Powerboat race still to go-ahead

A LEGENDARY powerboat race threatened by cancellation has been given the green light by race organisers.

The Cowes Classic had been under threat as a result of poor entries, but following a series of meetings, P1 bosses have announced the race will go ahead this year - and so far 41 boats have signed up.

The race, which sees the boats sprint from Cowes to Torquay and back again, will start from a line off Hurst Castle at 11am on Saturday.

Event director Mike Lloyd, said: "We have been able to resurrect this event due to the passion and dedication of those involved and to the generosity of those who wish to see the race, which started in the Solent waters in 1960 as the brainchild of Sir Max Aitken and John Coote.

"We are especially grateful to the Cowes Yacht Haven for its help and collaboration and to all those who have given their time and energy to save this event."
