SAINTS have completed the signing of Strasbourg's France Under-19 international Morgan Schneiderlin.

The 18-year-old had a medical this morning and put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

Depending on appearances, the fee for Schneiderlin could rise to as much as 1.5 million euros, which equates to just under £1.2m.

Schneiderlin was reported to have been the subject of interest from Portsmouth and other clubs in England and Europe, but opted to join head coach Jan Poortvliet at Saints.

For Schneiderlin's reaction to signing for Saints, don't miss tomorrow's Daily Echo.

Southampton = Portsmouth Feeder Club

Southampton cannot afford him, Sasha is paying and he will come 'home' once hes got a few lower league games under his belt. Sending our young players to lower league teams can work wonders. Ask Beckham

From the sound of things i've read on the web it's not down to how much is offered for him but where he wants to go. The rumor is he wants to come to us because he will get games rather than warming the bench at Portsmouth.

I agree its looking pretty crowded in the midfield what with safri, gillett, viafara, surman, dyer, euell, idiakez, licka, lallana, even wright, indicating that they'll be some departures. I thought we lacked a defensive midfielder last year after pele had done a reasonably good job, so im glad this problem is being addressed. Still I think we're lacking a bit of pace and width, so fullbacks -as you point out- would be a place to strengthen.

This is why he's choosen saints, cos he will get games & cos we have a good record of delevoping young players. I feel optimistic about the new management & the structure at the club. Those who perform well will get games, whether they're 16 or 36, simple. I just hope we keep hold of surman, safri, davies, viafara, john, if we do I think we'll be looking at a play off place. Arsenal and Chelsea were after him last year...he's played for France at all youth ages and captained the Under 18s against England recently.

We may not be spending alot of money, yet these new signings at least show the club is looking to show a brave face to the new season. I still think we have the basis of a good squad. under Burley the problem appeared to be application and motivation. Which didn't appear a problem for Niger. let's hope these new boys can get the best from our players. I still didn't see the Burley logic of having a player who scored a goal on average every 1.5 games, then stuck him on the bench for months at a time. two seasons running. I doubt Rasiak will stay. Which I think would be a shame, he might not be the greatest worker, but even hanging upfield means you have to keep two player marking him

Saints have beaten off competition from a string of top clubs to sign hot French prospect Morgan Schneiderlin.
The 18-year-old was yesterday reported to be heading for Fratton Park in a £1.2m deal from RC Strasbourg.

But the highly-rated midfielder opted instead for Southampton because he knows he will get more regular first-team football.

He has signed a four-year contract for a fee which could rise to 1.5m Euros.
It is a major coup for Saints with Arsenal and Chelsea also reported to have been tracking the talented set-piece specialist.

He watched training this morning and was impressed by the quality of the club's youngsters. He then completed a medical and has put pen to paper in the last few minutes.

Schneiderlin, who captained the French Under 18 side, has found his opportunities limited at Strasbourg making three top-flight appearances last season and now he is looking to fully establish himself at senior level.
That played a key factor in his decision to sign for Southampton who have pledged to give youth a chance this term.

He said: "I am delighted to be signing for Southampton. It is a very good club and one where I know I will get a chance to play.

"That is the most important thing for me right now. There were other clubs interested in me but I know Southampton have a good track record for bringing through youngsters.

"I know a bit about them from their time in the Premier League and I have heard a lot about the Academy particularly with the likes of Theo Walcott coming through.

"That was a big factor in my decision along with the return of Rupert Lowe because I have heard a lot about him and I know he is a big believer in the Academy and promoting young players.

"Here you do not have to wait until a certain age in order to play. If you are good enough then you will play and that is important to me.

"It is more important than money or prestige. Right now I need to develop my career and I believe I can do that at Southampton."

Saints chairman Rupert Lowe moved swiftly to head off rival interest and was delighted to have tied up the deal.
He said: "I am absolutely thrilled we have managed to get him. There was a lot of strong competition and I am delighted we have won the race for such a talented player.

"He was persuaded to come here because of the structure we have in place and the fact he knows he will get a chance to play here.
"He is a defensive midfielder who can also play a more attacking role. He is a top quality player who is capable of scoring goals out of nothing and he will be a very good acquisition who will fit right in with what we are aiming to achieve."

I'm not sure I get it with Surman. Pretty much every post that mentions his name seems to put him in the same league as, say, Bridge or Bale.

I accept he's a fan, but that doesn't make him a player. Unless I'm missing something he had a truly dreadful season last year. We know he's not quick, but for most of last season he seemed to blame everyone else for every (too many) mis-placed pass, and it was like pushing on an open door for any team coming down our left flank.

Would we be that bothered if a decent offer came in given the current circumstances.

As with Bridge, if we an get more than he is actually worth, it may be a no-brainer to let him go.

Another positive signing!

I know the return of RP & MW has caused, putting it midly, emotional debate.
let's be honest what do all saints fan care about?

The team doing well and winning games!

I know there's a real split among fans, pro and anti lowe fans but its the team that matters and needs our support.

