Saints in takeover talks with Gregg?

9:10am Wednesday 13th February 2008

Former Everton director Paul Gregg is the latest person to be linked with a possible takeover at Saints.

Gregg, who left Goodison Park three years ago, is said to be in "advanced" talks with the club.

Gregg last summer failed in a bid to buy a controlling stake in Sheffield Wednesday.

Last week, Saints' board put on hold the search for a new manager in the wake of a stock exchange announcement regarding potential new investment in the club.

But after last night's 3-2 defeat at Stoke - Saints' second reverse in 72 hours - the board face a dilemma today as to whether to continue with caretaker managers John Gorman and Jason Dodd.

Their decision may hinge on how close any deal for new investment is.

Born in Scarborough in 1941, Gregg has also previously been linked with a takeover bid at Chester City.

Now based in Florida, his estimated wealth is thought to be in excess of £100m.

Gregg made his money in the entertainment world, building Apollo Leisure Group into the UK's biggest theatre owner and largest privately owned company operating in Western Europe.

After selling up to SFX in 1999, he was a large stakeholder in Everton, with more than 20 per cent of the shares, before falling out with chairman Bill Kenwright.

Gregg very nearly brokered a deal with Wednesday last year and had even satisfactorily completed due diligence.

However, he pulled out because only 30 per cent of the club's shares, which were controlled by the board, could be delivered with any certainty, leaving him short of a controlling 51 per cent stake.

Beware though Mr Crouch...

Paul Gregg was involved at Everton before....

As was Andy Oldknow.

Quick return for Oldknow and Hone?

We have not got time now, to worry about who is buying the club. The main priority must be to get a "manager" in place asap.
Pay Mk Dons compensation for Paul Ince, or play them next season.
The club will say that they can't afford to do this, imo, they can't afford not to.

Who would be the best person to take over? Dowie? Coleman?

On a slightly unrelated note to this story, does anyone else find it reshreshing that for the first time this season the O/S is not talking about stringing a run of wins together and making the playoffs?

Personally I think it is great news that they have stopped trying to glaze over the issues at hand and for the first time relegation has been mentioned. Lets hope things have finally dawned on the club that the "New Edge" the players have shown since "Their choice" has taken over has resulted in no league wins and more defeats than draws!

I sincerly agree with "Hank" we need something new, continuity only brings continuity of bad results, I think Ince could do the job for us much the same as Keane has done for Sunderland.

P.S
I think it is a shame that even Shearer has put himself out of the running, if we cannot attract someone who has never managed before who himself states he needs experience before he can get the job he wants, who can we get!?!

What a waste of a post (and you seem to be lobbing it in more than once). Why would you pay someone to take your season ticket off you and refuse refunds? It doesn't make sense and it's not funny. How is bungee jumping without a rope different from jumping? You're the friggin' timewaster.

Why respond to such a ''waste of a post''

Nice to see that you are happy at the going's on.

Missed 3 games in 14 years and now is the time im getting annoyed.
Why should I put up with the fact ive shelled out £9,000 over the years?

That could have been handy money for a morgage deposit.
Hard earned cash, and the players earn that in one week.

I personally thought Karl adding a bit of light humour to an otherwise thoroughly depressing situation was quite welcome.

We have to be honest - we all parade on these message boards day in day out and display our true passion and frustration at what has been going on at our beloved club. The reality is that our board are now working in extreme circumstances (created by a sequence of poor decisions by their predecessors)... For the short term we are continuing with the unexperienced and naively blind Dodd/Gorman combo - this is due to the air of expectation of yet another potential financial suitor... We are using a squad of players that George Burley squandered the fitness and enthusiasm of... We have lost Rasiak (our goals man)... We have lost Skacel (One of a very few left sided options that we had)... We have loaned an international leftback from Villa only to typically carve his enthusiasm and confidence from his soul... We languish a few places above the deadly drop zone....

And yet we are told twice in a week that we are confident that things will get better after two games in which we have lost 3-2... I say keep the humour coming!!!!

COYR!

I ain't happy but I am still prepared to support this club even after 18 years of "shelling out" my money!
I agree with you, the players are paid well and they need to turn this around and after if the second half last night is anything to go by, perhaps Gorman has snapped and bit their legs, so bring on Rovers and then Plymouth!

Totally agree, all we keep hearing about is available managers, managers that have been sacked for not being good enough, Cotterill, Dowie, Adams, Gregory, Hoddle, etc...etc...
Ince was once the 6/4 fav to come here, he hasn't ruled himself out, like many of the others, we should approach MK Dons and get him on board now.
The takeover, if there is one, should be a completely seperate issue.

The last manager we got from Coventry did ok! And he took them down! Remember him!

It just doesn't work like that. Dowie was given NO time at Charlton and very difficult to manage that club after 14 years from Curbs.

Dowie is a good manager, will learn and get better. Probably got sacked for telling Ranson and SISU what a bunch of wakners they are. He was doing ok at the start of the season before the club problems arose.

