Gorman delighted with Saints' display in defeat

6:38am Wednesday 30th January 2008

John Gorman declared himself proud of his side despite losing 1-0 to Norwich at St Mary's last night.

On the face of it, a sixth home defeat of the season might not seem like much to be proud of.

But Saints put in a very good display and were actually applauded off the pitch at the end.

Playing an adventurous 4-3-3 formation, they played some good stuff, hit the woodwork three times and missed their second penalty in successive games.

The caretaker manager said: "We put in an excellent performance.

"Their players and manager said what a wonderful performance we put in.

"They think they got away with a little bit of, not daylight robbery, but getting the break.

"The goal took a deflection but it was a great strike and their only real opportunity in open play was that.

"(Football board director) Lawrie McMenemy came down and said the fans really enjoyed the football.

"We tried a new system and the lads really took it on board and did great for the first time we did it."

Gorman added: "The chairman (Leon Crouch) came down and said we didn't lose the game, it was stolen from us.

"He was delighted with the performance and the effort the lads put in.

"I'm enjoying it and loving the chance to express ourselves, we're not going behind George's back with the type of football.

"Jason (Dodd, fellow caretaker) said it was the kind of football Southampton used to play.

"That's what the fans want to see."

How can you be pleased with losing at home to Norwich? We should be spanking these teams if we want our Premier league place back. Let's hope this plank doesn't get the managers job.

Although we lost, I enjoyed last night's game more than any other one this season. We were unlucky a number of times and another night would have scored 4 or 5 at least. What was most pleasing was to see the team have some fight and energy and passion (Andrew Davies should be made captain, he was superb). Think it proves that not only was Burley sucking the life out of fans, but he was doing it to his own players too.

Shame we lost, but well played all the same Saints.

Great display. Bad penalty. Bad referee.
Enjoyed the game for the first time in ages.
Passion, commitment and constant running.
If we carry on playin like that we are going to win a hell of a lot more than we lose.
Norwich must be pinching themselves with that.
Keep that ethos Saints.

Jimmy Case hit the nail on the head when he questioned the attitude of Wright-Phillips. He should also look at John and Euell as players who didn't give it 100%. As for the rest they should feel mighty unluckym, especially Rasiak. Who knows, a new manager might be able to get the best out of him?

I'm sorry, am I missing something here!? We lost at home to a 3rd rate side and people are happy with the way we played? Yes we hit the woodwork 3 times but the amount of wayward passes, wayward shots (not including the "Lovejoy" penalty which gave a small child in row FF a nose bleed!) and the lack of creation was as worrying as ever. We need a manager and shake up immediately as there are still to many poor performances (from the same players).

One final point. Saturday they reduced the ticket prices to £15 and got £25k. Last night there was 18,000 there and no atmosphere. Think about it Saints and knock the prices down to attract people otherwise attendances are going to continue to head South!!

Euell didn't give 100%? Utter rubbish! We effectively played 4/3/3 and so he was expected to be the ball winner in midfield, which he did very effectively. His passing was good last night as well.

For me it was a great display, full of good passing, movement and effort. Just a shame we couldn't convert any of the chances!

Easilly the best performance of the season. If we had played like that all year we would have been top 6 easy. We played rubbish against Scunthorpe and won, last night we played well and lost, that's football.
Last night was the first game I have enjoyed all season, keep playing the same way and results will come. To me emphasised the fact that GB had lost the plot and the players.

The hangover from the nightmare that was the Burley era continues.... lots of brisk short passing but no end product. Yet again we were beaten by a poor side that hardly figured in the game. Bring in Billy Davies now to get rid of all the unnecessary fancy football - it's a luxury we really can't afford.

