Saints see off Birmingham

Lee Holmes and Adam Lallana struck in either half to ease Southampton into the third round of the Carling Cup at the expense of their Coca-Cola Championship rivals.

Former Derby midfielder Holmes found the target in Saints' first-round victory over Exeter, and he struck the first here with a crisp strike from the edge of the area in the 17th minute.

Birmingham, who had emerged victorious at St Mary's earlier this season with a 2-1 victory in the league, were nowhere near their best and struggled to create anything of note throughout.

And the only surprise was that it took until the 85th minute for Southampton to guarantee the win with Lallana emphatically sealing their place in the third round with a clinical finish.

For the Saints the result represents their second victory on the bounce and their first against the Blues in three previous meetings.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish made five changes to the side which beat Barnsley 2-0 in the Championship on Saturday with Kemy Agustien coming in for his first start for the Blues.

Opposite number Jan Poortvliet also rang the changes with four first-team players rested for the clash. That meant starts for Bartosz Bialkowski, Wayne Thomas, Jack Cork and Paul Wotton.

After a quiet start by both sides it was Blues midfielder Gary McSheffrey who had the first effort in earnest but his long-range shot sailed well wide of the target.

Despite struggling to find a foothold in the match early on it was the hosts who took the lead.

Holmes, who had faced a late fitness test before kick-off, showed no signs of the hamstring injury which forced him off against Derby last time out as he controlled the ball on the edge of the area before firing into the bottom corner.

The visitors responded with a few speculative efforts but it was Southampton who went closest to adding to their lead after they hit the woodwork twice within a matter of seconds.

Lallana it was, who was left with his head in his hands after he first of all struck the bar with a shot and as the rebound fell kindly the midfielder side-footed the ball on to the post.

Clearly unhappy at his team's first-half performance McLeish made two changes at half-time with veteran striker Kevin Phillips and Jordon Mutch coming on for Garry O'Connor and McSheffrey.

The change, however, did not seem to inspire any change in the Blues as their lack of support to the strikers was clearly evident.

As the game wore on the visitors started to show the form which has seen them win their opening four games this season and went close to an equaliser through Quincy Owusu-Abeyie.

The former Arsenal man picked up the ball on the right and sent a fizzing shot towards goal which Bialkowski did brilliantly to hold onto with the deadly Phillips ready to pounce on any spillage.

But it visitors' night went from bad to worse five minutes from time when Lallana completed a comfortable victory for Southampton as he twisted and turned past Liam Ridgewell before firing into the bottom corner.

To be honest I have been despondent about the way Saints have played since Strachan came, I know we did well results wise under him but found most games boring. I am so excited about the team JP is putting out and for once cant wait for the next game to come around. It is so refreshing to hear a Saints team taking the game to their opponents and not giving up. COYR , lets fill the ground on saturday and push the boys onto another win. Only shame is Lowe is going to be smug, but give him his dues, he seems to have learnt a lesson and is keeping out of the spotlight, long may it continue.

Dont want to jinx us but I think there might be something in this "give the youngsters a chance to show what they can do" attitude. I must admit its early days but its very refreshing to see the kids doin alright so quickly. Fair play to old Pork Fillet he has got them playing some great football and not being hussled off thier game by the old guard (Savage of Derby was shown a few lessons on Sat!)
As its Saints we have to be prepared for some set backs, or maybe the old mentality has gone along with players who just picked up wages and impressed only when they were linked with a move.

More of the same please, already looking forward to Saturday, its been a few years since I have said that.

MikeC, Southampton says...

To see Thomas passing a ball out of defence 80 per cent of the time instead of lumping it forward. I think that just sums up the difference in this team. If you pass to your own side you have more chance of scoring and less chance of conceding. It was just fabulous to Jan's so called lightweights run rings round the favourites for promotion for the second time. And to see that they'd already learnt the lessons of the first game.

I suspect that the attendance was as much to do with having to prioritise which match to spend cash on as anything else. But if it is true that some some aren't going because they don't like the board, or the manager, or the Chairman, or the pitch is too green or some other twaddle they need to get off their **** and get to SMS on Saturday.

These players are playing their hearts out. Maybe they are playing for a future pay-packet. But at the moment they are playing like that for the Saints and it shows. They absolutely deserve - DESERVE - the support of every Saints fan who can beg or or borrow the cash to buy a ticket on Saturday. Get down to St Marys and support the team. You may even enjoy it.

Whoever discovered Lee Holmes deserves a pat on the back, he was awesome tonight. Cork looked good at the back and Joseph Mills made a steady debut. Gillett bossed the midfield and Lallana was unlucky before finally getting his chance at the end.

This team can only get better, Poortvliet was constantly encouraging the players and they all seemed to know what to do What a contrast to last season.

