Saints release first teamers

8:00am Wednesday 2nd July 2008

comment Comments (78)   Have your say »

Saints have released five former first team players as they push on with Jan Poortvliet's St Mary's revolution.

Alexander Ostlund, Darren Powell, Mario Licka, Jermaine Wright and Inigo Idiakez have all been told they won't be offered extensions to their contracts which expired this week, while youngster Josh Dutton-Black has also been released.

Academy prospect Cedric Baseya has opted not to sign a new deal and has joined Lille in France to be nearer his home.

The long-awaited retained list was handed to the Football League back in May but with negotiations with Nathan Dyer ongoing Saints declined to make it public.

However, with those negotiations now concluded with an as yet unsigned offer remaining on the table and with contracts expiring at the end of June they have gone public.

Saints' PLC chairman Rupert Lowe said: "We thank them all and wish them well, we're very grateful for everything they've done for the club.

"I have personally called all of them to thank them although with holidays it's not been possible to actually speak to a few of them. I just wanted to thank them for their contribution and wish them well.

"The only reason for not making an announcement was that it wasn't in the club's commercial interest to put it into the public domain."

I guess we knew this was coming.....

We need consistant and determined players, most of which that are leaving do not fit into that mould, with maybe Wright as the only exception (But to be honest I never rated him).

It is a shame about Baseya, he looked promising.

You never knew what you were going to get from the oter players... Licka started to play well towards the end, Idiakez is often injured and probably highly paid, Powell is injured and inconsistant.... Ostlund is well... he is Jesus, I am not a beleiver!

John MacDonald, Southampton says...
8:19am Wed 2 Jul 08

Good luck to all the guys who are leaving. Cedric you mug! What an opportunity you have at Saints to get into the first squad and really show us what you've got - loser. Hope to see young Jamie White and Matt Paterson moved up the team sheet now - being local lads they will play for the shirt and give us grit and determination.

Ben Durutti, Shirley says...

Would have definitely liked to see Mario Licka get a new deal but the others are fair enough I think.

I feel sorry for Wright, he played a lot of games and I hope he finds another club soon. No doubt Ostlund, Licka and Idiakez will go back to their homelands. As for Powell he was a total sick-note and I'm amazed he was offered a contract extension by Burley. Only saw Baseya briefly, if he wasn't settled it was best to let him go.

Onwards and upwards as they say.

Tiger, Winchester says...
8:52am Wed 2 Jul 08

So that is 7 OOC, 2 retired and 4 loanees gone. That should save us a good £3M in wages and signing on fees. Lets ship out Dyer,BWP, Rasiak and Skacel, there's another £1M in wages plus transfer fees. Finally sign a couple of season long loanees, a RB and RM and away we go.
C'mon tou Saints.

Licka is the only one i reckon would have given a good season. But very pleased about Wright going! Lets bring on the new season. Glad some of the dead wood has gone. Lowe's comments translated - Give them the V. Still not a fan of his

hallelujah, finally we've had 'the list' what's the big deal about waiting so long No surprises at all. With 13 gone and 1 more soon, please please get Richard Wright back, he was the best between the sticks since Niemi and could be a commanding mature prescence for at least 5 years to help out kids.

Jackson Five, says...
9:57am Wed 2 Jul 08

Jermaine Wright always gave his all, which is all you can ask of any player. Wasn't his fault that a succession of managers picked him, so he must have been appreciated quite a lot behind the scenes. Good luck to him and to Ostlund, the rest contributed next to nothing, so no loss.

Do we have any right backs left in the squad now? Please tell me that Thomas isn't our first choice RB !!!!

Defence!, says...
10:01am Wed 2 Jul 08

According to the official site, Saints are now left with 4 defenders!!

Thomas, Perry, Davies and Lancashire.

Call me mad, but I think we may need more.

Why is it Lowe being quoted on this and not wilde, who is supposed to lead on the football side of things.
Lowe just cannot kep his smug face out of it.

Desperate, Southampton says...
10:15am Wed 2 Jul 08

Call me foolish but I am quite optimistic for the coming season.
My concern though is that pre season last year was a problem because we did not have a defence prepared and as a result we struggled early on (Saints 1 - Palace 4), which set the tone for the season.
With only 4 recognised defenders at present we are in danger of falling into this trap again.
Lets hope some quality defenders are purchased soon.

Super Legend Davs 74, woolston says...
10:17am Wed 2 Jul 08

No surprises, though i am too worried about our lack of defenders, this is what cost us last year. You could however count Surman at left back where in my opinion he is far more effective.

Viafara can play centre back too.

allsaintsnocurves, southampton says...
10:52am Wed 2 Jul 08

Well defence is looking a little thin but then that's nothing new with Saints. I hope Svenssson does make a remarkable comeback because he would surely help the team defensively whether or not he plays many games. Full backs are the area we need strengthening and goalkeeper. Maybe with the release of Rondos there is a new keeper coming!

