Poortvliet to field his first team

7:00am Friday 1st August 2008

Saints fans will get their first proper glimpse of Jan Poortvliet's new look Saints for the forthcoming Championship season when they take on West Ham at St Mary's tonight.

Head coach Poortvliet has said he will treat the game as if it were next weekend's opener at Cardiff, fielding his first team and only making substitutions to effect the game rather than for fitness.

Poortvliet is hoping to see the same resolute steel his team have shown in defence so far this season - but wants an extra cutting edge in attack.

In the three recognised first team pre-season friendlies against Celtic, Cheltenham and Hereford, Saints have scored just once - in the 1-1 draw at Cheltenham - through Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Poortvliet thinks that will change when the forward players start to believe in themselves.

And he is optimistic that can happen against Premiership opposition tonight.

He said: "We will go out to make a big game and we shall see.

"When we make a substitution it will be to try and make the team better.

"Until now we have had to have everyone play because I have to see everyone.

"This game we will treat like a Championship game. Whatever the game needs, we will bring people on.

"A lot of people need the 90 minutes, they are well prepared and have had some good games - now have to go out for as long as possible.

Fans will not be at the game, another poor turn out my guess about 12500. This is NOT AT THE TEAM but at Lowe, he will not get any more of my money. Do not have a go at me as thousands of true fans feel the same I am NOT the only one that wont be their. Lowe out and I sure thousands will return. He has split our fan base and Ime sure he wont even understand WHY the fans have turned away. Wake up please Mr Lowe before its to late.

I agree with you sean, i believe we are showing some good spirit. Yes i am sure the anti lowe fans will say we have only managed to score a few goals but hey, as the boss says confidence is key, we leeked so many goals last seasona nd so far we have strong defence.

People staying away to hurt Lowe? I've never heard anything more moronic. The only thing it will damage is our club. Some people are so narrow minded.

Im not a Lowe fan, but a lot of the cost cutting neasures that have taken place I can see the sense in. We are not a premiership club anymore and if idiots keep on with this pathetic stance on not giving Lowe thier money, then we wont be able to afford to survive in the Championship much longer either!

If you are true supporters then grow up and support your team!

I agree with the reasonable positive tone of most of the previous posts. It is time to stop the whingeing and whinning, and support your team. As with most reasonable people, I have my own view of Rupert Lowe et al, both as a business man and a football person. Anyone with one ounce of passion for Saints in their body would stop all this negativity and support their team. COYR.

The Anti-Lowe fanatics do not have the intellectual capacity to make a considered decision on whether to stay away or not.

They will not be there because they are lazy, shallow, good-time fans who have no concept of the damage they are doing to the Club.

it is not Lowe splitting the Club, it is the witless, the prejudiced and the stupid.

I do not support Lowe, I have no interest in him. He is irrelevant.

I can't support the Club by NOT going to matches. I can only support the Club by paying out my meagre pension to attend when I can.

The Club means everything. Lowe means nothing. Get over him asn excuse for huffing and puffing and get out on the terraces and support the Team.

Its a great team and a great Club and it needs your support over the next 9 mo0nths or so more than anytime in its history.

Punish Lowe with the contempt of silence and shout your heads off for the team.

I am very pleased with the subscribers reactions this morning. The research is going well and the trend is definately towards this debilitating depression being conquered. I used to call myself a supporter, but more over a fan more accurately describes my mood. Once football became dependent upon money - I feel as though my £10/£20/£30? makes FA difference in the fortunes of my club! I pick and chose games I want to see - my finances are not a bottoless pit. As for not going to SMS because of Lowe - I will not spend another penny there until he is gone. My money will be going to clubs I chose to visit - like Doncaster, Preston, Burnley et al.
I will always look for their result first if I am not at a game, infact Saturday afternoons I'm obsesses about knowing the score virtually every second a match is in progress.
I don't have a holier than thou attitude, but why don't people respect there are fans out there who don't want Rupert or Michael anywhere near our club?
Supporter - someone who financially supports the club
Fan - someone who loves the club but not at any cost.
If you want change - you have to do something. My effort is to starve Rupert of my £300 per annum when visiting SMS. It doesn't hurt him one bit - nor my team, but I feel really smug inside knowing it is not going towards the bubbly at the share holders meeting!