I followed it as well Glen here in the highlands. Have been calling for years to play the youngsters, and everyone saying, no you need experience. What crap, probably a blessing that our financial situation made this a necessity. Hope we can go for automatic promotion, because on this form they should fear no team. It is really refreshing that JP plays guys he thinks are worthy of a place, instead of the overpaid sulky brats that we have witnessed the last few years.

this was my first chance to see the new look saints in the flesh and i liked what i saw. i'm a big fan of european football and saints were neat and tidy on the ball and kept it well, even when they couldnt go forward they went back and started again (much to the annoyance of a few people sat in the kingsland with me) but i dont mind seeing that becuase as long as saints have the ball, that means we've got control and birmingham haven't, we can score and they cannot. i really liked the look of schneiderlin, gillet and wotton in midfield, gillet was my man of the match as i felt he ran midfield, dictated the direction of play and put some nice "beckham like" passes out to the wings.
i really enjoyed the game last night and if saints can keep that up then we'll have no problems in the championship this season, and even though the attendance of around 12000 is a really poor one for us (especially since it was reduced ticket prices) there was a good atmosphere inside the stadium.(although i didnt really like the songs about kevin phillips, even though he left us, i still think the guy is a class striker and deserved better but i suppose thats how football is these days!). all in all, a good game, good result and i like the way saints are trying play!

7:41am Wed 27 Aug 08

Good result, and read somewhere 68% possession!

I'm an anti-Lowe man, but the team does it's talking on the pitch. Great to have a feeling of confidence about each game - but take each one in turn. It's a marathon not a sprint. Even young legs run out of steam eventually.

It's obvious to me the fact we have youth in the side that know no fear, as against old. over paid, lazy, couldn't careless players (we all know who they are)things would change. Redknapp tried it away at Mansfield a couple of seasons ago - and we lost! He told us youth was not the answer - and herein lay the problem.

Still bouycotting SMS - as I will not contribute to Lowe's salary. Afterall he was the problem, and I have not forgiven him. It goes against the grain of being a fan - but I am not supporting the current board by spending my hard earned dosh at SMS after they have wasted so much on mediocre has beens to fill gaps in the past.

A nice away draw at Leeds would do me (or Hull) in the next round, to see what this team is really made of!

Well done lads - a team to be proud of at last. But it's only what most fans have been asking for - a bit of passion. Fortunately this lot have passion and a high level of skill too. Bodes well for the future.

That was the best football I have seen for a long time with a good quality short passing game. ...I can only dream of England playing like that!!

It was good to see the youngsters playing with confidence. The only down side was that we were reluctant to put the ball into the box, however we didn't just waste it by hoofing it goalwards (Mr Thomas excluded).

Also the new lad on loan from Chelsea - Cork - was absolute quality. Stood out a mile - very similar to John Terry.

Just hope we can keep it up and this formation which jan is using is confussing other teams they seem to struggle against it cant cope!! we tore birmingham apart to be honest, from the games we have played we should be top of the league!!! but i settle for 2nd place, i reckon with no pressure on the lads we might sneak into the top six easily, especially with passion and pride they are showing!!! good to see we have signed young spurs striker i think we need that to add bit more fire power, so hopefully another young hungry lad wanting to win and bang goals in!! Well that was my first game of the season and I can honestly say I have never, ever, left a Saints game with such a feeling of pride. That bunch of lads have more confidence, passion, ability and flair than any of the journeymen we have signed over the last few years and the new players slotted straight in.

Jack Cork looks an outstanding player and on last nights showing a better one than Davies.

Even Wayne Thomas came in and played a blinder.

If we can just work on our crossing then we will be a force to be reckoned with... and now we have a new exciting young striker as well...

Well done, Jan, Well done the players (Gillett was as outstanding as I always thought he would be, given the chance) and well done the fans who turned up (oh and perhaps a 'well done for now' to Rupes as well).

WOW!! What a game - and the atmosphere was brilliant, even though the attendance was low, which I think was a crying shame. People who didn't go have missed out on one of the best performances from Saints I've seen in a long time - I wouldn't have missed that game for anything!

It's great to see players playing with passion and flair and, I must say, quite a lot of skill for such a young team. And it's also great to see a lot of British players instead a team full of foreigners.

This kind of result (and more importantly the performance) gives the players and fans a lot of confidence going forward and whilst I'm not going to predict a play-off push so early in the season, I do think the sky's the limit.

I hope we can stay as injury free as possible but at least we know that we have necessary cover in most positions now to cope.

It was great to see Thomas doing so well - keep it up Wayne and the rest of the team. 3 points on Saturday please!!! (Hey, we could finish Saturday in 5th place......!!!) LOL!!!!

Good to see a blend of youth with some experience. The positive thing is the players have a good understanding of each others games and fight for each other and the team. You only had to see the way Mc Goldrick filtered back when Stern came on and helped to give Lloyd James some protection.

I agree that no player should publicly diss the club they've left as you never know what's around the corner, so I also have no sympathty for him.

