Saints grab first league win of the season

SAINTS picked up their opening league win of the season - and their first under Jan Poortvliet - with a brilliant display at Derby.

Poortvliet's young side comprehensively outplayed the Rams and could have won by a huge margin, even if in the end they had to settle for 1-0.

It was a victory for the attractive, attacking style Saints are trying to employ and three very welcome points that has got them up and running.

The game got off to a lively start with both sides looking purposeful in attack but without creating a chance.

Kris Commons briefly looked like he would threaten but his flashing shot ended up slashed so far wide it went out for a throw.

With six minutes gone Derby again were dangerous with Paul Green's shot, after Tyrone Mears had beaten Andrew Surman, being deflected away from goal.

You got the impression after so long without a win that the Rams saw this as their big chance and they came storming out to try to get an early goal - and the crowd on their side.

Saints knew the longer they kept them out the more the crowd would turn and the harder it would make it for the Rams.

But it was Saints who came so close to taking the lead on 11 minutes.

A slip from left back Jay McEveley allowed Jamie White in behind and he showed good vision to square to Lee Holmes.

The former Derby man was one-on-one with Roy Carroll who blocked his shot with his legs but the ball looped up in the air. McEveley chased back to head off the line and over the bar.

Michael Svensson was allowed space at the far post from the corner but couldn't connect with the ball on the volley.

Just five minutes later the Swedish centre half exchanged heated words with Kelvin Davis as he allowed the ball to drop over the his head to the waiting Rob Hulse but the Derby man couldn't take advantage, totally mishitting his volley.

McGoldrick had an unbelievable chance to give Saints the lead on 20 minutes.

Derby again fell apart in possession and Simon Gillett quickly slid the ball through to McGoldrick who was virtually on his own running at the Rams goal. He looked up to see Carroll but could only fire at the keeper who duly produced the save.

McGoldrick tried again on 29 minutes, this time from the edge of the area, but saw his shot deflected over.

As the half wore on the Derby fans were just beginning to get frustrated with their team and Saints grew in confidence, knocking the ball around nicely while the Rams looked increasingly tentative and scared of making a mistake when in possession.

Robbie Savage had a chance to ease Derby nerves on 39 minutes but he sidefooted over from ten yards out after Commons had got to the by-line and cut back.

Saints squandered another chance two minutes later when McGoldrick picked out Adam Lallana and put him through on goal. This time Carroll was out to save at his feet.

Svensson became the first player in the book just before the break for tugging back Hulse.

Saints had to withstand some late pressure and had Davis to thank for a good save to turn away Emanuel Villa's header but they went in at the break reasonably content with the game goalless.

Derby made two half-time changes to try to improve their performance with Dean Leacock and Nacer Barazite replacing Steve Davies and Claud Davis.

Holmes was the first to threaten as Saints worked the ball nicely to him on the left side of the area and he flashed a shot from an acute angle across goal but just wide.

Saints were playing some great football, moving the ball so crisply and quickly and Derby had no answer.

McGoldrick was the next with a sight of goal but his shot was deflected wide while Lallana curled an effort just past the post moments later.

All the good football had now brought a host of chances throughout the game for Saints, leaving Poortvliet to hope that the misses wouldn't prove costly.

Just such a warning was in evidence on 54 minutes when Green headed a difficult chance over the bar after Davis had punched out as far as the edge of the box.

The game really pulsed as Derby missed a great chance with Commons through on goal but Davis producing a great save at his feet, before Saints went straight up the other end and took the lead on 58 minutes.

Lloyd James whipped in a cross from the right to Lallana, his header was half stopped by Carroll but was forced onto the underside of the bar.

The ball crossed the line as it bounced down and the linesman flagged but as it came out McGoldrick made sure, heading in from close range. The latter tried to claim the goal but it appeared as if it was Lallana's.

Derby made their final change on 61 minutes with Nathan Ellington replacing Hulse.

Saints made their first switch on 67 minutes with Paul Wotton coming on for White. Lallana went to the right, Morgan Schneiderlin into the hole and Wotton to one of the two holding roles.

Lallana turned McEveley inside out but couldn't find anybody with the cutback before Green blasted over at the other end.

Saints were dealt a blow when James hobbled off injured on 71 minutes with Jack Cork coming on for his debut.

McGoldrick came so close to doubling Saints' lead three minutes later when Gillett stood the ball up to the far post and the striker's header looped over Carroll but bounced off the top of the bar.

