Two wins from pre-season double-header for Saints

5:30pm Saturday 12th July 2008

SAINTS made it three pre-season wins from three with two victories against non-league opposition this afternoon.

Head coach Jan Poortvliet split his pool of players in half and sent one team to Basingstoke Town and the second to Winchester City.

And both secured comfortable victories, following on from the 4-0 win at Farnborough in Saints' pre-season opener on Tuesday night.

David McGoldrick inspired a Saints XI to a 5-2 victory at Basingstoke with a hat-trick.

Adam Lallana and Bradley Wright-Phillips also found the net.

While in the second game Michael Svensson made his long-awaited return to action in a Saints shirt after almost three years out.

The popular Swede came through 45 minutes unscathed as as Saints ran out 5-0 winners at Winchester.

Stern John, Oscar Gobern, Jason Euell (pen), Joseph Mills and Jamie White scored for Saints at The Denplan City Ground.

Before the detractors get in may I congratulate both squads for maintaining the 100% start to the season. Oscar Gobern looks a hot prospect.

No doubt Celtic will provide a stronger test on Friday but keep up the good work Saints.

Went to both games, thought the Basingstoke game was a better match. In the second half we showed some good movement and passing. Seeing Killer run out at Winchester was a day i didnt think i would see, so fingers crossed. Over the 2 games MOTM was Gillett for me. He ran the midfield as Basingstoke. Holmes looked like he came be a good signing. Thought Wotton looked very rusty, but hopefullly just needs some games under his belt. All in all cant really do beeter than 2 out of 2. But the real tests for the team with be over the next few weeks.

Yeah maybe it is 3 wins from 3 but we are playing teams 3 or 4 leagues below us we should beat them with score lines of 4-0 and 5-0, why cant we play teams who are high standards or same standards as saints surely that will give us a better idea where we stand for next season,

If we get any kind of result in the next three games I will be more than happy.

Its really hard to gage any sort of form when dealing with these kind of teams.

I am sure that Stoke will give us a great understanding of how we might fair in the coming season

Good, solid start with three wins so far.
Early days yet and WGS and Celtic will be a stronger test but there appears to be good spirit building within the squad with everyone working for each other - good to see.
Well done boys, keep it going for the next few weeks.

Were you saying that last season too after our laughable tour of Norway when we beat a mediocre team there 0-13 WE ALL know what a false dawn that produced, these 1st 3 games are pointless in terms of where we are as a squad as all the teams we played are if you pardon the pun "not in the same league" as us techincally, hence is very difficult to gauge how we are doing in real terms, as has been said the real tests will come against Celtic, West Ham and Stoke, just hope we have a few more defensive opitions by then as in both games especially the Basingstoke game we looked a bit shaky, good to see Killer back just hope he also holds out in the next 3 also if he plays.

Things arent looking good or bad. These games bear no relation to a competitive game. You can feel free to start praising the system in place now when January comes around. Until then keep watching the sky's!

Does fridays game against Celtic really count? Remember we will be having Le Tiss playing for part of the game and as good as he is he is an old crock now.

For me West Ham and Stoke will be the true test of how we are, Cheltenham could be tough as well along with Hereford.

Although I am optimistic I hope there is some money in the kitty to strengthen the team a bit if it is needed or we can get in some good loan signings.

Condor Man, Southampton says...

Interesting how Gillett is getting the plaudits at the moment, I hope he does make the step up as he's been loaned out (like Surman was) so has a reasonable level of experience.

If we can get away without signing too many players the trick is to have money at Christmas either to push on for the playoffs or stave off relegation.

Lowe and Wilde are getting there slowly but they still have a long way to go before I am fully convinced. I will know they have learned nothing if either of them appear on the team photo. I don't want to see them I want to see their handy work which hopefully will make this a better club. So I am happy if they stay in the shadows.

Also any idea when saga's due back? Not sure if the 4-2-1-2-1 can support so many straightout centre-forwards (both john and rasiak can be clinical but not known for their movement).

Are you saying all anti-Lowe people are knuckle draggers old chap. I certainly hope not. I am anti-Lowe, and was delighted that we managed to beat non-league opposition. Time will tell if we prove to be good enough to take on serious opposition. Please do not tar everyone with the same brush. We all have a right to our opinions, knuckle draggers or not. Pre-season matches only serve to show the manager what each player is capable of, raise a few bob for the clubs to cover costs, to raise the fitness levels after the summer break and to give the fans and manager, a chance to have a look at the new arrivals and how they fit in with the squad.
Whether you beat Celtic 10 - 0 or get beaten by the same score, you will still find yourself in the same position in the league when you kick off your first match in the league.
To much is read into pre-seasons. No club has won the league in pre-season matches.
RELAX! ENJOY!

Can anyone who has been to the games answer a couple of questions?

(1) What is this new formation like? And does it have any particular strengths/weaknesses
?

(2) Which players have particularly cought the eye/ looked bad?

And a question for anyone - Does the fact the J Viafara has not been included in any squad mean that he is on his way out?

I read a report the other day, but cannot remember where, that Viafara had gone AWOL, and had not returned for pre-season training. Not being 'close' to SFC, I cannot confirm this, and have not seen it reported in The Echo.
Perhaps the 'more enlightened' will have an up-date.

1, New formation looks good. Loads and loads of movement and although we've played lower league teams we look like an attacking team with goals in us.
2, For me over the 3 matchs (and I've been to all 3) definitely Gillet, he's been outstanding. McGoldrick is a killer in front of goal and Lallana is an outstanding prospect. OF the younger lads, Thomson must be in with a shout and young Paterson and Mills should be on the bench this season.

The majority of our 'squad' is now younger players. Maybe, just maybe we will thrive with their passion and determination. COYR

Sherbourne Saints in answer to your questions, but this is only my views and may differ from others.

