom.

Former Saints chairman Rupert Lowe was keen to bring Hoddle back to the club following Gordon Strachan's departure almost four years ago.

But a section of the fanbase was highly critical of the move, and Paul Sturrock was brought in instead.

Hoddle had left the Dell in March 2001 to take over at his 'spiritual home' at Tottenham, but was sacked in September 2003 - ironically after Saints, helped by a James Beattie double, had won 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

Other names put in the frame today include ex-Saint Micky Adams and former Derby boss Billy Davies.

Crouch, please get this right, and please do not go for the knee jerk reaction of the "experienced" Hoddle or Souness. It would be all too easy to not engage the brain and say 'Hoddle / Souness great international players, had experience managing, job done.'

Analyse it this way -

Where have have they enjoyed sucess?

How long have they been out of work for?

What do the Newcastle and Wolves fans think of Souness and Hoddle, respectively?

A bit of inspiration please Mr Crouch, save our club, get some passion back here.

For what it's worth, my hit list is -
1st) Coleman
2nd) Ince
3rd) Blackwell
4th - tier) Shearer or Martin Allen or Dowie (if we could prize away, doubt it) or Dave Jones)

No-no's) Davies / Hoddle / Souness / Doddy.

I will look with interest for the rest of the day(s) to see everyone else’s opinion, after all it is opinion and there will definitely be others on here who will argue FOR Hoddle / Souness until they’re blue in the face. I just hope -

a) in 1-2 years we can look back at this and say, whoever Crouch gets in, be it my 1st choice or 'no-no' or someone I haven't even considered, the right choice was made

b) it is someone who the fans can unite behind immediately and not someone that will have to win us over

Please get this appointment right or I'll give it another 25 months before we're hunting for a manager.

I know it's cloud cuckoo land but wouldn't it be great to see Channon temped away from his 'orses.

He always speaks passionatley about Saints and is old school. If some over paid 'idiot' (that is def not a Channon term!) didn't pull his weight then at least we'd know (as Saints fans) that they'd be getting an ear full.

Let's be realistic... What will prob happen is that the manager brought in will be on less salary than most of the players. They will have no respect and just pick up their pay (as do most pro players nowadays).

Channon - your time is now!!! Come in and sort the lazy sew-n-sews out! Let's see some passion back into SFC - ditch all the foreigners and get some kids in. At least they would care.

All we want as Saints fans is players who play for the shirt. I'm sick of seeing players going through the motions...

Chuck in Tiss & (perhaps) Benali and off we go - SFC would buzzing again.

I'll stop dreaming. Anyone but Hoddle though - that would be such a step backwards.

Nick Holmes would at least get most peoples support and let's face it - he couldn't do any worse...

One things is for certain, having spent all season wanting Burley out, we will not now be able to agree on who is his best replacement. Shearer is the Keegan appointment, the one nobody seriously believes will happen, but would unite the fans. Ince has a great track record for a new manager and might fancy a crack at a higher league. Johnson similarly, but why would he leave Bristol for a club with no guaranteed investment power? Davies would be unpopular with the fans. Coleman would be a great signing if he would consider it. If not it looks like Hoddle to me as at least we know what we are getting and I believe he has the ability to learn from his mistakes.

I'm glad that GB will get the Scottish job (however being a Scot, one headache goes and another comes along but I will have to deal with that later) - he has taken Saints as far as he can under the circumstances.
Appointing Hoddle is a backward step for me - we need a young manager with fresh ideas who can turn the squad and the whole club around on a shoestring budget!
For me - Coleman, John Collins, Paul Ince (if we can get him?) or Blackwell.
Let's use this chance to breathe fresh life into our club!

Coleman - Kept Fulham in the prem with not too much money season-in-season-out
, he leaves and look at em now

Ince - Seems to have the golden touch with whoever he manages

Blackwell - Got Leeds to the play offs with limited funds, playing good football

The club can't afford to make another backward step. We need a manager with some drive and passion to ignite the fans. Hoddle is good technically, but too many fans still dislike him and I feel some will just be waiting for the first run of bad form to get on his back. Why take the risk of that when there are just as good managers available who all fans will back and give time to?

Sniper, don't you think this will happen whoever the manager is. Some people want instant success and think there is an easy fix, there isn't. Whoever comes in needs the backing of all the fans for the long term, I don't want Davies but if he comes in I'll give him and the team all my support as useul.