Well if where we are is that The Chairman, The Manager & Lawrie Mac are happy losing to Norwich then we are in a worse state than what I thought!
Yes the game and tactics were interesting and different but sorry Wright -Phillips is not the answer as I would have thought was clear by now.Surman is not a Central Midfielder wether he thinks so or not so thank goodness Safri is back soon! I for one hope Viafara is not sold as we need him alogside Safri in the middle with Hamill & Surman down the flanks! I also believe McGoldrick deserves a chance up front as he seems to score for the reserves but for whatever reason hasnt been given an oppurtunity.
Come on Saints get things sorted as yes it was better last night but please dont be fooled by the enormous cracks that performance & the club are trying to paper over!

So what are Saints supposed to do, Give the Season ticket holders some money back ? As if you start knowcking the on the day prices down you then devalue the season tickets for those fans who pay up front and come every game.
You have to realise they can't do that and expect people to buy them next year !

As for last nights performance, it was shocking... can't take a penalty, can't hit a shot on goal. BWP should be sold A.S.A.P as he was tired after 15 minutes and just couldn't be bothered, and although John was our best striker all night, that doesn't say much !

Where do I start.......
If ever a Score-line never told the Story!!!
What a great performance by each and every player last night, and the one that stood out for me was Skacel on the left and Thomas.
Never before under Burley, have I seen such a committed performance with pace, passing, tracking back and tackles going in.
And the most joy out of it? WE PLAYED FOR 90MINS!!!!!!!
Those of you who never went to the game have commented on here about rubbish, that proves that you never went to the game.
Chants of 1-0 to the Referee have never been used before so accurately!!
Davies should be Captain, and even be looked at for England, how we have picked up a bargain and someone who's value must be near 7-10million in the time he has been with us.

If this is the way we are going to perform, then keep Doddy and Gorman until we find a Manager that can give the fans what we had last night.

Alright we lost, but Norwich who yes we should batter, which we did in terms of football played, are on a 10 game unbeaten run (cant be that bad).
We hit the post countless times and should have won by a Cricket score, and some might say well we didnt score, but that was all it was that stopped us, a post and a referee. The only down-side was John missing a penalty, but Rasiak missed Saturday, Euell missed weeks ago (all in the same end) and so John put his name on it.

End of the day, ive never been so happy about a performance and spending money on a game we lost. YOU DID US PROUD LADS!!

We did not realise that it was possible for one man to make so many errors of judgement and stupid mistakes in 90 minutes of football. We are sorry he did not award the other two penalties you should have had and we are understand your frustration at the incorrect award of free kicks following legitimate tackles by your players. We also regret that he managed to turn a blind eye to the shirt pulling, deliberate obstruction and follow through tackles by the opposition defence. We would like to reassure you that we will send you a decent referee for your next game but unfortunately as you will probably have realised by now there are no good referees in the Championship.

I thought we played really well last night, and it was the first time I actually felt as though I was entertained.

We lost yes, but we should of lost to Bury when we were poor, so what would people want our win to be replaced with a loss and our loss replaced with a win, so effecively we go out of the cup and are embarassed, and get 3 points in the league which will actually get people excited about getting into the playoffs, then realise aftrer a few games that we wouldn't actually get there any way.

So basically dreamers, stop dreaming, this season is a season to be pleased about our cup success and realise that George left too late for us to stand any chance of getting promoted. So everyone who still isn't happy about losing to crap like Norwich then just don't bother supporting the Saints no more

Reading the comments on this site has been interesting - I thought I would be the only one to be proud of the performance of the team. I thought there would be more moaning and boo-boys leaving derogatory posts.

I've been surprised to see the support for the team and the proudness of the fans even though we lost. Apart from BWP, I think everyone was up for that game last night. It hurts that we still lost and dropped a place in the league but I think the performance showed that there is life after George Burley and I'm starting to see the real chance of a push up the table if we keep playing like that.

Having said that, I'm still wondering if I'd like to have seen a bad performance and get the 3 points - there doesn't seem to be any way of us playing well AND getting the 3 points at the moment.

But I'm sure that will change - COYR!!! Back on track for Saturday please!!

The point is... at least it ENTERTAINS the fans. If you want to watch a team that wins every week, go and watch Man Utd.

