STERN John scored twice and was sent off as Saints secured their Championship status in dramatic style at St Mary's today.
There were scenes of celebration as Saints stayed up - and sent Leicester down instead - by beating Sheffield United 3-2, only their fourth league win in 25 games.
But Saints had to come from behind before claiming the win which sees them avoid a drop into the third tier of English football.
Marek Saganowski levelled just before half-time with his first goal since September, and John fired Saints in front in the second period.
Saints were back in the drop zone when United sub Jon Stead levelld on 65 minutes, only for John to net his 20th league goal of the season four minutes later.
John was dismissed 10 minutes from time for his second bookable offence - a foul, having been cautioned the first time for celebrating his opening goal.

Went to St Marys after meeting the Sheffield lads. Sat with the boys from both sides in the town for a few jars. Had highs and lows throughout the game. I love Sheffield but all the boys are in agreement that you made it like a cup final. No sad nasty stuff like that shower of s__t down the road. Just good old fashion banter and a beer. You certainly deserved it, and no real disappointment here as like cliche goes, football was the winner. Richie.

All I can say is that but for Leon Crouch and Laurie M bringing in Nigel Pearson, we were doomed.Lowe and Wilde are the beneficiaries of this excellent choice of a Manager. Had we been relegated as almost certainly would have happened but for Nigel Pearson achieving the following: 1. Generating motivation and belief amongst the squad. 2. Improving the fitness levels 3.Gaining the respect for fairness ,something Burley did not have. Players such as Vignal and Licka were totally ignored by Burley and both made a contribution and Euell and Wright were the heroes after both had been booed by their own fans for several weeks. This is what can be described as getting the best out of your players knowing what they are really capable of. 4.Nigel Pearson also brought in Wright(What a fantastic goalie), Perry and Lucketti all of whom played a big part . All I can say is that realistically Lowe/Wilde have the support of no more than 30% of the fans while Nigel Pearson has 90% of the fans behind him. On this basis , if Rupert Lowe wants to improve his popularity then I think he would be very prudent to continue with Nigel Pearson, who has done more than enough to make the job his. Its so sad that the Boardroom is where all the problems are and the power struggle that we have witnessed is disrupting the progress that Nigel Pearson has accomplished in starting to rebuild our club. Please Mr Lowe /Mr Wilde allow Nigel Pearson to continue to accomplish as we were doomed to relegation when he came aboard and he is the prime reason we\'re still in the Championship.

He also had a fit vignal and andrew davies and had two fit keepers for his reign and didn't have to recall the third choice from torquay and play him like Pearson did. With a fully fit squad and a bit of investment Pearson will make us a fighting force in the championship.

The big crowd you had this weekend was because everyone was expecting it to be a funeral, and even with a win, it would have been if others had won! You had to rely on others to keep your position! So you think that Saints will not slide down the leagues, as Pompey once did! Let me remind you that, this time last year you were play off material, at the opposite end of the table to what you ended this season! Your loan players will now return to the clubs that hold their registration! What does that leave you with? Optimism? I doubt it! How much money do you think that Pearson will have to spend when the transfer window opens? I bet it is a few bob short of what Harry has to spend! IF (R) IF Pearson has money to spend, do you think it will be enough to bring in better players than the ones that have nearly got you relegated? With the boardroom problems, and the posts on these pages showing a lack of unity among fans, what players do you think would want to come and join such a club? Enjoy your relief at having avoided relegation, but the battle recommences next August! Incidentally, I am pleased to see that you admit that Pompey is THE BIGGEST CLUB SOUTH OF LONDON!HAPPY CHAPPY wrote:Yes and proper fans do not smash their own city to bits, now do they six-fingers. Proper fans, dont make me laugh. Proper fans dont hit other fans over the head with hammers and give them brain damage. You STAINS though didn't you ANDY PI55 ! or would you rather just forget about that one like I sad before their are some evil STAINS supporters, and you will never get rid of that tarnish !
Yes and proper fans do not smash their own city to bits, now do they six-fingers. That HURT with another HUGE bitter-pill swallowed again today gives us Saints so much satisfaction. Unlike pompey,THE BIGGEST CLUB SOUTH OF LONDON,will not slide down the leagues and stay there for half a century. !

What a laugh, what a laugh!Andy P wrote:Have you any news on the current condition of the Manchester United Supporter who was attacked by your fans outside 'Saint's Fans Pub' a few years back? Incidentally, I am pleased to see that you admit that Pompey is THE BIGGEST CLUB SOUTH OF LONDON! Best supported team in the South - nearly 32000 fans. What is Fratton's highest attendance? - please advise 657 or Sam

Thanks again , it was great having you here.