Jamie, London says...
9:41am Wed 23 Jan 08

Ince - would be my preferred candidate, but why would he come? He can finish the job at Milton Keynes and then walk into a premiership/top championship job. Billy Davies - dear god, no! Shearer - pie in the sky. Tiss - doesn't want to manage, does he. plus no experience &c. Blackwell - a bit ofa an unambitious choice, but might do OK, I suppose. Dave Jones - wouldn't come, and I wouldn't want him. Did OK for us but bought a lot of bad players. Souness - I think he'd make a good director of football somewhere, as he has a good eye for a player, and he is a "winner", but his substitutions and team selections were crazier than George's - Lundekvam as midfielder anyone?

So, we're in a hole, we're not an attractive proposition, but we have the opportunity to get someone of Hoddle's experience and quality and we don't want him 'cos he walked out on us once? It's so childish, really.

Why not? Er, tried to sell Beattie to Palace for £1m (max) but Beatts said no. Put Pahars on the wing. Walked out on us without even saying good bye to players. Went to Spurts when he universal backing / hero status. Spent £5m on Buncevic or whatever his name was and £8m on Postiga. Lost more games than even Spurts had done previously. Alieniated fans. We've always prided ourselves in being a footballing club and Davies' ugly little face just doesn't fit. Better get someone raw like Shearer (look what Roy Keane did at Sunderland) than go down that route. This also applies to Allardyce, Adams, Sanchez, Simpson et al. Otherwise, Coleman might be worth a punt, so would Ince, but i f we're looking for someone with flair and ability, let's try to use some of the Burley compensation and poach Johnson from Bristol City or Calderwood from Forest. And pleaase don't let anyone mention Wise and Bassett.....

I think we have to be realistic. Apart from Davies and Hoddle who would want to come to saints? We are now not regarded as a premiership club in the championship and have become a middle of the table type club. we have no money either so wages are going to be an issue. I dont want Davies because he has proved he cant cut it in the prem if we did go up and Souness would be a disaster. Shearer is going to Newcastle so he is out. Ince I am sure would also not be any good at saints. Yes he is doing well at the moment but that is in the lower leagues. Coleman, we couldnt afford his wages (he is my first choice). Hoddle. not sure how I feel on this one. He might be ok, but then his recent track record has not been that great and he has been out of touch with football for a while. However, if he came back I wouldnt be disappointed. I know the board have to get it right, but we are severly restriced on who would want to come to saints. I am glad GB is going, I just hope he does. I also hope that we can trust in the board to get a decent replacement in!

Just a reminder of the managerial successes over the past few decades.
In 1973 McMenemy took over from the late, great Ted Bates.
Then came Chris Nichol,(who was sacked then reinstated for trying to 'knock some sense' into one of the team). Ian Branfoot, fresh from success at Reading. Alan Ball, doing the work with McMenemy taking the credit as Director of Football. Dave Merrington, who was not given the time to succeed with the club that he had given so much to, and still will not say a bad word against. He was elbowed to make room for Souness, whose greatest success was to introduce the fans to the skills of one Ali Dia. He was followed by Dave Jones who, if I remember correctly, joined from success at Stockport County. At a time when he needed the support of his board of directors and fans, having been accused of crimes he had not committed, was promised wholehearted support, put on 'paid leave' and replaced. In came Hoddle, the current favourite to replace Burley. His idea of loyalty to the club was the same as the board's loyalty to Jones, and he left for Spurs. Then came a Gray period, followed by the We Man, Strachan. The board did not know whether they wanted to renew his contract or not, so he left for Scotland. Then came Wigley, who had achieved success with the youth, and knew the club. That was probably the problem, as he was soon replaced by Sturrock. Sturrock had achieved success at Plymouth, but the board supported player-power, in the form of Beattie, rather than the manager, so Sturrock left. Beattie was transferred soon after. Then came a certain Harry Redknapp and his assistant Jim Smith. Delight at St Mary's, with the stadium ringing to the sound of 'Harry and Jim, Harry and Jim', purloined from their neighbours. Their year of success was followed by Bassett and Wise, and then the current incumbent, George Burley 'ably?' assisted by Sir Clive Woodward.

Now, on my rekoning, that works out at a change of management every couple of years. What sort of manager would regard such an appointment as a pensionable post? Very few! More like a poisoned chalice.