BigRich1980, Cyprus says...
11:12am Wed 2 Jul 08

I think that Wright, Idiakez, Licka, Ostlund and Powell will not be missed and as pointed out above, probably that lot between them werre earning £20K per week in wages maybe a bit more. Shame about Baesya he looked like he had the potential to be lively, hopefully will get some reasonable compensation for him though.

Not seen much of Dutton Black, was he any good.

I must admit, looking at the profiles page we only have 4 Defenders and an abundance of midfielders, should we not be looking to strengthen our defence.

Robbie, Fareham says...
11:18am Wed 2 Jul 08

It's a lot of people to lose in one go. Bearing in mind that there are only 3 new faces (one had been on loan, so we've already seen him in the set up.) it's going to restrict options when it comes to injuries or lack of form. I just hope that it doesn't become a case that anyone who turns up with his boots gets a game. I hear that Richard Wright is still being sought by Ipswich, but the story seems to have gone a bit cold. It would be nice to see Batoz get a chance to show what he's got. As posted before, consistency would be his problem, but not as inconsistent as Kelvin....

If Svensson could make a comeback it would be great to see, but anyone who has been out as long as he has will need a long time to get back into things, and will be at risk of further injuring himself.

I think you are overlooking Mario Licka. He was left out in the cold by Burley. But under NP looked promising, linking up well especially Vignal

11:35am Wed 2 Jul 08

Let's face it, there are no surprises to discuss with regard to the five contracts not being renewed! It would be difficult, taking out any emotion, to put a case for any of them getting new terms. I am genuinely quietly confident regarding the squad and our prospects for improvement next season. I do expect at least one striker and maybe two midfielders to go out during the transfer window, with the candidates being obvious. Hopefully the current planning then calls for at least two full backs to be brought in. Let's not count our chickens regarding "Killers" comeback, but I for one would be "over the moon" even if he made the bench during the coming season. COYR and "good luck Killer".

Jamie, Thornhill, Southampton says...
11:42am Wed 2 Jul 08

I think this list is ok.

I would of liked to see Licka and Wright stay, but I knew it was unlikely.

Cedric going is a bit of a shock and this may mean that we will have to invest in another forward.

This has made our squad short in many areas, so it must mean that we will be signing a few more before the start of the season.

Although this message sounds a bit negative, I'm not. In fact I'm really looking forward to the new season because it seems so refreshing. I just think in order to do anything in the Championship we need to invest in a few more players.

Major Sir Jerry Pending, says...
11:58am Wed 2 Jul 08

No real surprises and no great losses really. The big question is which of the players still under contract will be sold or loaned out to save money - i.e. Rasiak, Skacel, Andrew Davis, Viafara??

Arthur, Soton says...
12:08pm Wed 2 Jul 08

The released players were as expected: I am happy to see Powell go, how many games has he played for us in the last two years? and even when he plays he seems a liability!! Wright didn't have a bad season, but we need a proper right back and his pace was a big weakness! Licka was a good player and I would have liked to see his stay, but I want to see Lee Holmes in action, and with Licka no longer around, he should get his chance. Ostlund again was a good player but we need someone who can last a season. Idiakes always got injured too, and the only thing he could do was set pieces, and I hear Wotton is quite good at those! Dutton-Black: well we never really saw too much of him, but I don't think he really made the step up to first team football! I hope Dyer goes:the little thief and I hope we get in a couple of defenders + Svensson returning (absolute Legend!)
Does anyone know whether A.Davies is back in full training??

J, London says...
12:09pm Wed 2 Jul 08

I don't think this leaves our squad "short in many areas". It's still too big - 12 midfielders and 6 forwards! BUT we have no fullbacks! Can't we get Vignal back on loan or sign him - he looked good at the end of last season - and we desparately need a right back.

J, London says...

Up to 4 of those likely to leave soon

7 with little or no first team experience

I'd say that in Perry, Davies, Thomas, Lancashire (and hopefully Killer) we have enough CB's. I worry about full backs but Surman played better at left back last season than he'd managed at Left Mid and Joseph Mills is a promising youngster who can play at Full Back.

Assuming we can't find some mugs to give us some money for Jhon then I think we could play him at Right back where his technical limitations will hopefully be less obvious (although I'd worry about him conceding a LOT of free kicks around the area).

In last year's annual report it said the club would recieve £5m from the Bale and Walcott sales in the summer of 2008.

Therefore I do not think we will have to sell any players inorder to pay off overdraft/debt etc. If any players are sold I think it will be with the intention to bring in other equally as good, or better, players.

With rumours that Telfer's coming back, I for one hope we offer him a one year contract, he's a hard worker & I believe at this level he could do a job for us. Hope we keep hold of A.Davies, Safri, Skacel, Rasiak (he's good for 20 goals), Viafara & Stern John. I've seen some people calling for the sale of Rasiak, but I don't think some people realise how many goals we would need to score to have a chance of getting promoted & Rasiak would be good for 15-20 goals.

Safri needs to be sold as he is now sharing his position with Schniderlin and Wotton, his wages are also very high. Viafara should probably go as well because he is also dead wood and I don't see a place for him on the team if we play 433.