True, the lack of communication from the club is extremely frustrating and as fan we should know whats going on. Afterall we provide a good source of regular income to the club i.e. tickets, replica kits etc

Being more open about the finacial situation would of been a good start. Most of us have to deal with our own finances and know the reality of life, if your spending more than you have, cuts have to be made.

Sad to see that parts of the stadiums being shut but if we're honest been a while since we've filled it on a regular basis, so make sense, cuts cost on stewarding etc.
Hopefully they'll play how we all know they can play and we can start packing SMS again.

Its the team that matters not RP or MW

Although we still do not know who is being retained from last year, the signings to date have been excellent. Two experienced proven battlers and two potential gems with excellent pedigreee. I wish people would stop being so negative, unless of course they have absoultely no relationship to either The Southampton Area or it's football club!! I sense that the balanced view of genuine Saints supporters is one of cautious optimism, which I share. If we keep hold of Davies (centre half), Saffri, Surman and Rasiac or Stern John, and probaly bring in a left back and a goalkeeper, then "bring it on". Saints Forever.
p.s. Can't the moaners post onto the weather of political site in stead of this one??

You're both right of course and that's the tragedy.

He might be brilliant. He might not.

I prefer to go with "RED ARMY" because I am an optimist and, in an ideal World I would much rather that Dangerous Mike kept his negative views in check. A democracy is just that. You can say what you **** well like - just as long as it aint just plain nasty (I would suggest)

Mind you, I love the idea of a bit of braised badger washed down by Unicorn tears.

Next time I'm having lunch with Uncle Woopert in his castle I'm going to try some of that.

You know that the now-mythical "retained list" is ONLY FOR PLAYERS OUT OF CONTRACT. That's six players, most of whom we wouldn't be that bothered to be losing, I imagine.

We'll find out about other transfer deals as they happen, like any other year and any other club.

This is a great signing. I just hope he's not here to replace Surman, I heard a rumour he was off to Tottenham. I really hope not. I'm looking forward to next season if we've got a squad of hungry kids guided by a few old unbitter men.

I admit he is naive at times and gives the ball away with a careless pass but he has a spark where he can create something and as he is a fan, he cares. That's one of the reasons I believe Gerrard is so good for Liverpool. He's a fan and cares that his side is losing. But in general many of our players, throughout the whole midfield were an open gateway last season. However I think the kid is really starting to develop. Us fans have seen so many youngsters get in the first team and then are sold or let go. Teams like Man U, Liverpool have seen groups of good youngsters come through at the same time and that has made them into great teams. (not just that mind you). But say Beckham, Giggs, Ginger nut, all came through the ranks around the same time. You can't buy that. Well we can't. Nathan Dyer, Surman, Bale, Walcott and a few others. That's not a bad team. In experienced but you mix some concrete old experience players in there and you've got yourself an exciting team which is growing and developing and getting stronger each match. That's the way Arsenal do it. But I agree he's not a the best midfielder we have.

RedArmy, most of the postings on here nowadays are from skates pretending to be SFC fans. You think they would be posting on their own site still revelling in their FA Cup success and bigging up old saggy chops but obviously not. Any Saints fans worth their salt would be looking forward to next season regardless of their views of the current board. Personally I am not a great fan of RL but I am of Saints. Lowe put a lot of effort into Saints getting the new stadium but he then messed up by meddling with team matters etc, he has now returned and all we can do is hope he has learned from his mistakes and he helps take this club forward and back to where it belongs, in the Prem. The so-called experts say you have to play a certain way to get out of the CCC, I say boll@cks, the 3 teams promoted all played different styles last season and also, I remember some 'experts' once commented on Fergies young Man U squad saying "you wont win anything with kids" nuff said!

To the best of my knowledge, there are no plans to close any stands at Fratton Park for the coming season.
If Fratton Park had the same capacity that St Mary's Stadium does, then you can rest assured that attendances would equal, or even better than Saints managed during their spell in the Premier League.
When there were terraces, Pompey's highest gate was 51,000+ and the population is larger now, and travel is easier.
With regard your claim that Pompey fans are now going to watch Havant & Waterlooville, I guess that many of them do - when Pompey are playing away. They switch from Hampshire's No1 team to Hampshire's No2 team.
According to recent posts on here, a number of Saints customers are intending to watch Eastleigh.

Hi Graham. I trust that I am included in the few that make the occasional intelligent comment.
Martin should realise that he appears to have 'tunnel vision' as far as football is concerned. Although a Pompey fan, I take an interest in other clubs, especially Hampshire ones (and ex-Hampshire eg Bournemouth).
There would be no football if there were no opposition to play agains, so naturally, I take an interest.
Like you, I find the negative comments from Saints supporters about SFC and the occasional Pompey fan who is all 'doom and glook'. Depression may not be an infectious disease, but it is catching!
I hope the new lad performs well, for two reasons.
1. It should improve your league position next season and
2. If he is sold, then your club should make a profit, AND HOPEFULLY USE THE MONEY WISELY.

All the best for next season.

I'll be watching (from afar)!