After half a season of boring, passionless football, it was nice to see some action, some enthusiasm and some passion from the side.

No Saints fan is dancing in the street after a defeat, but if you can't take some positives from an improved performance and attitude and being entertained, then you really are missing the point of going to football in the first place.

Yes we lost last night and it has been a poor season for the saints but with all the things that have happend to the lads this year it has affected their confidence and now its worse by burley in scotland, so i urge in our next home match every single fan even in the chapel to get behind the lads and show them we still love them. then next season we can have new investment and i think the new manager for saints should be chris coleman as he done a great job for fulham and he struggled in spain but most english managers do, all the board have to do is speak to him about a pre-contract signing so once he is off his holiday he can start his managerial career at saints.

Whilst I agree that the team played much better last night than in recent weeks, its is results that count. BWP has no determination, doesn't even chase the ball unless its 60-40 in his favor and this has a big detriment on the team. The different was instant whan Hammil came on, chases and battles relentlessly for every ball. Can't understand why he did not start when he is by far our best and fittest player. Euell is a good player but has done nothing since arriving at saints (scored 1 goal) he is either lasy/not interested or playing out of position, I say this because almost every ball he plays, plays us into trouble, he chases very little and he is generally weak. He does 1 or 2 good things in 90 mins, and I am sorry but that is just not good enough yet he plays every game and never gets subbed. My final point is why did John take the penalty and not Rasiak? I know his penalty was s**t on Sat but at least he got it in (eventually) and he is our designated penalty taker so why oh why didn't he take it?????? Lets get a new manager in before Place on sat so the team can get some stability for the remainder of the season.

With the exception of one un-named player who seems 2 or 3 slice short of a loaf there were some great performances out there and based on that alone we will move up the ladder.

If Rasiak wasn't to take the penalty, then surely Drew Surman should have been next in the pecking order? He's not missed from the spot. But I agree that Rasiak should have taken it, especially as no way would he have hit it as poorly he did against Bury.

The problem is with some Saints fans is that they believe that we are still a Premiership side and have premiership players, which is wrong we are not! It comes accross sobish, like we're Southampton fc we should be better, we are not live with it. Look at the demise of teams like Sheff Wednesday and Leeds, they may be on the up now but it's taken time, and in some way they have always been seen as bigger and better clubs than us, for example we have never won a European cup.

So no I'm not happy that we are near the relegation zone but just because we lost last night, it doesn't mean that, we should be really that disapointed, the team played how we have been asking them to play all season, yet they lose and somehow it's the players fault, or Gormans or Dodds fault, no it's not it's just merly them doing what we have asked.

You dont get it do you? Winning after playing poorly (Bury, Scunthorpe etc) is fine with me too but guess what - playing poorly all the time usually means you get nothing and its not a recipe for success. Playing well and losing is very frustrating but guess what - play well regularly and you will get plenty of points. As for the players Vignal is solid but is not able to pass the ball over long distance, that is why clubs have let him go, Surman ran like he had a sack of spuds on his back, but he has done that all season. Skacel showed what he can do if he has a free role and why we paid all that money for him.
BWP needs coaching, as I have said before, He takes up bad positions and his shape is wrong when receiving the ball, please get his old man down for a few days.
If you feel hacked off imagine how the players feel after the effort they put in as a team to try and win that game last night?.

When I saw the result yesterday, my initial thought was that we've hit rock bottom. I thought too of the superb effort that Havant and Waterlooville gave in holding Liverpool for 45 minutes and defeating the Leauge 1 leaders 4-0. My initial reaction was based on this result, we'd be hard pressed to get a result against Havant.

After having read all the posts, sounds as though Saints put on a great show even though they undeservably lost so we can only hope this is the turning point and once Safri and Viafara return, things will continue to improve.

Maybe we should hold back on appointing a New Manager as long as Gorman and Dodsie can do the bizz and motivate the players. Good to see Raziak motivated this bodes well moving forward.

We all know that this league can turn very quickly and whilst I concede that we are not going to get into the playoffs this season, I remain optimistic about the future.

