Pearson: Let's spoil Sky TV's plans!

9:05pm Sunday 27th April 2008

Nigel Pearson is hoping to ruin Sky's day by inspiring his Saints side to victory at West Brom tomorrow night.

Saints have had to wait while their other relegation rivals played this weekend before getting their chance to make a mark on the table at the Hawthorns tonight.

The game has been picked for live coverage on Sky -Pearson believes partly for West Brom's success but also Saints' failures.

However, he believes his side can spoil the plans.

He said: "They (Sky) will be looking at it from both points of view.

"They'll be looking to see the promotion party from West Brom's point of view and they'll be looking to see our sad demise.

"I'd take great pleasure in making sure that doesn't happen."

Pearson added: "What's already gone on we can't change.

"It would be unprofessional to think about what's gone at this stage because it's still in our own hands, even though the two fixtures we've got are very difficult ones.

"We've got to be looking to have it in our own hands on the last day.

"It's not an easy situation for anybody involved.

"I spoke to some fans the other night and it's very difficult for them.

"Our responsibility is to go out and get the performances right but more importantly get the results right."

Pearson has strong West Brom connections, having been assistant manager at the Hawthorns under Bryan Robson for virtually two years until the latter was sacked in September 2006.

He was also there when the club signed Kevin Philips.

But Pearson is refusing to focus on anything other than Saints. "It's going to be a tough game, there's no doubt about that," he said.

We've got plenty of quality at our disposal but ultimately we have to go and perform.

"All I'm interested in us getting a result and nothing outside of that - I can't be distracted by anything else.

"It's about us going there and trying to get something out the game and hopefully win it.

"I really haven't got an interest in the fortunes of others.

"I'm totally consumed with what we need to do and what we're going to do.

"I know we've got two very tough fixtures but we have to look forward to them and do everything we can to make sure we get the right results in both of them."

For the best West Brom v Saints previews, don't miss tomorrow's Daily Echo.

to be fair , we havent lost when we've played this season on sky. we beat burnley 3-2 away and cardiff 1-0 at home so lets go for the hat trick shall we. We will have such a better idea of where we are at 10pm tonight. Until then lets keep the faith!!

3 2 away at Burnley last September. We're due another one!

Can't make tonights game but if the atmosphere is half as good as it was at Charlton, we'll have a fighting chance.

Saga should not be in the team, believe me. Saw him in the reserves in the week and he was shocking he couldnt trap a wet bag of cement and missed a few easy chances. BWP is quicker and looks sharper at the moment, what evidence do you have that makes you want to put him in the team? I would also like to see dyer back in, scaring defenders with his pace, as we know WBA cant defend. COYY!

I will be there tonight and I would like to see NP make a bold statement for the future. Now is the time to put our best team out. Dyer and Hammill down the flanks with BWP up front and Stern scoring it will be a very attacking line up. Safri and Viafara in the middle will be strong. Would like to see Vignal at left back with Ostlund at right back. 2 full backs who know how to defend. Keep Wright in goal and Lucketti and Perry at the back and we can win. Surman, Saga, Euell and Thomas on the bench. Going down is not an option. Its time the players took responsibility and earned their pay. COYY Saint Forever

As usual there seem to be a lot of football experts watching Saints who seem to know nothing about football!? If he's fit and wanting to play, why avoid playing Idiakez!? He's without a doubt our best player and certainly the only one with enough class to come up with something clever to unlock the Baggies defence tonight. I was at Hillsboro earlier this season when we were spanked by Wednesday and could not believe that at least 5 of our players (including Jason Euell) were laughing and joking with the opposition after the final whistle!! You'd never see Idiakez doing that, like me it would seem he either has pride or he HATES losing and right now that is the passion we need! Come on Nigel let's stall those Baggies and put Weds and Leicester City back below us in the league! Come on you Saints!

What an unfair way to start a post Mike!
'You talk a good game but your record is crap like all the others before you'!
What you fail to mention is that successive managers have had a worse batch of players to select from than the manager they replaced!
For anyone that has the slightest knowledge of football, I would think it would be obvious that you cannot sell Premier League quality players, replace them with lesser quality players, and still have a quality, winning team!
Nigel Pearson took on the job of manager, when other, more experienced out of work managers, did not apply because they did not fancy the challenge!
Your manager deserves support, not criticism at this time, and a bit more understanding of the problems he faces that were not of his making!
It's easy to select a team on here, but if Nigel took your advice, and the team were slaughtered, it is Nigel that would have to face the press to explain what went wrong, and the abuse from 'customers' like yourself, on these posts, not YOU!

Are you Inigo's brother Ian?

No question he has good feet but my feeling is that he doesn't have the pace or physicality to cut it in Championship football. Having said that, would I rather Viafara (can't control a ball) or Euell (can't be bothered to control a ball)? No.

Going to be a difficult night. We need to be brave and go for it. I'm sure we have players who's egos tell them they are good enough for this level. They have to stand up and prove that.

Unfortunately we don't have any players with pace. BWP is quick but can't be bothered to run, chase or dribble. Dyer is quick but forgets to look where he's going.

I think we just pick the ones who have either got the skill (not much choice) or care enough (less choice). And we should also not pick on sentiment. Surman may be a Saints fan, but he has been very, very poor this season. Bit like having a Saints fan as Chairman - looks like a god idea, but has got us in more trouble than it's worth.

Having said all that I think the best team without any doubt will be the one Pearson picks - because that is the one that has to get three points tonight whatever we say. Next season, which ever division, we can at least look forward to players who are fit (even if they still can't play football) with Hoddle back in charge.

Good afternoon Sam. What you say is right, Pearson does need our support (I for one will be there tonight to see my return on £2 on us winning 2-0 at 35-1!!). However, I can well understand Mikes point. Pearson might well have to make a few different decisions tonight, unpopular or not-depending on which way you look at it.

May i suggest your thoughts and efforts could be put into better use at Fratton judging by Redknapps comments on MOTD last night,"lack of atmosphere", "dead" and "I hoped we would be better supported with a cup final around the corner" were mentioned by the supremo unless I'm very much mistaken.....

By the way, I thought Defoe looked sharp yesterday and should be amongst the top scorers next season- I just hope he changes boot colour, yellow doesn't suit him!

Of course Pearson will have to take decisions, some unpopular - that's what he's paid to do!
Let's face it, with the squad he has inherited, there is not a lot of juggling that he can do! The quality player has long gone! He has to make the best of a bad job, that was not of his making! He's got it tough, and deserves support, not constant criticism about selection, lack of experience etc etc.

Did not see MOTD! I was not aware that the crowd were any less vocal than usual. I do think that, despite what is said by Harry and Tony, the players have their minds on Wembley more than on the league games. After the weekend's results, maybe that's the best thing! Don't get injured!
Yes! Defoe does look good, and only wish that Benjani was still here to work alongside him, because Baros has, in my opinion, failed to deliver, and think that his loan deal will not be turned into a contract offer when the season ends.

I hope all goes well for you tonight!

It's going to be a tough one!

Couldn't have put it better myself,if we had anyone half decent we have sold them, most of us are behind Nigel, he has had to do the impossible,I like the passion he has for the team,he,s always on the touchline shouting , COYR

Good Luck!
Cheers Sam, I might even share my winnings with you.............. Oh,and Redknapp really did say that, he looked thoroughly bemused.
I had no doubts about your honesty on what Harry said, but have considerable doubts that you would consider sharing your winnings!
I hope you collect!

Sheffield Wednesday - but unfortunately they didn't get any points deducted in the end because they only actually PLAYED 5 out of their 6 loan players in that particular match (Typical)!
