Pearson planning for next season

Nigel Pearson is targeting a greater consistency from his team if he is Saints boss next season.

Pearson is continuing with his planning for next season despite not being sure whether he will be retained as manager by the new incoming board - either led by Michael Wilde or Rupert Lowe - or potential investors.

The Saints players have been at Staplewood this week for end of season fitness checks and have been sent off on their summer holidays with strict plans to adhere to.

They will all be required to check back in during their time off for further tests to ensure that when they reconvene for pre-season training everybody is in good shape.

Pearson is also drawing up ideas of what positions he would like to make additions in during the summer.

That's despite the fact that he is clearly not able to make any moves yet with an EGM scheduled for next week that leaves his future - and the playing budget of the club - in question.

However, he remains focussed on the task ahead and is certain that if he is still there next season he can ensure the club won't be scrapping to stay in the Championship again.

He said: "I do believe we can be better.

"If people know what's expected of them and starting afresh, we can make sure of that.

Although there are better qualified Managers i would like to see NP given a fair crack at the helm. From what i can see he is a motivator and has the players respect and they want to play for him. If there is any budget next season for new players i have every faith in NP bringing in the right player his loan signings this year have been in my eyes spot on

Demanding better levels of fitness, dedication and looking where to strengthen...why would any chairman want to get rid of a manager who whats to deliver this.

It is only Crouch who is suggesting that Pearson will be sacked and paper talk lets wait and see what happens next week with regard to new management.

Wigley,Gray, sorry rupert looks like Leon has had success in placing a coach in the managers position..something you failed at. NP needs a chance to show what he can do by bringing in his own type of players.first to make us a good championship team, then second to push for promotion which is every managers goal.

PEARSON is OK not great

Took us in to the relegation position where we would have stayed if Richard Wright had not made a crucial save.

Lucky Davis got injured as well as Bart otherwise we would probably be in Division 1.

Sheff Utd QPR Crystal Palace and Preston all improved significantly with new managers CrouchHone should have sacked Burley in the Autumn

How do you know he is not great?! He inherited Burley's poor, unfit, poorly motivated team, with two of the best players just left on loan, caretaker managers further decline, with the window shut, no funds, boardroom chaos. He instilled fitness, motivation, discipline and sorted out the defence which Burley never did.

Did you see our performance at West Brom? Did you see NP? I guess not

Stop moaning about what nearly happened: it didnt. Give the guy a chance

Three wins out of thirteen games tells me is not great at the moment he may well become a great manager only time will tell.

At the moment I think he is not great and not bad just OK I am not suggesting that I would not sack him but I would have sacked Burley in the Autumn for the reasons which you have noted.

I was getting a lot of Flak when I suggested Burley was not up to the Job in the Autumn.

Lowe had a decent record of employing good managers Strachan, Hoddle, Burley etc, the problem was keeping them.

The problems really started after Burley left and Crouch didn't replace him quick enough. Give Pearson until at least xmas and see where we are then.

Let us assume that Nige is an assiduous reader of this column. As Saints fans we should be giving him a clear message. We can only SUPPORT him or REJECT him - there is no other choice. Innow, I know statement of the bleeding obviouse.

However, it was obvious watching him that he was giving 110% - at least when I looked at the passion in the man.

Compare that with George who looked tired, and imo just not wanting to be there in many, many matches. (It was the punch drunk look that gave it away for me - like a boxer who had just taken a beating)
Give Nigel a chance, support him with enthusiasm, admire his passion, trust in what he has done so far and see what happens.

Frankly , we are at the bottom and can only improve.

Management in the Championship is a toughie and I think he's the one for us

Exactly. If he can shed some of the deadwood, bring in a few of his own choices and keep them all fit and motivated, I can't see why he can't take us back to the Promised Land before it is all too late.
Nothing to lose by giving him another rolling contract - it's an easy get-out if we have to......

That has been our downfall, all the clubs relegated from the premiership have changed manager 3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 times.

My concern is the deafening silence from the Wilde/Lowe camp. If they are concerned about giving NP the chance to plan for the new season, why don't they just come out and say they support him and he will be manager once they take over, which they surely will, bar a miracle takeover.

My fear is that they will bring in a new man, simply because NP was Leon's man and not based upon any footballing reasons....leading to yet more upheaval.

NP has made a promising start, has the support of the majority of fans and I hope he is given every chance.

After looking at the fixtures that Pearson actually managed, 13 in all, starting from Scunthorpe away. All I can say is that 12 of them teams, when we played them were either fighting to stay in the league or fighting to get promoted. So in my eyes to get 16 points, secure some great signings, never steer away from the truth and to keep us up was a great achievement.

He at least looks as though he cares, and where he is new to the management scene he has a good driving force and high ambitions which I can only see as good.

So for all of that and the fact that Pearson chooses players in at least their right side, if not their correct position, I will continue to support him.

So Lowe I have supported you in the past, don't let yet another fan turn their back on you and make sure Pearson is our manager next season!

With the way the CCC worked out, virtually every team had something to play for all season. Even on the last day, there were 4 that could go down with Colchester and Scunny, 3 that could win or be promoted, and in total approx 10 that had a chance to get into the play-offs.

Had we turned just 6 of those 10 draws and 3 losses into wins, we would have been in the play-offs ourselves. Or if there was less dithering around the replacement of GB.

I agree completely about the passion, honesty and commitment. But I am not yet convinced there is enough there to get us back to what we have been used to.

Why can't SAINTS Supporters see it is Crouch who is causing the delay, he will hang on until the bitter end. There is no need for this EGM. The current board have lost the confidence of the majority of the owners of the shares and should resign. NP can do no planning whilst Crouch is there.

I agree with Grim Reaper, give Pearson a chance. John B, the reason probably why Burley was not sacked is that Burley would have had a massive penalty clause in his contract that would have cost Saints FC a lot of money to say 'Bye Bye'!This is the same clause, as per all the other managers Lowe has said the same to over the last 10 years of his chairmanship! This and supporting other loss making divisions of Southampton Leisure and dividends for the shareholders, all part of being a PLC is our main problem! I have also been a dissapointed fan with the performances on the pitch, but what we saw on Sunday was the Fans getting behind the team, even when we were behind and not turning on them, as I and many have been guilty of numerous times this season. I'n not making excuses for some of the players performances,. because let's face it, they have just not been good enough and our position in the league table said it all!