I\\\'m sorry, am I missing something here!? We lost at home to a 3rd rate side and people are happy with the way we played? Yes we hit the woodwork 3 times but the amount of wayward passes, wayward shots (not including the \\\"Lovejoy\\\" penalty which gave a small child in row FF a nose bleed!) and the lack of creation was as worrying as ever.
I completely agree.

Of course im happy that we played better, as the one thing we need is a bit of passion in our football.

but for a "manager" to say he is pleased with a losing home performance... its a joke.

Quite agree - give it to them to the end of the season - if it goes well great, make it permanent, if not there'll be more choices on the market then.

There really are some small-minded "fans" on this site. Last night Saints gave everything they could and we will play a lot worse and win heavily. It was one of those nights but to slag off the manager and certain players only proves what a limited knowledge you have of football(Certain fans, i know). Gorman isnt pleased at losing, merely happy with the display given. What he said was spot on. Also its the first time this season at SMS that the fans were up for it so there must have been something in the performance to warrant the applause both at half tinme and full time. If this is a marker for future Saints games then we will be fine. For those "fans" who constantly arent happy, get behind your team and stop moaning. (Bet half of whingers dont actually go but heyho)

The performance was one of the better ones of the season however Norwich were abysmal and didn't look up for it in the first half hour. We wouldn't of got away with it against a top 6 side.
Some of our play is 1 paced and I think they are over coached and just going thru the motions. There is a fear factor in our game and the players appear to be afraid to express themselves when they play. Who ever is in charge should pick the best 11 players in their favoured positions and let them get on with it. As for the next manager only god knows, who wants to come to a club STILL on the way down?

Last night was the first home game we've missed in over six years. We took a "sickie" (heavey colds) and didn't fancy the 200 mile trip home after a defeat. Although we're quite used to that of late!

I wont comment on a game I've not seen for myself, but we can go either way now; win some and we might get to a play off slot if everyone above us loose; loose some and we're on our way to swapping places with Notts. Forest and Leeds Utd. in League One.

After supporting Saints for over twenty years, with the last two years driving down to St Mary's from Salop for every home game, I fear this may well be my last. Let's face it I "saved" over £30 in fuel costs last night!

I think the point that they are trying to get across is that we should have that much pride/passion/spirit every game we play, not just once in a while.
Hopefully with burley out then things will improve, and we'll start seeing some of the pride that i've always associated with southampton players, instead of players that look confused and bored all the time!

I didn't go last night but what i have heared and read is that we played some good football.
I like John Gorman & Jason Dodd but i think in the best intrest of the club the board should bring in a permanent manager so that he can assess what players he has at the club and where he needs a change. I hope the new man is in by the QPR game as iam going down to cheer the boys on to comfortable win hopefully.

Although we lost last night, I left feeling enthused and excited about what I saw. This was the first time this season I left feeling drained after a thrilling game. As a fan, it had everything I want to see after a hard day at work; passion, not-stop running, controversy, great saves, near misses....need I go on.
It was hard to understand how we lost other than to say we missed out chances. But strikers need confidence to perform and last night was the start. Play like that at Palace and 3points are ours.

"How can you be pleased with losing at home to Norwich? We should be spanking these teams."

"We lost at home to a 3rd rate side"

"The Manager & Lawrie Mac are happy losing to Norwich then we are in a worse state than what I thought!"

It looks like there are some bitter fans fans suffering from dillusions of grandure! You say Norwich is a 3rd rate side, well they are now unbeaten for the last 10 league games.

At least the Norwich fans are not 3rd rate, 5 points clear at the bottom and we still sold out the stadium. While you are mid table and your own fans are complaining that "Last night there was 18,000 there and no atmosphere."

It`s nice to see there are no bad losers on here, i hope you boys don`t get sucked into the bottom three, think it would be a good idea to get a striker who can score, you can`t afford to miss so many chances and the penalty say no more, goodluck for the rest of the season.