With ten minutes to go McGoldrick got in another header, this time from Holmes' cross, but Carroll tipped it over the bar.

Saints made their final switch with six minutes left with Stern John on for Holmes.

McGoldrick had one more chance as he blazed over the bar but Saints looked comfortable while the Derby fans hurled abuse as their team's dismal run continued.

As the final whistle blew it confirmed three points for Saints in a performance that was far more empathic and one sided than the scoreline suggested.

Well done boys, it sounded like a "comprehensive" 1-0 win! Nice to put one over Derby as well. Let's see if we can take this into Tuesdays game against a Brum side who may not field a first choice eleven. If you can get there it's only a tenner.

Not perfect but a very good win and the boys are learning with every performance. Very few teams had a tougher start to the campaign than saints, Cup Finalists and two of the relegated favourites!!! I honestly beleive it takes 10 games for a team to really gel. Come on you reds.

Weird though, even after the friendlies we had more posts than this - it would seem a lot of "fans" lose interest when we get a good result. Presumably all the real supporters are out celibrating and the Dementors are in a funk.

Well put. I was at the Birmingham game and we were well on top for 50 minutes then ran out of steam. JP looks like he's blending a useful side with quality players like Lallana and Holmes shining through.

I'd be gutted if a new broom sweeps out Poortvliet and Wotte, they are a breath of fresh air at the club.

All the sad b******s who use this site (way too often!) as some kind of alternative to a real life (ie the ones who just criticise and seek to undermine and destroy - you know who you are!) should just SHUT UP, and support the Saints again. A young team, trying and, today, succeeding (despite whoever actually owns the club, and face it you saddos's, real fans never really care who actually owns their club as long as it's winning)is to be lauded and celebrated. Good on you Jan Poortvliet, for winning and for playing good football too. Maybe the negative older players will now start to believe and then who knows? Meantime, what a wonderful Saturday evening. Let's all hope for many, many more. THAT's what real football fans are supposed to want.

After the Birmingham game I wrote in to say that it was clear to me that the team are able to progress to greater things. Although unable to go today, the commentary on the radio seemed to say that the progress continued today. If we are able to keep the squad intact ---- bolstering the defence to enable the likes of "killer" to rest occasionally----- we have the potential to go all of the way.
One point must be remembered ---- Rupert Lowe wanted half of the Dutch duo when he brought a certain gentleman from the other shaped ball to the club------ we thought he was "barking up the wrong tree" -------maybe he knows more than we think.

If any take over was to happen I just hope we keep Jan Poorvliet & don't get Shearer. I really like what he's doing at the club & he's bringing back the passion. Derby were an utter disgrace last season, how things would have been different had WE gone up- Bale and Jones have proved that, jury's out on Baird. As for now we've proved that although lacking experience we do have bottle AND ability- Derby seem to lack both. Birmingham and Cardiff were good sides, most in the division are not. Good win today, but, as mentioned elsewhere, keep your feet on the ground with this win.

I don't see why everyone is rounding on Sailor Sam. I read his posts, and have always assumed that, although he's a pompey fan, he looks out for SFC in a positive way. I live in Fareham, surrounded by Portsmouth fans, which is no mean feat, being married to a Saint. My family have good friends who wear blue shirts at the weekend, but we see the game as just that, A GAME. I would suggest that Sam is genuine, and as such, deserves a bit of respect for his opinions. Blind hatred can only be a negative thing. Take it from a Rangers fan who is sick of being told to hate anything Green& White. Concentrate on the game.

Just got back from Derby. Of course one swallow doesn't make a Spring but today showed there could be a flock of them on the way. We survived the opening 20 minutes well then took over the game. I was afraid that in the second half we could not keep it up..but we stepped up a gear and played some truly great football, the like of which I haven't seen for years. Everyone played their part but, for me, Simon Gillett and Adam Llalanna were outstanding. Gillett out-Savaged Savage. People around me in the crowd were saying, "Wow, look at that" loads of times at the way we played. (actually, they used a bit more Anglo-Saxon). Now going to have a wee dram to celebrate!

Agreed. The real Sailor Sam is several levels of sophistication higher than this posting.

Not even sure where Sam lives. He's very coy about his Post Code - I've never seen him admitting to actually living in Pompey.

Anyway, nuff of that.

Sam will also realise that a lot of postings are cautious and no one's looking for automatic promotion at this stage.

See my earlier posting.