As for Lowe bashing, get real. We have no sugar daddy, we make all our fortunes on the pitch. He made the mistake of promoting from within, he is not the only Saints chairman to do this. He was not given his first choice.
All I can do as a fan is support the team, a positive atmosphere helps the players make positive decisions. If we turn they lose heart. Of course there are limits.

You immature and childish comments gives Saints a bad name. Sometimes i wonder if you even think about what you are typing. You seem to think that because you pay £15 to see a game that that money will go into Lowe's pocket. You are seriously that idiotic? Do you really think a financial man such as Lowe will bankrupt his business by letting the debt grow by taking the gate money? Seriously...

Think a bit more before you type your comments in the future. You may not be a Lowe fan, very few are but most of us do realize that first there is nothing you can do and second that he is the one person right now who can turn the club around and make them into a club that makes a profit again. Not many true Saints fans would stay away from the club because someone they dislike is the chairmen. Its the club you go to watch, not the clubs chairmen.

I live in Hertfordshire. My local team is now Luton but my heart and soul belongs to Southampton and it costs me £40 in petrol every time I drive down from North of Watford.

I'll only respond to matters of fact right. Money from the ticket sales goes to SFC not to Woopert.

Your excuse for not going is therefore WRONG. If you're not lazy or shallow then you have no backbone.

The best time to support our Club is when it needs it most.

I judge that time to be now. You would rather stay at home and moan about Lowe and that, of course, is your choice.

This means the Club loses money, the kitty for player's wages drops, you don't get to see your favourite Team play and SFC drifts another few £'s towards going bust.

Sounds like everyone a loser on that basis.

You don't really believe that the Money goes to Lowe, do you?

I couldn't agree more - this is not the worst point in our history and real fans stick with the club through thick and thin. Mr Lowe is irrelevent, its the team that counts. RL is here to return his investment to what is was 3 years ago and I really hope he succeeds! Cant you lowe haters see that that if his investment goes up in value it means the team has been successful and isn't that what we all want? Wake up! There are no millionaires out there prepared to sell their soul for the Saints in their current finacial plight. I wonder if those 'stay away fans' will be fighting for a ticket if we are successful? What a stupid comment. The crowd was full for one reason, the last game of the season and we were in a relegation fight. No fans are walking away because of Lowe coming back. Or at least none of the fans that go to the games regularly are. The only one moaning on here is YOURSELF. You want Lowe gone. GREAT. But posting idiotic messages on every article is not only pointless but its immature. Unless you want to do something about it, such as finding an investor i suggest you shut up with your moaning. All these "LOWE OUT" posts are just boring now. Non productive. Do you really think posting them everyday will change other peoples opinions? No. People have already decided what there views are. A lot of people dislike Lowe on principle BUT so far he has done nothing wrong. In fact so far he has been positive towards the club moving forward. Sensible cost cutting. New signing to replace the old faces leaving. Even signing Schniderlin is a very positive move. The guy is young and looks to have a bright future in the game. If you want to rant, rant on but realize that you only look like an idiot to all those that are anti/pro lowe and to those who just are here to support the club.

Graham clear off and support your local team, its to far for you to travel to SMS on your dole money, must be a team a little nearer to your house. Ime not lazy or shallow, I will always support saints but I will not give my money to Lowe.
I live in Hertfordshire. My local team is now Luton but my heart and soul belongs to Southampton and it costs me £40 in petrol every time I drive down from North of Watford. I\'ll only respond to matters of fact right. Money from the ticket sales goes to SFC not to Woopert. there is an absolute army of Income Tax and VAT Inspectors ensuring that things are done properly Your excuse for not going is therefore WRONG. If you\'re not lazy or shallow then you have no backbone. The best time to support our Club is when it needs it most. I judge that time to be now. You would rather stay at home and moan about Lowe and that, of course, is your choice. This means the Club loses money, the kitty for player\'s wages drops, you don\'t get to see your favourite Team play and SFC drifts another few £\'s towards going bust. Sounds like everyone a loser on that basis. You don\'t really believe that the Money goes to Lowe, do you?
Excellent comments I must agree with a lot of what you are saying. The money does support his view of things, how can we protest againsts the man if we dont hit him by holding back cash. I repeat last game last season, the team was in trouble, SMS sold out. Saints have a large fan base, and when the time is right (LOWE GONE) it will be sold out again. You cannot continue to moan because people have a different opinion to YOU. Its all our club and we DO ALL care live with it. Whats changed from last season - YOU WORK IT OUT. I would like to apologise to you, YOU DO CARE about Saints but so do I, lets both put OUR club first and agree to differ.
Thanks. I appreciate that.

