Pearson - we need our best

7:03am Monday 28th April 2008

NIGEL Pearson has said he expects his players to put in one of their best performances of the season at the Hawthorns tonight.

The Saints boss admitted Saturday's results, which saw Saints slip into the bottom three, could not have been any worse for his side.

And he is under no illusions that tonight's trip to face title favourites West Brom, who can effectively secure promotion with a point, will be a difficult one.

However, Pearson said the players are fully aware of what is required and he expects an impressive display in front of the Sky TV cameras.

"They have been very positive and I expect them to go and put in one of our best performances, because that's what's required at this stage," he said.

"We need a big performance from everybody concerned and the players have a responsibility and obligation to go and do that.

"It's a game that is live on television and people will be watching us, so we have got to put in the best performance that we can."

A big performance Nige? you are joking aren't you? Apart from the Bristol City match (which is looking more and more like an awful performance from BC) we have done nothing. Nil. Zero. Sweet FA. What, in the last 3 months or so have you seen that leads you to think we might put in a "performance"? All I'll say is that you should have until Christmas to see where we are in League 1, if we're in a play off place, fair enough, if not, cheerio.

That's a good point, but I fear the only way to motivate this bunch of misfits is to tell them they are in the shop-window tonight. It's obvious that most of them have not been playing with any professional pride or love of the club this season.

This site overflows with negativity from Saints fans. I know it's frustrating but why write ourselves off before we even kick off? WBA will be nervous; we'll be steely determined. It's Leicester who are going down (as I said last week when I backed them at 6/1).
If WBA lose to us they can still end up 3rd - they finish with a trip to QPR who will want to turn them over. I can see them getting twitchy if we go in 0-0 at half time. If we then snatch a goal we'll probably get 2 as they panic.
Rose tinted glasses? Maybe. But the odds on offer are too long - get your money on us to win at over 6/1 tonight.

Have you watched any football this season!?!? Since when have WBA ever been nervous, they are an attack minded team who have scored more than anyone else and came from behind more often too.

Since when have Saints shown any "steely determination" ?!?

I should admire your optimism, but at least base it on some realism please.

With "supporters" like most of the previous posts I don't know why we bother turning up tonight. Fortunately there are genuine and passionate supporters who will stick behind the team and support both tonight and next Sunday. Everyone knows that we have been let down by the board, previous managers and players for the last five seasons, but in our hearts will remain true suppoorters. This has been the most depressing season of the lot, but come on everyone - just two games to give out totally committed (and maybe blind) loyalty. To all moaners, have your say after the end of the season, support the team now or just "don't bother" - just stick to watching East Enders and Corrie etc!! Saints forever come what may.

WBA are clear favourites to win tonight, that cannot be denied. However, a few facts for you to consider, we have beaten Stoke City, Hull City, Bristol City and yes WBA this season i.e. we've beaten the top four. Don't count your chickens my friend. COYS!

Tonights game IS important, but lets not all throw ourselves off a cliff if we do get beat - even if we lose we can still do it!!!

The most important game in SFC history will be on Sunday. If we can beat Sheff Utd and Leicester don't win away at Stoke - we are there. It can be done!

We've been in the same situation in the Prem League - remember the 2-0 at Wimbledon a few years back? OK - we all know we the players now are not quite up the standard of Le Tiss and Beattie (to put it mildly), however, we can summon up the spirit of The Dell on Sunday and see the team home - I'm sure of it.

COME ON YOU SAINTS!!!!!

Sorry Nigel, but you come across as a guy who has the personality of a toadstood. The English version of Avram Grant springs to mind and if you are as lifeless in the dressing room as you are on the TV then we have no hope of motivating this team of under-performing players.
Some people are just not cut out to be a manager and this job has always looked beyond Pearson to me. I fear he will be put out of his misery when the new board take over.

There IS a small shred of optimism we can take into tonight's game - West Brom play a similar style to us (i.e. along the ground) and although they clearly do it much better than we do, it does make them vulnerable. If we were playing one of the long-ball hoofing teams, we'd have no chance of picking up any points of course; we're always hopeless against them.

You've had a change of heart since your posting to Chris at 1.32pm today......!!

We have to believe they can do it - if we don't, how can we expect them to? I believe we have the quality (Wright in goal, Ostlund, Lucketti, Perry, Vignal in defence, Licka/Surman, Safri, Viafara, Hammill/Dyer in midfield and Stern & BWP up-front)- if we play well enough and don't let WBA get an early goal, we could do very well.