If we get 3 wins in a row for the first time in I can't remember when AND the season is half over AND we're up there then you might just hold out the tiniest hope BUT we all realise that's a long way off.

Are you having a laugh? Scrapyard Sam posts disgusting sarcastic dribble every week. That inferiority complex will never leave him. Not surprising after 44 years in the fizzy.

heard that saints need to raise £3M by next week £1m from Davies plus need to sell Surman for £2m to Reading or the club go into admin and lose 10 points how would that affect the kids

Where did you hear that spped64? I'd be interested to read or hear that from source. Just checked Hemscott website (our financial advisors) and nothing of it there. I shall check again where the stock markets open again tommorrow, however, I doubt it will appear. Being a listed plc company, anything like that would have to be listed. Have Southampton Leisure (our parent company, god bless 'em) even issued a profit warning yet? Have the existing shareholders been tapped for funds or donations as is common practice in this situation. Saints currently have the full support of Barclays bank, for this season at least. A bank would not give support of this kind, for these amounts of money, in the current financial climate. Clearly, a sound business plan is in place for the club to continue as we are. According to the trading statement, the club lost £5million for the year ending 31 july 2008. Not bad when you consider all of those reports declaring "Saints Heamoraging £1m Per Month". I fear that this is in the same vein of fantastical doom and gloom mongering as those reports.

Thanks for the lead to Hemscott.

I have been looking at "Interactive Investor to date.

Do you get enough info. from Hemscott without being a premium investor?

Do you know where I can see a list of SFC Shareholders?

I am sure that these guys post stuff on the site which they make up in their heads or read on page 267 of "News of the World" after a weekend in the pub.

And I keep hearing cryptic comments about a takeover and a certaim Alan Shearer. Have you actually heard anything?

Thanks for your help if possible

The takeover will happen as per david armstrong on hampshire radio yesterday.I dont anticipate that it will mean immediate funding for transfers but the club will not go into admin or lose points, and reading between the lines although david was coy i dont see a change in the strategy i.e. the kids will be given time to gel and even if shearer becomes manager although i think this is unlikely im sure poortvliet will be staying.lets wait and see but things looking more positive now we have that first win.lets get behind the team beginning on tuesday ,tickets are only 10 quid lets make it a night to remember!come on saints!

On these sites, there is only one thing that you can be certain of, and that is the true identity of you, the person who is submitting a post.

I have noticed a number of 'sailor sam' posts that I have had nothing to do with, and certainly do not reflect my opinion.

If it happens to me, then I guess that I am not the only one who 'gets the treatment'.

Why does it happen? I can think of a number of reasons. In my case, I think that some like to submit posts that appear to contradict a genuine post of mine. There are others, possibly Saints fans, who either want to have a pop at someone, using my name, so that they can leap to their defence using their own. There are many reasons. Some, I suppose, are just sick.

Do I mind? No! If someone has a go at me, they are leaving someone else alone - usually members of the Saints board of directors, their team managers or team members, so I console myself with the thought that at least they are having an easy ride.

As none of them know me, why should I bother? I realise that, as it is school holidays, there are a lot of juveniles with time on their hands, and lacking parental supervision, that get their exercise on a keyboard, so it occupies their time, and reduces their time vandalising cars, spraying graffiti or mugging old ladies.

Born in Sušice, Czechoslovakia, he began his career with his hometown club TJ Sušice and also played for TJ Klatovy before joining Slavia Praha in 2003. Pekhart played in the final of the UEFA Under-17 Championship in Luxembourg for his country against Russia. He scored seven times in 18 appearances at that level in 2005-06 competition.

Pekhart joined Tottenham during the summer of 2006 from Slavia.A fine first season for the young Czech striker in 2006-07 yielded 19 goals in 20 matches for Tottenham Academy and a further 12 appearances for the reserves. Only injury denied him the chance to improve that strike record. He also scored in Tottenham's Reserves' friendly win against RC Lens in November, 2006.

In 2007 he represented his country in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Canada as the youngest player in the squad having just turned 18. He played in all seven matches of the tournament, including the final against Argentina in which the Czechs finished runners up after Mauro Zarate scored the winning goal four minutes from full time for Argentina. Recently he has been picked for the U-21s and despite being younger than most others in the squad he has managed to score 6 goals in 7 matches.

Tomᚠmade his first team debut for Spurs scoring twice in an 8-0 pre-season win over spanish minnows Tavernes on 14 July 2008.

It looks as if you both have the same problem Denzil. To much time on your hands and nothing constructive to do with it.