One of the advantages of getting older is you have seen most things.

The most powerful protest I ever saw was in the 1960's olympics when the American Athletes Raised a black gloved right hand in protest about the way they were treated.

The most powerful protest against Lowe would be for every seat to be filled - showing support for the Club - and then at a pre-arranged times as many of the Saints fans who wanted to held up some placard or printed sign and faced the Director's Box and gave it a 1 minute dignified silence.

Lowe can laugh off the jeering and booing - he certainly has in the past but the silent treatment is much deeper and powerful.

In any event "CLUB first, Lowe no where". I've just come up with a placard.

I'll be there cheering the Team if my wife allows me some money for petrol. (You couldn't lend me £50, could you?)

My god, the first time in ages I've been able to write a message on this site that isn't a response to negative rubbish!

Great to see the site 95 per cent full of positive comments and only the very hardcore Pompey fans posting their usual rantings.

To be honest though I think today's postings are a better reflection of what I recognise at SMS – the vast majority wanting the team to do well.

It's all too easy for the negative few to make themselves look dominant on this site, but less easy if we drown them out at the ground.

Up the Saints.

By the way. For me, this isn't some deluded optimism that will be wiped out if the result isn't that great tonight and I hope others will agree, especially as West Ham will have plenty of quality.

Even our first choice line-up is going to need time and patience to get results and get used to the style of play and their new team mates.

And we need to develop the sort of mentality where, when we have a set-back, we just jump back up and get stronger.

It would be all too easy to start looking for people to blame.

Put it this way – we can either do a William Gallas and sit down and sulk (and it didn't help his team or win him any admirers), or we can try to recreate the old spirit where we're the underdogs and show a bit of fight.

I will be at SMS tonight and on Tuesday with two 13 year old lads, who love SAINTS, their team. They are really looking forward to seeing their TEAM play against a Premiership side with household name players and are both wishing it is not too much longer before SAINTS are back where they belong. They long for the days they can go into School with their heads held high happy to be competing and playing against the Arsenal, Chelsea, Manu U, Liverpools of this world because they support their TEAM and actually wear a shirt that means something, not just picked up in JJB sports and they have never seem their players so much as kick a ball.
It would be easy for the next generation of SAINTS fans to hang their heads in shame, never go near SMS again if they read and listened to you negative Saints moaners who come on here everyday just to whinge and whine. Lets hope Jan unearths another young superstar who can become the kids hero, like Le Tiss. Every true football fan loves their CLUB through thick and thin and does not give a **** about who is in charge - we are not going to SMS tonight to see if Rupert Lowe has turned up, we are going to support our TEAM and run our eyes over Schniderlin, Lloyd James, Lee Holmes etc. ahead of next week's game at Cardiff. Looking forward to tonight. Should be interesting if he does put his first team out. Poortvliet talks a good game but has he got the quality to work with? I am willing Saints to play good attacking football and for the youngsters to fly forward. Plenty of goalmouth action is what I want. Hopefully at the West Ham end! On a different tack - why can't you lot try to build some bridges instead of slagging each other off about Lowe? Lowe coming back has divided us - no doubt about it. Why can't we concentrate on what we have in common rather than slag each other off over our differences (or is that the reasons some of you come on here - to slagg people off?). Tell Lowe what you think of him tonight if you must but lets all cheer the team on and show the players they have our full support.

Beat most of the non-league teams. So we should.
BUT
Couldn't score at home against Celtic.
Only scored one against Cheltenham.
Failed to score against mighty Hereford.
Didn't bring in a single player anyone had heard of.
Got rid of/getting rid of several internationals.
Conclusions:
1) 15000 masochists a match will watch Saints struggle at home;
2) roll on League 1; and
3) Lowe out.

On the basis that the attendances fell after relegation (not unexpected) and continued to fall, in particular with the poor football, effort, attitude and results last season, I think the reality is that Lowe being in or out has very little effect on attendances.

We had the time without Lowe.
Attendances went down.
Results got worse.

