Nigel Pearson believes Saints must start planning for the future rather than get too carried away with celebrating their final day survival.
The Saints boss was typically down to earth and matter of fact with his views just moments after leaving the pitch at St Mary's having been surrounded by well wishers after he guided the team to Championship safety.
For Pearson, who was brought in back in February, keeping Saints up is a major achievement as it was his mission from day one - even though the club were six points above the drop zone when he arrived.
But he acknowledges that for the club as a whole, escaping relegation from the Championship on the final day is not something that should be treated as particularly terrific.
To avoid that happening again, Pearson believes the club need to start their planning soon.
He said: "All in all I'm delighted but I'm not going to kid myself because it's a situation we'd rather not be in as a club.
"If you'd have looked the start of the year you wouldn't have said it would be an achievement to stay up.
"That needs to be addressed because it is now.
"When the dust settles after the game we have to look at how we move the club forward."