What a waste of a post (and you seem to be lobbing it in more than once). Why would you pay someone to take your season ticket off you and refuse refunds? It doesn\'t make sense and it\'s not funny. How is bungee jumping without a rope different from jumping? You\'re the friggin\' timewaster.
Yeah, do us all a favour and don\'t bother turning up again if this is how you feel!
you pair of muppets - this post was actually quite amusing and this guy is just purely showing his hurt, passion and disappointment in a comical way. It is aggressive fans like you, who insist everyone should deal with it like you do, who (friggin\') waste your posts. Actually you\'re right lets all keep smiling and backing a failing regime - that way the staff and squad can stay in their comfort zone and there is no pressure on the powers that be to really make a change that will take us forward. There is a very fine line between supporting your team at all costs and having no ambition. I\'m amazed that you are so happy to just turn up and support even though you must see the wrongs in the current set up. You probably think Lowe should still be here... yes the man who got rid of Sturrock when we weren\'t in trouble and took us down.
You are the muppet - your intellectual post demonstrates that!
And keep your assumptions to yourself!
The only support I have talked about is towards Gorman and Dodds, not the board, and not the players - unless they start to show they care about this club!
Things are wrong with our club, I ain't happy about it and the past will not put it right!

Great, another talented youth comes through our ranks - Lallana is ready to burst into the first team,a nd will no doubt be snapped up by a bigger club. We cannot even hold onto our youth and with the third failed attempt to get back into the Premiership we will struggle to attract any players of Pedigree. Welcome to the new saints era. I predict that our Championship history will be similar to that of the 26 years in the Premiership - nothing but two FA Cup finals. In ten years time we may just get into the playoffs again which will be followed by relegation.

Time to seek and follow another team!

You cannot use the new stadium argument to justify our recent performances. I agree we gave nothing away lightly at the Dell but that has nothing to do with the location or the supporters screaming from the terraces. Arsenal's new stadium has not stopped them albeit with a small wobble to begin with. Just what is it that makes Saints so unattractive - I just don't get it!

very shortly the club will be issuing season ticket renewals,no doubt at a bargain reduced price for early renewals. I have been a season ticket holder for almost 30 years but what will be the incentive to renew this year. The prospect of playing in league one perhaps, the club going into administration;(alth

ough that may not be a bad thing if it gets rid of all the dead wood within the club). This is by far the worst team we have ever had, when will someone realise that Jermaine Wright is not good enough to get into most pub teams let alone a Championship one. The club is completely rudderless, there is no leader on the pitch the current management set-up clearly isn't working and the Directors of the club who claim to be fans could not manage the hot dog stalls outside the ground. What has gone wrong, where is all the money from all the decent players we have sold over recent years? Why cant we attract investment,I have my own ideas but I will keep them to myself as I dont want to be sued.Leon Crouch was deposed once as Chairman, presumably as he could not broker any deal, how further forward are we now? How many interested parties are there within the club who have not invested a penny of ther own money but are but are by their actions deterring possible investors. The real losers in all of this sorry state of affairs are the fans, especially season ticket holders, members and fans who continue to support the team home and away as the club they love becomes a laughing stock. At least living in Sheffield I dont have to put up with any gloating skates but I am sure they are loving every minute of this.

Whatever the board do as far as take-overs are concerned is going to be too late this season to have any noticeable effect on our final league position.
I am like many other posters, of the opinion that we have too much quality in the squad to be relegated if we play to our potential, HOWEVER unless we get a change of management in the very near future, the youngsters who make up much of the quality at SFC will either get snapped up by other more astute clubs, or they will become disillusioned by never getting a chance in the first team and they will seek to leave themselves.
Our reserve team is having an excellent season, and I would be more than happy if the entire reserve team played the next league match - at least they show some spirit and desire to perform for their club.

if they can play a so called (GREAT) second half after a rollicking.there is something sadly lacking with the team effort, they should be giving 100% for a club in both halves,i would rather see our club go down, to be rebuilt with loyal players who want to play both halves, than players who only play a good second half, and only if they are read the riot act, if their hearts are not in it i would rather see the youngsters although not so experienced play their hearts out for a full 90 minutes, at least we would know they did the very best they could, and we could be proud, but this is an accident waiting to happen and no matter how much we care we have no say in how the team plays so i am very sad to say,its getting harder to support what is happening, a once proud saints fan is very sad the team we have might not play in this devision after this season.
went to stoke on tuesday was ready to go home at half time we were **** 2nd half we improved but it was so obvious that we are so average we have no leaders from the chairman right down to the subs bench after the 20 min onslaught it was so easy to see we needed hammill and another sub on to freshen things up to keep up the momentem if we lose on saturday i think that could kill any confidence we have left ps can anybody tell me why euell gets picked he is not fit to lace hugh fishers boots

Some people have plenty of time to waste writing screeds of rubbish. All I say is support the team and the managers.ALL IS NOT LOST.But the board need to get something sorted soon. The relegation bug is catching and a few more "unlucky" results could mean panic sets in.So we need action and quick

C'mon everyone should be positive for a change! At least we came back in the second half. Earlier in the season we were caving in in these situations!

The only reason nothing has happened yet is because we are still in the cup.Should we win on Saturday and draw a big team away, nothing will then happen until that game is played, giving the likes of Lowe a few more grand to pocket. If we get knocked out on Saturday you will hear an announcement Mon or Tue.