The last game was the only exception. Fans realised they cared, heard the rallying calls and came and lifted the team to a big result.

I think there are simply a few, very vocal anti Lowe voices (often using more than one name on their postings) and also a few pro Lowe voices, maybe also using more than one name.

The rest are in it for the football.
They probably scroll past the irrelevant posts hoping for football talk, or don't bother reading beyond the article itself.

A lot of voices in the last few days have tried to be positive and stick to the football, mostly prompting abuse and argument from others who want to continue ranting.

As for next seasons attendances, I think like a lot of clubs, the fans have less spare cash than last year, so season tickets will be down for most clubs.
Many will pick and choose games.
Others will wait and see what the season starts like and come back if they like what they see.

A very small number may say they will not go because of Lowe (if they truly went regularly before). But will have no real affect overall.

Look after your bank account eh

In 2006 we ended the financial year £3.3m in debt and it would of been near on £8m if Walcott wasnt sold. Over £2million wasted on a radio station that was a total flop. Woodward paid £500,000 even though we are skint and in the Championship. Gets Rasiak on £15k a week and moaning now at overpaid players. Pot and kettle.

Wasted £4.5million personally on Agustin Delgado who 'he' bought on the basis of a 30min video ! Background would of showed his injury status and 'club issues'.

I could list many more things but its all become a total joke. Lowe is now the director of football. He brought in the players to date as the dutch havent got a clue.

As for youth its all spin and will be a total disaster with no experienced players around.

Artful dodger, dont you mean big W**KER, why are you so rude.
I knew that you could not be John the elder, because at 10am he would be out at work, while his naughty schoolboy son was left at home, while mummy went out to do the shopping. Enjoy your school holidays, and it is with a sense of relief that you are writing your silly little notes on here, rather than with a can of spray paint on people's walls.
Still a w**ker, some things dont change. Get a new tool leave your c*ck alone.
Duly noted that you posted at 3.28pm so guess that both Mummy and Daddy were still out at work, and made you stay in because they don't want you playing with the big boys.
You obviously are obsessed with ideas that you pick up from the dirty books you keep under your mattress.
I wonder what you will be, if you are allowed to grow up.

Well, at half-time we are 2-1 up against a West Ham team that will be better than most we'll face in the Championship this season and according to my mate at the match we're playing good football- most notably Lee Holmes. I don't care who runs the club so long as we play well on the pitch and we don't go into administration.

where is euell and saga?

I take it skacel, Safri are as good as gone.
Rasiak looks like he needs to get off there wages.
So does that mean, skacel, safri, rasiak, euell and saga are off? I would take that if were can get a good rb and lb in on loan.

Well - that was absolutely superb tonight!...

I have to say that despite the average age of our team they all acquitted themselves incredibly well!..

Highlights for me were:

*Obviously Michael Svennson back and looking assured and fit
*Gillett showed good compsure against the likes of Parker etc
*Schneiderlin looked the part
*McGoldrick took his finishes very well!
*Llalana looked more disciplined and yet effective
BUT!!!!... Thompson was outstanding!

Everyone else looked solid and composed... a very very good performance - lets hope we can build on it and move forward!

Just seen a bunch of kids with a so called ducth donkey who judas wilde/lowe appointed play some of the best football I have seen a saints team play in years..

IF it was not for one of the most obvious offside (west hams equaliser) we would have won and FULLY desereved it..

I suggest that some fans stop worrying about who runs the club and give the kids some encouragement as they were superb tonight..

more of the same please

Was at the match tonight also and while I agree with your praise your forgetting the excellent Holmes too he was brillant with his forward runs and crosses a thorn in the side of the West Ham defence all evening.

Also great to see Michael 'Killer' Svensson back and Captaining the side for 90+ minutes a good result against a good Premier League side which had many 1st teamers playing. It should also be pointed out we only made 1 sub and didn't let up the pace all game, so fitness has improved 10 fold since last season, also the passing was a joy to watch with 1 touch quick fluid passing throughout the team with counter attacking play utilitising our pace on the wings with some great cross field play.

On 1st impressions these Dutch coaches know there stuff so don't discount them just yet and give them a chance.

We can at least be optomistic for the new season now, bring on Stoke!!!

Personally I can't wait for August 9th at Cardiff also.