1. Formation for me looked good for the first 20 minutes of the second half at Basingstoke. But lost it way in both games. It didn’t look like it came natural to the players. But I hope over the coming weeks, players will start to feel more comfortable with it. There's still alot of work to be done.

Players that showed promise for me. Well Gillett as I said before ran the midfield at Basingstoke. I was standing next to some BTFC fans, who agreed he looked our best player. Homles put some good crosses in, and will hopefully improve his fitness further over the coming games.

Can't really single out players that didn't do it for me. Strange to say, but watching Saints at ground level, when I'm used to watching from a stand. I found it difficult to see the player’s movement off the ball. Although from what I did see they did seemed to running into space and the tempo at times was good. Wotton at the Winchester game seemed rusty at times. But again I think this may just be lack of games and his touch and sharpness hopefully will start to get back. Killer's if he stays fit, is going to need a lot more games. But then I wouldn't expect anything else. Considering just how long he has been out. He must have it in the back of his mind, that this is his last shot of playing. But in his time he was one of the best CB in the land and he is still pretty young for the position.

With regards to Viafara I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I wonder whether Jan feels there is a place in the new look formation. I love the guy, he'll run all day, but his passing sometimes lets him down. Also I was thinking Rasiak would have played at some point yesterday. But he didn’t even travel.

Like many of the people who have posted above, I went to both games yesterday. Clearly it is too early to form any conclusions regarding our prospects for the new season. I do believe that the pre season is being managed in a logical and progressive way. Neither side on display yesterday will be the finished article, but in both cases the mixture of youth and experience was very encouraging. As JP concludes, the Basingstoke performace was about some good individual performances, i.e. Surman, Gillet and
McColdrick etc, and Winchester about team organisation. I think the system worked well at Winchester, with due respect to the level of the opposition, and liked Jake Thomson and Joseph Mills getting forward from full back. Of course the icing on the cake was the return of "Killer". Welcome back to him, there is still a long way to go, but due respect for his determination. I continue to be cautiously optimistic for the new season, and we could do without ongoing negativity and "guest appearances" from small minded igitators on this site. The only point that "Lowe Out" wishes to establish is that he has no point.

My sense is that the negative posters are beginning to run out of steam although it is obvious that even those of us who are positive and optimistic are all very carefully acknowledging that its very early days just yet.

Pre-season get-togethers are all fine and dandy, but I bet that, come next May, you will be saying that you would prefer to be where Wolves are.
Are we above Wolves in the 'pre-season' league?
I agree with 'stop the whingeing', but the manager does not yet know what his league starting 11 will be which is why these games take place. Just watch, enjoy and see if the 11 that you pick is the same as what the manager choses for the first league game.

I do pity Saints if the future fans are at this intelligence level. Currently almost all true Saints fans dont mind his return. I didnt say they forgive him for some of his decisions he made last time but they dont hold grudges when we are in the predicament we are in. He seems to have had a good start so far. Good coaching set up, sensible cost cutting and even bringing in a few players we did not expect. We could well be the underdogs for the play-offs or one better this season. We still have quality players here lets not forget. Rasiak is one of the best stickers in the league. Surman is one of the brightest prospects in the league and player with premiership players in the u.21 team. With have got skill and strength in the team which is very important.

You have had a good night\\\'s sleep. Mummy has given you your breakfast, and is now preparing dinner. It is a nice, bright, sunny morning. What the hell are \\\'DONEKEYS\\\'?
What are you doing hiding up the trees outside my bedroom window with a pair of binoculars?!! You sick, sick man. You should be ashamed of yourself
Ash, you're bang on the money. Rasiak, for all his faults, is arguably the best striker in the Championship- the other is probably Stern John. If we have to sell Skacel (very over-rated) and Viafara then I'd rather they go and Rasiak stay. Had Rasiak not been loaned out last season we'd have had more firepower up front. I remember games v Coventry, Ipswich and Burnley where we could have won for a good striker- 9 points instead of 2.

I have just discovered that Saints No1 Fan, Nick Illingsworth has written a book, 'Saints Preserved'. Before I send off for it, would be interested to know whether anyone has read it, and if so, how do they rate it?
Thanks.

There's at least one glaring error on every page. I'm thinking of trying to find a publisher for a sequal, provisionally titled Saints Preserved: an errata!
Further, I've been (fairly) reliably informed that Hagiology Publishing were thinking of suing him for defamation, because he cites them as a source!

Tracey, as I understand it Strachan has insisted that the game be played as a serious pre-season match, so although Le Tiss and Claus will take part, I understand that Claus will only play the last 10 minutes or so. Don't know how long Le Tiss will play for!

David, give it a rest mate. I'm not a Lowe fan but I would be delighted if we won promotion, giving his supporters (of which I guess you are one) the opportunity to crow and take the mick in general.

I think most (I stress MOST) of the anti Lowe lobby have been very quiet of late and are doing exactly what the pro Lowe lobby have asked. They have kept it buttoned and are waiting to see if Lowe has pulled a master stroke.

So do yourself and this forum a favour. Be happy that Lowe is not the topic of every posting and stop trying to inflame ill feeling with your "anti Lowe knuckle dragger" comments.

Can I come to your party please. I'll just stand in a corner and say nice things about my favourite team. If you could persuade your friend David to come I'll invite him into the naughty boy's corner and talk to him about the damage he's doing to our Club by being as negative as he is

I compared us to wolves to show we may be actually looking better than our rivals. My mate supports them and says they have been awful. Just fed up reading all these posts slagging off the management and staff, give them a chance. It can only start better than Burleys season last year !

Still worried about the fullback positions! Any more news regarding the possible return of Chris Baird (on loan)?
Can Skacal play at left back...a position that needs a left footer?