Get a reality check Paul!
Have you ever considered why Nigel Pearson was given the job?
With players having to be sent out on loan, to ease the wage bill, do you really think that the club could attract, and then afford, a manager of 'proven experience'?
Managers with such a CV want a salary that matches that experience!
When the job was advertised, IF it was advertised, what was there to attract such a manager?
An experienced manager would 'have his finger on the pulse' and, on the grape-vine would be aware that there would be precious little, if any, money to spend on new players.
You expect Nigel Pearson, the current manager, to fulfil your dreams with a squad that has been allowed to decline in quality under successive managers!
To an outsider, he is doing a first rate job with a third-rate squad!
Don't you think his task is difficult enough without supporters' moaning about his lack of experience.
Give Nigel a break! Give Nigel your support!
Heaven only knows, he needs it!
I find it a trifle ironic that, being a Pompey supporter, I appear to be giving an SFC manager more support than someone, who would appear to be an SFC supporter, is!

"To an outsider, he is doing a first rate job with a third-rate squad!" Unfortunately this sums it up all to well. We might be better of in league one, get rid of the donkeys, get pocketmoney out of selling those who deserve a price tag, and let Rupert field the academy players. With some luck we might be back in championship by 2014.

Just sums up the attitude of our "supporters" -remember "Saints fans are for Life" - through thick & thin - doesn't matter what league we are in.
We need to fill the Stadium on Sunday with Saints fans who want to be there to cheer the team to victory - not with doom and gloom merchants.

May i suggest your thoughts and efforts could be put into better use at Fratton judging by Redknapps comments on MOTD last night,"lack of atmosphere", "dead" and "I hoped we would be better supported with a cup final around the corner" were mentioned by the supremo unless I'm very much mistaken.....
Did not see MOTD, but was at Fratton Park for the match.
The noise level seemed the same as usual!
Rather fancy that Harry had to say something, and would rather blame atmosphere than upset the squad with criticsm of them.
It was one of those games where the team that had the majority of possession, loses, and that does not please any manager (except the winning one!)
Despite your suggestion of where you think my thoughts and efforts should be, I will be watching on Sky Sports 1 tonight, and hope that there can be one Hampshire side to get Max points!

This time last year we were fighting for promotion, and now were fighting to stay up. I feel just as nervious now as I did for promotion last season, and with 2 of the toughest games of the season ahead of us. My optimism is not at a high. But I do surely hope they can pull it off, and stay in the Championship, as being relegated to Division 1 will not do the Saints profile any good. It will also affect any chance of getting any decent players in for next season, as we have done previously. The only decent players that we do have, are placed on loan to other clubs, which doesn't help one bit at all.

Good effort but it may be too little too late.

Let's hope we can pack St Mary's and roar Saints on to the point (at least) that they need.

I am very worried though, Sheffield United now have something to play for and you just can't assume that Stoke will beat Leicester.

Those heavy away defeats may come back to haunt us.

If only we could hold onto a lead we wouldn't be in this **** position. Good performance though and a similar effort on Sunday is what we need.

Correct

But can you honestly say you didn't expect WBA to equalise? It was as predicatable as a pointless post from Crew 657.

Just sums up the attitude of our \"supporters\" -remember \"Saints fans are for Life\" - through thick & thin - doesn\'t matter what league we are in.
We need to fill the Stadium on Sunday with Saints fans who want to be there to cheer the team to victory - not with doom and gloom merchants.
I know things have been bad this Season and we have had to watch some complete garbage, but things can only get better.
Saints till I die.
COYR\'s - 6 points this week and everything in the garden will be rosy at least for a week.
agree scum are fickle so deserve div 3 . Stains fans never see things through thick and thin...they just run away. Also top flight football needs teams and citys with spirit and a plan for the future,,,what does scumhampton have...millbrook and sholing..enough said

I said I would be back, what a great performance.I think the spirit of Southampton
will see us stay in the championship, but N. Pearson as a manager has a lot to learn, some of his substitutions were crazy and could have cost us the game.Nice to see some of the young
players doing so well.
We can do it

I didnt say i'd be there last night....you were right "a few scum fans" were probably there but you were all on lemonade as it was a kids party. Just name the time/place scummer then we'll see if your like the other no show scum on here

Ahh were we in the woods ahem "talent spotting"? And you're spot on , neither myself or other saints fans would want to arrange a meeting with you for fear of our backsides having an unwanted invasion.
As for the millbrook thing, i grew up there and now live in a nice penthouse appartment in town overlooking the water, thing is i never regret living there , i'm quite proud of it in fact. You see theres the thing with us southampton folk you pathetic muppett, we're proud of our city and our people no matter where theyre from, we all get on as one because its a friendly city. Now remind me , why don't you live in portsmouth.......squ
eak louder i can't hear?

On another note , it just goes to show how fickle you pompey lot are that you all continually post dross on these pages despite the fact that you:

Are in a major cup final

have one of the best squads in the premier league

Have a chairman who constantly bankrolls a manager who more often than not buys sub standard players ie crainie ,songo, collins msueba(whatever his name is) , jamie ashdown i could go on

and yet despite ALL of this you find time to still b##h about us. I dunno some people are never satisfied. Just to warn you though, you guys are set from a massive fall from grace VERY soon.
