Baird - we didn't deserve to make the playoffs

EASTLEIGH manager Ian Baird admitted his side didn't deserve to make the Blue Square South play-offs after a dismal end to the season.

The Spitfires picked up just three points from their final six games, culminating in Saturday's 4-1 thrashing at a Thurrock side who had nothing to play for.

As a result, Eastleigh narrowly missed out on the play-off place that had looked so assured just a few weeks ago.

But Baird was furious at the officiating during the loss at Thurrock, which he believed cost them the game.

"The first goal is blatantly offside and then there was the penalty that never was a penalty," he said.

"It's hit Anthony Riviere on his chest and he's been sent off. The referee couldn't wait to get the red card out.

"We've had some bad luck today."

Nice to hear a manager being honest and admitting the team weren't quite good enough. He's taken us from the bottom half of the table early season to the brink of the playoffs - a very good acheivement. We'll be back bigger and better next season.

As for Havant mark title favourties at the start of the season and you've lost your manager and captain since then and finshed only 7th. Not a great season. You can go on about the cup run all you want but as we all know its league performance that managers are judged on. I think most Havant fans, if their honest, know that Shuan Gale is just a sop gap manager untill you get a more long term man in the hot seat.

Gale won't take havant up next year - a new manager might.

Till next season....

Rendel , i'm not certain that even you beleive that.

on what basis do you base your thoughts on Shaun Gale on?

as for not having a great season, when Ian Baird left I was offerd a deal by one of my mates , 2nd round of the fa cup and 9th in the league , I accepted that deal, so 7th in the league and 4th round of the fa cup makes a pretty decent season to me.
you see, when you lose your manager I think it takes a club a month to adjust , by the end of october youre into the fa cup and if youre lucky enough to get to the fourth round your league season doesn't really get back into the swing again until february.
we, from the position we got ourselfs into should've made the play offs , but in all honesty we were never apart from one week in a play off position.
unlike a team that I quote "its lewes/eastbourne, us and two others now, we only need 2 wins from our last 6 games to qualify" can't quite remember who made that quote Rendel, can you ?
you can try and whitewash over our cup run if you want, but at the end of the day which of our clubs profile was raised most this season.
and quite honestly what will you be talking about this season in 20 years time?

btw we didn't lose our captain as far as i'm aware Tom Jordan is still a H&W player :-0

I'm gutted we didn't get in the play offs.
The stupid sending offs and bookings didn't help.
Hopefully by going so close this season we can go at least one place higher next season.
Mark i hope you enjoyed your season coz i certainly enjoyed ours.
Will see you down the Rose Bowl soon i expect.

I do believe that Mark. When you lose a manager who has been at a club a few years (Baird ) its tempting to go for the easy option and just quickly promote someone already at the club (as Havant did) up to the managers position. Saints have tried it a few times over the years (Wigley, Gray etc.), England did it with Mclaren and we tried it with David Hughes. IMO it rarely works. Surely much better to appoint a caretaker manager for a few weeks and actually sepnd some time looking for the right man rather than just making a quick appointment. I think after you've lost a long term manager you need to make a few changes at a club and in the backroom staff. It took us a while to get the right man after Doz left the hotseat and I don't think Havant have got it right yet. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Ncie to hear you read and digest all my posts thoroughly mark anyway. So you'd have taken 9th then. Wow thats pretty ambitious then for a club starting the seaon as title favourites.

As for Jordan well he seems to be a H & W player when it comes to the wage bill - not so much when it comes to playing football games, I guess you'll be looking to quietly sell him this summer and get him off the wage bill. As I said before his value will have gone down as he hasn't played for months. Surely you should have just taken the highest offer on the table back in Dec/Jan? I guess you can afford the several K its cost you out of the cup money - I wonder if you'll waste the rest of it too! Anyway I think I've done the Tom Jordan situation to death now so I better stop there!

Rendel, we promoted Ian Baird from within very quickly when Dave Leworthy was fired, and he didn't do so bad for us, despite whats gone on these last few months.

We all think Shaun Gale has done a fantastic job this season, and it wasn't us that considered ourselves to be favourites at the start of the season, blame that on the bookies. Bairdy would often tell us to judge him when he's won something, so I guess the jury's still out.