I would like to keep Skacel, as a left winger, and Rasiak because both of the are very good and along with A. Davies and Stern John we wold have a very good team, aslong as they bring a good full back or 2 in.

Hopeflly Svensson will be ready for the start of the season. Him and Davies would be a brilliant combination. Along with Thomas and Perry as back up, because knowing our luck we'll need them. If Telfer comes back I thinkwe have a very good chance of promotion to be honest.

Also Holmes is apparently a very capable right winger. So I don't think Dyer is needed.

Bialkowski
Telfer, Davies, Svensson, Surman
Holmes, Schniederlin, Skacel
Lallana, John, Rasiak

Subs: Mcgoldrick, Saganowski, Gillet, Wotton, Thomas.

We don't really need a keeper on the bench, any ambitious attacking team should have as many attacking options as possible with maybe one defender.

If anyone bumps into Darren Powell they will probably get elbowed in the mouth and head-butted, during this exchange he will almost certainly injure himself and need six weeks rest.

Mills impressed me last season in the reserves as a left back who tackles hard, can head the ball and gets forward to put over decent crosses. Jamie Hatch at right back is very similar. I hope they're given a chance in the pre-season friendlies to see if they can step up to the first team. I think they could.

I’m a personally a bit disappointed that we are not giving Cedric a real chance. I think Lowe should have seen him play a bit before giving him the push. We will now be missing height up front in a big way. Maybe we will get someone else?

Ostlund is well though of in the Championship. I can see him being a bargain for someone but I cant really complain with the decision.

Wright, Powell, spot on.

Licka? Didn’t he still have a year on his contract? He is around 25 and was just beginning to perform for Saints. I think that it wont be long before it is made clear that we have made a bit of mistake here.

P.S when are we going to get a full back or 3 !!!

Incidentally, if any of you happen to bump into Darren Powell, can you advise him to return to Brentford? I know you lot know him as a disastrous sicknote, but he was brilliant for us, and we\'d love him back. I even named a goldfish after him.
Hi Iain, it's good to know i'm not the only ex Bee in Soton. I grew up in Boston Manor and moved here from Northolt recently. Darren Powell was a good player for Brentford and could do a great job in League 2. But my loyalty now lies with the Saints and VT, my local non league team. But i'll probably watch the Bees when they play at Bournemouth and i will always look out for their results.

Jock tw@t - seems like you have as much love for Scotland as Murray might for England's football team. Do you support Scotland when they are playing? I thoroughly doubt it, which makes you the same as Murray if he doesn't support england's football team. Many people don't but does it make them bad people? Moron!

The difference being, i don't look for support of the jocks!

He said he'd like to win the hearts of the English and take Henmans spot.

Saying he doesn't care who wins the football as long as it's not England wins no true English hearts. Only little glory boys like you!

Remember this, the Jocks the Micks and the Taffs, hate the English, that will never change.

You can support British sports all you want, but the 3 above will always detest the English.

I for one would not try and appease any of those 3 for support. Knowing the Enlish were behind me would be more than enough.

He's a Jock with a genuine dislike for the English and i'm glad he's out.

If he was the true Jock that spoke against England in the football, why hasn't he got the full support of his home country?

The nearest a jock will go to watch a home sportsman is Manchester, and look what the drunken sc%ms done to their town.

Tennis is a sport that jocks frown upon as it's a class thing that they truly delve in the depths of.

I'd support the French long before the 3 lowlifes above.

So why do you think Scots, Welsh & Irish dislike the English then? Could it be due to centuries of English economic & cultural domination of them in the "United Kingdom"?

Hey, brain dead, I've got Irish, Scots and English blood, was born in Southampton and would put it to you that most peope in the British Isles get on with each other pretty well - regardless of race, colour and religion. I suggest you are sick and that you seek the advice of your doctor on this issue.
What's this go to do with the Saints anyway?

The issue is English tw@ts looking for a wimbledon winner in a jock, that dislikes the English.

If anyone needs a check up from the neck up, it's so called fans (glory hunting ar6seholes), that are idiot enough to support someone that hates them, just so they can say "A Brit won Wimbledon".

Amir Khan is by far more English than Murray. He shows his love for England, and has never once been known to say he'd like "Any team but England to win" when we're playing another country in any sport.

I also have Mick and Jock blood in me, but i was born in Southampton. I am ENGLISH !

I feel nothing for my parents country. Lets face it, they ended up here in Southampton ENGLAND, so Scotland and Ireland can't be that good or they would have gone back!

It's time to dissolve the union, why should the Welsh and Scots get free prescriptions and uni places and then their MP's didn't allow it for the English!

Murray's a loser, glad he's out. Tennis is a crap sport anyway.

Sorry to see Baseya go; he would have been a key player when we finally come to our senses, ditch the Total Football and start playing Route 1.
I know I keep banging on about this, but short passing football has brought nothing but misery to Saints in recent years.

There is no 'retained list' only those released out of contract. Players have yet to be sold; Safri, Surman, Viafara, Saganoski, Rasiak, Skacel & probably Dyer.
That leaves us very weak and NO Full Backs !!
Will have to hope several youngsters step-up.
