8:00am Tuesday 1st July 2008
Nathan Dyer has been banished from first team training as he stalls over a new Saints contract.
The 20-year-old winger saw his current deal officially end yesterday and so has reverted to a week-to-week contract.
Saints have made what they describe as "a very fair" contract offer to try and persuade Dyer to commit his future to the club. But he has so far refused to sign.
New head coach Jan Poortvliet has reacted by excluding Dyer from first team training UNLESS he agrees to accept the new deal which has been discussed over a period of months and remains on the table.
Poortvliet made the decision after speaking with Dyer and insisted he can only have players with total commitment in his first team squad.
He said: "Yesterday morning we talked with Nathan and said it was better for the group and for everyone if he didn't train with us unless he signs our contract.
"We are preparing the boys for the season and when you don't have a contract you can't prepare.
"We said he can sign or wait for another club but we need players who are happy to be here, who are involved with Southampton and who want to work at a level for them themselves and for their team.
"We need players whose hearts are in Southampton and only then we can achieve what we want to achieve."
Dyer is unlikely to receive much sympathy from Saints fans as the club offer to stand by him despite another date at Portsmouth Magistrates Court a week today in connection with burglary charges.
If he does opt to leave on a free transfer, then Saints will still be entitled to a compensation fee to recognise his development with them as he is under 24.
Dyer has been continually linked with a move to Portsmouth, where another ex-Saints academy player Martin Cranie went last summer after turning down a new contract.
Poortvliet has insisted the door is still open for Dyer to be a part of his plans - but he will have to sign his new contract to do that.
Saints' head coach believes Dyer would benefit for another year at St Mary's before any move to the Premeriship.
"It's a pity for a player who has spent all his life at a club and put in a lot of good work in the youth team and reserve teams," said Poortvliet.
"He needs to prove himself in the first team and then you can make that step forward.
"He can go somewhere else, which he has a right to do, but playing for Southampton if he has a great season then he will be ready for it.
"Nathan needs to play at least another year here to be ready to become a top player in the Premiership."
PLC chairman Rupert Lowe added: "Jan Poortvliet, Mark Wotte and I have all spoken to Nathan and we have offered him a very fair contract which he has so far declined and he is now on a week-to-week basis.
"It is still on the table and we have made it very clear we want to keep him. But we want complete commitment.
"That is the Dutch way and it is important and central to our plans to have commitment from the players."
Dyer was discovered and developed by Saints' satellite academy in Bath and was mentored by former coach Rod Ruddick, who is also now with Portsmouth.
Dyer made his Saints debut in 2005 - scoring on his debut under Harry Redknapp at Southend in a Carling Cup tie - and has gone on to make 61 appearances, scoring three goals.
However, last year Dyer had a major injury setback before the off field problems erupted.
Dyer's court appearance next week relates to an alleged theft from a staff room at Bar Bluu nightclub in Portsmouth.
Bradley Wright-Phillips has also been charged. The striker still has a year left on his Saints contract.
All Saints contracts expired yesterday but the club are STILL refusing to disclose the details of their retained list.
The futures of Jermaine Wright, Inigo Idiakez, Mario Licka, Darren Powell and Alex Ostlund are unclear None of those five were at Staplewood last Friday when a Daily Echo photographer was allowed in to take pictures of the training session.

Wish people would stop with the Lowe / Board bashing. I dislike the way Lowe has handled things all these year, as much as the next person. I have been vocal and in the written word for my dislike at his miss management and cr-p decisions like many, many others. But he is still here. This constant moaning about him hasn't and will not work, Mr Lowe is still here! And will be until the club is successful enough to attract a new investor. That way he gets the money he wants to leave. Let it go people, believe me you will be a lot happier. As for Dyer my opinion is he's let himself and family down, the fact he has brought shame on SFC is bye the bye. I hope he goes now, for all his footballing attributes, there will be another young man coming through or out there who wants the chance to prove themselves. Hasn't Man United let five quality young players go? No the young man has serious thinking to do to make himself and family proud again, if he can't see that Southampton F.C can help him with that then thats his choice. As a club we have to move on and not be distracted. I'm for one is happy with Jan's approach and willing to embrace his Dutch revolution, who knows Lowe might have actually got this one right? Wouldn't that be a turn up for the books? Hope we even get an Orange 3rd strip, it would brighten the gloomy winter away days.

Innocent until proven guilty. Such a shame so many of the above idiots don't understand what this means.
Nathan Dyer is one of the nicest and most level headed players at Saints. Always willing to attend Charity and community events on behalf of the club (much like Wright-Phillips) but then no-one is interested in that eh? And of course, all the above have never ever done a stupid thing when drunk in their life eh?

So, they haven't released the retained list, but you can work it out for yourself from the official site and the team section. Compared to a week ago, Ostlund, Powell, Idiakez and Licka have disappeared and the young 'keeper Pernecky is back in the under-18s. Glad Powell has gone - useless tosser - sorry Jermaine Wright has been kept on. Don't know aboutOstlund, but he never did much, likewise Idiakez. Licka would have been worth a punt, but if Surman and Skacel (wishful thinking?) combine down the left, he wasn't needed. There are bound to be more comings and goings before the season but it looks a well-balanced squad - and we can even afford to let that allegedly thieving, greedy disloyal little sh*te Dyer go and still have a good outfit. Suggest, to trim the 6 strikers down to 5 or even 4, they listen to offers for Rasiak (if he doesn't want to play) and definitely for Dyer's partner in crime, Plug, er, sorry, I mean Wright-Phillips.

Nathan is a lovely lad and I for one would like to see him in a SAINTS shirt next season. I am lucky enough to have met him and learned about him and his background. I met Shearer at a similar age and found them both well balanced lads. I did learn that Nathan has the same agent as Ashley Cole and I have always feared that this would not be in Southampton's interest. As for the off the field antics, I don't believe it and feel there must be an innocent explanation. Being charged does not mean you are guilty. I also doubt if they would have charged these players if they were not high profile. It is odd that in the time gone by Hampshire Police have been unable to identify the other three in the pictures, nor have they gone national by showing the pictures on Crime Watch. It is not a crime to look in a girls handbag, it might be a lark, but if unknown others steal, then you are in trouble. Guilty by association. Why did it take two weeks to involve the police? If Nathan is to leave then I wish him the best of luck for his future. I would love to see him as a success, not just for the lad but for Saints too, the more good lads we produce the more promising youngster will flock to our academy, and barring the multi millionaire, this is our only route back to Premiership in the long term. One word of advice for Nathan, what would your Grandma have said, maybe sack your agent, and make your own decision, don't let these money boys kick you around like a football.