Good Luck George. I cannot recall an instance where he has left a club and run to the press with all the gory details of the 'behind the scenes' activity. There are not many honourable gentlemen in football, but he is certainly one.

Even without bias, it's difficult for anyone to return to an old job. This will be no different for Hoddle, although most of his success was on the back of Dave Jones' investment and development at the club. Hoddle was agood player and hasn't had any real success as a manager. Plus all the "alternative" ideas are unsettling.
The best managers are not necessarily those that were good players. Look at Wenger for example.
The Saints need some new blood. Burley hasn't been that successful this season, although injuries haven't helped. Lundekvam is certainly missed at tha back.
we missed out on Lawrie Sanchez last time. Although he didn't gel at Fulham, he has the experience of doing best with a limited squad.

I reckon we should go for either:

Chrissy Coleman
Martin Allen
Possibly Shearer (needs the experience and it would be a good start)

Whoever it is needs to get the teams fitness up so they are fighting for every ball. Lets get pushing for promotion and get back in the Prem - where we belong!

All this speculation is fantastic..... it acheives very little, but hey who cares.

The thing that strikes me most, is that there are so many names out there that most Saints fans would be happy with! I cannot remember a time when there were so many good managers out of a job, if ever we were spoilt for choice, it was now.

So Mr Crouch.. Bring in the best Man for the job and if poss.... spend some wedge on the squad.

You bet your life I know my stuff, and thanks for the compliment. I know my stuff because I have probably seen your lot, on your ground, far mor times than most of the contributers on this subject have been to the only South Coast ground that hosts Premier League football.
Crap ground? I go to watch what is performed at the ground, not to admire the architecture! I seem to remember that the team you support had higher league status at The Dell for longer than they achieved at the gas works site.
Dodgy Chairman? He has DELIVERED on his promises. If that is dodgy, then I appreciate dodgy!
Fans stink of fish! Isn't that a wee bit childish for someone who, I guess, would claim to be an adult?

If George accepts the Scotland job then we have to look at the last few years and make a logical decision which is best for this club. Being a 'Saint' for over 50 years I have seen many managers come and go after the long managership of Saint Ted Bates. some of the choices have been less then popular and possibly on the cheap. Our current financial position is not helping.

We must consider ,in my opinion, the three main options. Experience (Glen Hoddle), Paul Ince (up and coming manager) or take a gamble on Alan Shearer as a possible new manager. The outsiders for me, if money allowed would be Martin Jol or Chris Coleman.

A message to the Board....be daring, be bold and to fill St Marys.... be BRAVE

A couple of weeks ago it looked as though Harry was going to up sticks and head for the frozen north. Saints fans flooded The News forums (and others) with intelligent and witty comments along the lines of "you're going down" and "Pompey scum are finished" etc. etc. Hardly surprising, therefore, that there are one or two comments from our side of the fence on here.
Though it pains me to say it I think there will be plenty of good people who will want the job at St Marys. Hopefully, though, your weak and divided Board will plump for the "fans choice" and get Hoddle, or Shearer, or better still Mick Channon (are you getting a tear in your eye at the very mention of the great man's name?). If they do then you can look forward to a derby game with Bournemouth or Yeovil for the next few years and best of all the 1978 - 2003 aberration will just be a distant memory. Can't wait.

Hoddle is the man for me. He made the difference for Saints in terms of giving the players more psychological grit on the pitch. Strachan simply inherited this from him, before his own sabbatical and subsequent flit north of the border as his own ideas started to run out. Hoddle had his faults in terms of letting the club down at the end but his lifelong Spurs loyalties were always going to be tested when that job came up - at least he knows the worse now!

The players that took us down should have taken us back up! Otherwise, what was the pay cut structure for in the first place!
Saints would have bounced straight back with the players we went down with.

We have been poorly managed and the damage is irreversible I fear.

Bottom line ... There is no money to spend and we are about 8 players short of a Promotion push. Time for a reality check.

It's Hoddle for me, lets be honest now and say that the only club he would have left us for was Spurs as he loved it their. I would welcome him back. I have no doubt about his abilities as a coach and getting the best out of players. I think the players we have are mediocre, laid back, unfit and have little interest in doing well for the club as they never knew if they were going to play the next game. I think Hoddle will install the stability in the side which is needed to get a winning formula. He will also get shot of the players who don't pull their weight for the team. With him in charge i believe we can get things together and gate crash the play off's and would give him another chance.

