Saints still silent over who leaves

Saints are not planning to release their retained list until next week at the earliest.

The club had to submit to the Football League a list of those out-of-contract players they were planning to keep or release by May 16, just after Rupert Lowe and Michael Wilde returned to power at St Mary's.

That deadline was met but the list has not been made public.

That is set to remain the case until next week or possibly even the week after as Saints remain in negotiations with some of their out-of-contract players over potential new deals to keep them at the club.

There are nine players out of contract this summer.

Claus Lundekvam and Chris Makin have retired, leaving question marks over seven others.

They are Mario Licka, Darren Powell, Nathan Dyer, Alexander Ostlund, Simon Gillett, Inigo Idiakez and Jermaine Wright.

June is a notoriously difficult month to get things done as most of the football world is either at major championships or on holiday.

All the contracts of the players concerned run until the end of this month and, while all players with contracts due to expire are able to sign pre-contract agreements elsewhere from January, none of the Saints players have.

Lowe and Wilde made the decision to keep the list under wraps because they didn't want to publicly alert other clubs to negotiations ongoing or to the availability of players they may wish to retain.

The decisions were all put on hold while they sorted out the managerial situation.

Nigel Pearson had his own ideas on what should be done but that is now up to Jan Poortvliet and his team. Poortvliet will not have seen much of any of the players on the list and so will be relying on the advice of coaches Stewart Henderson and David Hockaday to guide him.

There are some positions where there are options and it will be up to the new management team to decide whether they have sufficient cover to manage or need to retain the services of an out-of-contract player as cover.

Saints will try wherever possible to push through their young players into the first team.

However, they have also stated they realise the need for some experience as well and, while the young players are a cheaper option and part of the ultimate masterplan at St Mary's, they need to be ready for first team action before they can be thrown in.

Henderson and Hockaday's knowledge of these youngsters will therefore be vital in the decision-making process, which is expected to wind up in an announcement next week or the week after before the deals expire at the end of the month.

Hahaha, unbelievable...Sven Goran Erikson(now in Mexico)turned down a big chance to be the manager at SMS next season. Hasse Backe his assistant said to Swedish newspaper that there was five clubs involved- one of them were Saints. How would anyone think that he would come to Saints right now?...Rupert?

Will we even see the list? The season finished 5 1/2 weeks ago, and even allowing for the time taken for Messrs Lowe & wilde to settle in to their offices, they've had long enough to get negotiations done. They'll know which players thay don't want to keep, and concentrate on the players they DO want to keep.
How many of the 7 are at a 'Major tournament'? (unless they've bought tickets)Anyway, it should be the agents that the club speak to . The agents should settle the deal then get the final nod or shake of the head from the player.

Out of the players mentioned..Mario Licka, Darren Powell, Nathan Dyer, Alexander Ostlund, Simon Gillett, Inigo Idiakez and Jermaine Wright...im only really hopeful we keep Licka and Idiakez and maybe Dyer as he's the kind of young talent the new coaches need to work on.

The echo is desperate for news they have started to take stuff from the The Saints Forever forum

I think that forum has a case against the echo for plagirism.

perhaps the echo could also cut costs by just using the TSF for accurate saints related stories!!!

I understood from TSF that Powell and Idiakes is on the list of players looking for employment, Also if the TSF is to belived Ostlund and Licka have already left.

Apparently Inigo, Darren Powell and Ostlund are three of the ones leaving.

I think that's a result, don't think Ostlund has ever done anything notable, apart from look a bit piratey.

That's what the Star says so it must be true...

I think we will keep Wright as experienced cover and sign Gillett and Dyer as they are young and will know now they have the best chance of first team football with Saints.
I have no grumbles with the other playes leaving...they weren't that good last season and with Licka we have enough talented youngsters who are as good as him!

I just hope that we can get a decent goal keeper in because there's no way Poke is ready and Davis is a reliability. With a decent keeper at the back I would say the team will have a chance of staving off relegation once again! Can't wait!

So the retained list was returned to the football league by May 16th.
Question - Does anybody else remember reading autobiographies and/or interviews by managers in which they clearly said "as soon as the season ended they would look forward to receiving the list of players being released, so they could plan who to bring in for the next season"?
Assuming this practice still occurs is it not feasible that all the other clubs may already know which players we are releasing?
Unless the football league are still sitting on it.
Be interested to know if this is still the procedure or if it has changed and when the list is issued.

You must be blind mate! Wright started badly last season because he was coming back from injury and wasn't match fit, but came good when he returned, he should be one of first players we give a contact to. Don't be a sheep have your own mind Wright is a solid performer.

I am stunned. Complete stunned that anyone would defend such a player. He’s a journeyman. Gets the ball and immediately gives it to someone else. No positive contribution to the team. I have a season ticket and feel cheated every time I see his name on the team sheet. He was just George's drinking buddy. He was at fault for all three goals against QPR. Then went on to play consecutive 90 minute games and score an own goal to put us out of the cup. Might sound harsh, Euel and Wright-Phillips are just as bad, but I’m staggered to see him play week in, week out. We have the promise of playing effective football with hungry players next season. However when a fan defends someone who epitomizes all that is wrong with our team, then we might as well throw the towel in. Really is beyond sanity.

Lundekvam & Makin have retired & If rumours are true & Powell, Ostlund & Vignal & possibly Wright are gone/or going... Who do we actually have in defenece? Even with the youth it doesn't leave much room for injury. We need to bring in at least 2 new defenders, a GK & a striker & we might actually have a good season.

By the way, does anyone know what's going on with Rasiak? Are we selling him or is he coming back?

I don’t know what you where watching last seasons. Wright started badly got a bit better and leveled of.

He played reasonably well against seriously substandard opposition and that was the height of his achievements.

A fit Ostlund would run rings around him. But i wouldnt want to trust on the return to fitness of a scandanavian defender again.

The truth is we haven’t got any other right backs at the club but neither of them are good enough.

I would however be surprised if Wright does leave. He is equally bad wherever he plays and that means good value to RL

If Wright were to become a SFC player, it would be the best news in a lot time. I'd heard WBA were interetsed along with other clubs. KD must be on good money, having cost 2 million.