The West Ham Game was the first time I saw the team this pre season and I was astonished and worried at kick off by the absence of nearly all of the more experienced players. Surnam was, I think, the third oldest! My astonishment remains but I am now not so worried - what a revelation they were. One touch football played at pace; great width provided by Holmes and Thompson, who combined well down the right with James who looked an excellent right back - quick, great timing in the tackle and playing the ball to feet out of defence. Thompson is fast, perhaps not quite as quick as Dyer but better balanced and an infinitely better crosser. Schneiderlin has undoubted class and Gillett was a revelation, especially in the first half. Svensson was very good but the back four as a unit probably lack a bit of height, although Perry performed well again. Bialkowski had a couple of terrific saves but on occasion lost his bearings a bit. I still think Surnam is too good a creator to play at left back but his linking with Gillett and James was excellent.

The greatest credit, however, must go to the management. They have totally changed the way the team plays in such as short time. No hoofing the ball up the park; playing to feet with one touch passing and sometimes at a decent pace; the players working in triangles as they go forward and hunting the ball in units when possession was lost. Both the defence and the midfield worked well as units but perhaps not quite so well up front. Lallana was creative and clever and Holmes kept his discipline well to give the width on the left we have so desperately lacked in recent years. McGoldrick played the best I have ever seen him by some way and took his goals well but I still don’t think he has enough about him, especially in terms of pace and workrate. The team looked well motivated and worked hard, not giving up when West Ham, deservedly, clawed their way back into the game.

It was only a friendly, although it was quite keenly contested, and we must not read too much into it but what I saw was hugely encouraging, indeed rather exciting. Very interesting that Poortvliet kept the same side pretty much to the end. If this really is what he sees as his first eleven, then we should be selling some of the more established players on high wages and use the funds to bring in some cover at full back, especially left back as I feel Thomas will do fine at right back, but second choice to James on tonight’s showing, who probably shaded it for me as man of the match.

The whingeing stay-aways missed a treat. These players and this management deserve the backing of all fans. Anyone boycotting home games is without doubt harming the club and poor crowds might well be the greatest danger the team and the club face this season. It is likely that this team is too inexperienced and a bit lightweight to challenge for promotion this season but keep the faith and we might build something very good indeed.

It was indeed a good game. Very encouraging. I was especially impressed with Morgan Schneiderlin, who has a little touch of Franz Beckenbauers about him. It might be a touch insensitive to start calling him "der Kaiser" though, as he's French.
One factor, worth pointing out, is how shirty some of the West Ham players became even before we scored. Our lads rode a lot of foul play and refereeing indiference tonight, kept their feet, were rarely ruffled and were never intimidated.

I was encouraged by what I saw for 20 minutes or so against Celtic. For long periods of the game tonight we saw an alleged Premiership team outclassed by some raw but promising opposition playing football. Possession, passing, movement - basic stuff that we seem to have forgotten in recent years. West Ham seemed to think they were down here as a formality, but ran out of ideas pretty quickly. We had a team who seemed to know what was required of them, playing to a system, and playing as a team, anchored by Michael Svensson. There seemed to be a lot of belief and hunger out there. The tracking back, the hustling of the opposition, the refusal to lie down, the fitness levels. It has been suggested that we will be out-muscled by big strong Championship teams, but I did not see us being afraid tonight. As an example, Simon Gillett, the smallest player on the pitch sorted the biggest in Carlton Cole. Maybe there is cause for some optimism this season. COYR.........

I went to the match tonight and have to say I was astonished. I never imagined that a bunch of youngsters only just out of nappies could play such scintilating football. I thought Schneiderlin looks like a £2m player easily and holmes looked fantastic on the left wing. Lloyd James was outstanding at Right back aswell.

Also wat about stern John! A revised character! I think that he could be good. He looks much fitter than last season. So overall I feel very excited about the new season. All you stay aways missed a fantastic game and should return as soon as possible as the team NEEDS your support! I feel much better about my season ticket now and cant wait for the season to begin.

Great game tonight, the way we played was outstanding. Especially impressed by Bialkowski, Schniederlin, Holmes, Thomson, Gillet & McGoldrick. The rest of the team also put in a good solid performance. I think we're gonna be in for an exciting season, if we don't have too many injurys I believe we'll finnish some where in the top 10.