I think some people are looking thru rose-tinted spectacles. What we DON'T want, I believe, is a Mick Channon or Matt Le Tiss. It doesn't matter how much loyalty they have for Saints, they have little or no experience of successful management.
Irrespective of his leaving us at short notice, and what some people have said about him having won nothing in the past, I wouldn't be totally against Hoddle coming back. But I'm open to other suggestions - Coleman, Ince etc.

I agree we need a disciplinariun (is there such a word??), someone that will put a rocket up a players arse when it's needed but I also think we need a football man that puts fitness high on the training schedule a la Gordon Strachan.

But Le Tissier? Please!!!!!! What sort of fitness regime would HE put our players thru???????? Great player though he was and still Le God at the Dell/St. Marys AS A PLAYER, he's not the man to replace Burley.

I think it is time to forgive and forget about what Glenn Hoddle done by going to spurs. what if Matt Le Tissier had done the same by coming to manage saints from another team i dought we would all care. so come on we played some good football under Glenn and he got some good players in, so lets get him in !!
theres only one GLENN HODDLE !!!!!!!

Sorry Nathan, you and your buddies who are asking for a 'top manager' to be appointed seem to forget that, although Brighton wear 'SKINT' on their shirts, your club's finances wear the same sign.
Let's imagine a 'top manager' did arrive, he would want cash, not green shield stamps, to build a team to get into the top half of your league, without even a thought of the play-off zone.
You need an older, quality player, who would come in and be your player/manager. Given more time than the current average of two years, which is what has been done for the past quarter-century.
It is a sad fact of life, the mistakes made over the past decades have come home to roost.

Get Well Soon!

The only criteria for the next manager, has to be t get the very best man available!! so we in Hoddle a manager who has great success at Swindon did really well at Chelsea went to manage England to a World cup, did great with Saints accepted a poison challis at Spurs and did ok at Wolves his record of achievement is top draw against Bill Davis, Alan Shearer, Paul Ince, Coleman.etc.

All business have to make tough decisions the last time we had this opportunity with Hoddle a section of our emotional fans forced the board away from Hoddle and we have paid the price ever since, collectively lets not make the same mistake again!

Hoddle - Hard to do well as a manager when half the fans are against you from the start, bad move

Shearer - Erm repeat of Hoddle as soon as the barcodes job comes up, would you be happy being another stepping stone for someones dream job?

Le Tissier - Needs to get some experience first, can't see him wanting it anyway as he isn't giving the signals that he wants a managers job

Adams - Should've got it ages back but never did, wrong time now

Think you boys would do well to get Coleman down there

The only sensible appointment is GLEN HODDLE as we will know what we are getting and part of his team is already at the club (John Gorman)which will mean not having to pay out for an assistant . He has recently turned down other offers and appears to be ready to make it up to us all and take us back where we should be. He had already agreed to return before until Lowe bottled it just Before Calling the press Conference To Announce It.Lets forgive as Newcastle Fans have With Keegan And Pompey Have with agent Redknapp And get behind Hoddle and cheer him and the boys back to the premiership by playing attractive football that we enjoy watching and not kick and chase like we would get under the likes of davies or big sam. Go On Crouchie Bring On HODDLE.!!!!!!!!!!!

It doesnt really matter what anyone says, the board are laughing. They have a nice compensation pack to split amongst themselves, no worries about money being spent in the rest of this transfer window because theres nobody to do the bidding and we all know all the board care about is money.
Hoddle, Jones , Shearer isn't it great that we look to the future with a massive step back or a striker with no experience, we are in enough trouble we need experience and a proven talent of getting the most out of players who really have given up hope.
I have no doubt that this will fall on deaf ears but if there is just the slightest hope someone on the board sees this please please think carefully because we need a reason to look to the future and a not backwards. We used to be everyone second club now we are just a laughing stock

Please not Shearer. No experience and no love for the club. If people still blame Hoddle for going to his boyhood team, then why get Shearer in to do the same.
Hoddle is not going to leave us for Spurs a second time and where else are we going to get that level of quality? Remember we have no money to spend.
Hoddle to bring on some decent young and cheap English lads might just work.