I'll be watching (from afar)!

well done morgan schneiderlin! a footballer thinking with his head rather than his wallet!! yes chelsea, arsenal and portsmouth were tracking him and he chose to come to saints where he's gonna get more chance to play, so that he gives himself more of a chance to reach his potential, especially working with the club that has one of, if not THE best youth set up in the u.k. what a smart lad!
still it is a very interesting signing for saints and defintely a morale booster having such a highly rated youngster sign up.
but i would like to know where the money came from for him? even if the fee rises to £1.2million i'm sure saints have had to pay something up front! i thought we were broke??

also i have noticed a few fans asking where he's gonna fit into the team as he is a defensive midfielder and we already have safri, viafara and now the new signing paul wotton able to play that role.but what i would say is that jan portvliet is probably gonna play a european formation in which we play maybe one up front with 2 holding midfielders which for me would explain signing another defensive midfielder. i think a 4-2-3-1 formation wouldnt be a bad guess as how saints will line up come pre-season.

oh, you mean that pikey, red-faced, bloated chav git who likes a bung and can't talk English properly and has a house in Sandbanks? No, I can't remember what he's called either.
I seem to remember that, a few years back, certain fans were singing 'Harry & Jim', and then trying to wind up the fans of their near neighbours by singing 'Where's your Harry gone - where's your Harry gone?' Now I wonder who they were. Any ideas?
I seem to remember half of Fratton Park calling Redcrapp a JUDAS, only last season. Still there not BITTER now are they, the FEW BLUE.
No, they are not bitter now, nor have they been. They believe in the old saying, 'forgive and forget', rather than some who, in ten and more years time, will still be blaming a succession of managers since the year 2000 and before, for the plight they still find themselves in.
No they are not bitter now,nor have they been. Your so right Spam, they welcomed Redcrapp back with open arms, thats why Fratton Park is always half empty, the other 6000 supporters watch Havant now. Because of Redcrapp returning, FACT!
As you think it cute to call me Spam, I was going to refer to you as Andy Pandy, a kiddies puppet, but refrained from doing so because I thought that it best that one of us does not revert to Yah Boo comments.

So what, in the days before TV, internet, cinema, Leisure centres, blah blah when their scummy populace probably couldn't play bingo either. My dad says they used to get crowds of 100s watching him in soton senior league, if the dell held 600000 they would prob'ly filled it in 1954

nah, c'mon, they're both ugly as sh#te - and equally cr#p as managers.
Sadly, Hull and Stoke will be such rubbish next year that only one of the pisspoor managers might make the drop.

This seems like a really promising signing, hopefully indicative of things to come.
In teh pre-season so far, we've signed some experience and now some young blood.
I was not feeling good about pre-season up until today, and to be afir we still don't know who'e leaving, but maybe we are back on theright track. The coming season we need to consolidate, (I could say we have an outside chance of the play-offs, but I'm drunk and I react violently to being slagged off, so I'll refrain), but I'm much happier now.
Lets hope these Dutch guys have a clue - I know I don't.

Absolutely Sam, absolutely. I don't want to ask any personal questions but I am intrigued at your interest in SFC. I might even say warmth.

I note that we are both Hampshire buffs but I wouldn't dream of going onto a Pompey site.

Does the Echo (Saints) site make you hoot with laughter or just groan inwardly at the endless stupidity of individuals.

I've only just started writing and am absolutely baffled at the negativity displayed although I understand that football fans must always have someone to blame and Lowe is perfect for SFC.

I find it frustrating that the abuse on the site is absurd as well as illogical. The endless comments about a certain person and his cronies taking money out of the Club and drawing a fee when he should really do it for love is so bizarre.

All the best to Pompey. Not sure where you go when you've had such a good season.

The trouble with the Premiership is that you really can't get anywhere unless "your man" is prepared to pile in an obscen amount of money to lift you those few extra places.

I ALWAYS track ex Saints players and I am hoping that Peter Crouch comes to Pompey. I loved him in a Saints shirt.

Enough of this nonsense - back to the real world. Shopping followed by a bit of gardening and then death (probably).

Who said writing on this site makes you depressed.

In answer to your question, I was born in the SO postal area, and went to The Dell before I even knew there was a Fratton Park. When I did eventually go to Fratton Park, and saw the two times League Div 1 champions in action, there was only one team I could support.

I do not hate Saints. Why should I? To have a foot ball match you need two teams, US and THEM. I would like to see THEM (SFC) in the Premier league so that they can be beaten bu US (PFC).
Does this site make me laugh or groan? Both. A minority have a great sense of humour, but the majority, while wanting positive action by their club, are extremely negative and divided. They don't like the chairman, manager, team and want money spent that the club has not got, something that got the club to it's current financial crisis.
Sorry you would not visit a Pompey site, but that is your problem. I like to check up on Saints, Bournemouth and Aldershot, in the vain hope that the 'centre of football' will head South, instead of being concentrated in London or North of Birmingham.
All the best

Wot a c&ck,why dont you never approach this site again,ok we`ve signed a few players that nobodies ever heard of to be honest, and our "head coach" has never seen play,by his own admittance, for me this is more signings than i thought we`d see, so good, but lets wait and see who they get to play along side before we start jumping through hoops, also do you really think we can really progress with a side made up of pubeless teenagers