But I have to say I was pretty annoyed when our so-called fans were more preoccupied with taunting him than getting behind the team.

Saturday - the fans blasted Phillips and how did he respond??

The team learnt their lesson from that day about not conceding and not letting Birmingham have any possession. It's a shame the fans didn't learn that lesson too. I know he didn't score but we all know the calibre of Kevin Phillips and you show me any fan who knew in his heart of hearts that Phillips WOULDN'T score and I'll show you a liar. The only way to respond to jibes like that (justified or not) is to score. I'm just glad he didn't!!

Chris, you're right about consistency. It's all gonna be about what happens if/when we go 2-0 down to someone on a rainy dark Tuesday night. That's when the experience of the older lads will have to come out and bring the younger lads up to their level.

Overall I'm very happy, I've had no ribbings this morning from work colleagues so life is good..........

I am really hoping we can continue this run as I'm starting to feel very positive towards this season and feel we can get into the top 6. If this pays off for Jan Poortvliet then I can only ask saints one question? Why didn't we bring the youth's up sooner into the first team rather than relying on players who have had their day a few years back, as we could of probably reach the premiership sooner than later. I think Dave McGoldrick is only just starting to peak and will be a great asset to the club this season in getting us promotion. Svensson, well he's probably the best defender we've every had in recent years along sides of Bridge and Lud, and now he's back the team and the fans are a lot more positive. Lallana, ever since his great goal towards the end of last season, has been a great quick player for us and scored a goal to seal the victory for us. I really do hope this season is going to be an excellent season for us, and the start of a new SFC.

Why do we bother talking about Pompey. When Pompey nearly went out of the league in truth I would have been sad. No doubt most sensible pompey fans would fell likewise if it happened to us. Ther would be no banter, a void created, sure we have a minority at both clubs who want to kill each other. Yet for most it is only banter. Yet her lets concentrate on our team not others. So Pompey are bottom who wouldn't be after playing the top two clubs. I am a true Saint let's worry about our own club not someone else's

On the Birmingham City website, Alex McLeish says "we can have no complaints, and will make no excuses. Southampton were better than us in every department , scored 2 goals and deserved to be through"
Praise from the Championship favourites indeed - that says it all for me. We now have a team to be proud of - and with the support of an INCREASED APPRECIATIVE CROWD, THE PERFORMANCE CAN ONLY BETTER. As for people stating that they are staying away on principle because they don't want to contribute money to the existing board - well -that's, quite simply, double dutch! Ask Jan - he's the man - The least those people can do to demonstrate that they really "care about the club" is to attend matches and contribute to his wages. It was a priviledge to watch that display last night.

Feet on the ground everybody. If you look back at the majority of postings pre-Derby it was Div 1 here we come, now it is the opposite.
I went to Derby and remarked at the end that I'd just seen some of the best football from Saints since the first 80 minutes of the Everton home game several seasons ago. Last night there was more which was brilliant.
Saturday's performance will be interesting against an average Championship team, the like of which we've struggled against in recent seasons; the class we've shown recently SHOULD see them off but what tactics will Blackpool employ and probably other teams to follow?
Last night's attendance was disappointing but stood up well against others last night.
By the way, what's the latest regarding Big Ron (I was in his fan club c1969!)

Apart from 15,000 at Middlesbrough. No other game had any where near the attendance we had last night. Be proud!

As to the guys saying we should not beat Birmingham the first time round and would be happy with a lost result. Well, I for one was not happy with thinking or as it happen losing to them. Yesterday showed this to be right! Good result, and the biggest thing it shows. Is that with self belief, confidence and a bit of team spirit we can on our day beat anyone in this league. Emphasis on can.

We all need to look forward with passion to achive now, as the first signs are there, and it is no less what all Saints fans deserve. Still along season to go, and still a big gamble, though it just looking that this may pay off, and Saints can start winning and get promoted out of this crappy fizzy league.

Having been "cautiously optimistic" since seeing three friendlies, and now two competitive games, it is great to see the positive momentum gathering. It is disapointing that people who clearly did not attend last night still want to look for negatives. I would recommend that everyone who still has doubts to "take a gamble" on Saturday and go and watch this young, enthusiastic and truely exciting team develop. No one knows just how far they can go, but beleive me it will be a joy to watch them. So stop moaning, get behind the team and tell your mates what they are missing. If we don't get behind the lads, then guess what, the moaners will re-emerge when we are forced to sell our young stars because of insufficient revenue. Saints Forever and "enjoy the moment", who knows - Premiership within 2/3 years??

Absolutely right Mr Positive! I took my boyfriend last night, who's a Reading season ticket holder, and even he was impressed.

Talking of Reading - anyone see that they've signed left-back Chris Armstrong from Sheff Utd?? Looks like Surman (hopefully) may be staying with us for a little longer, touch wood........!!

It's not often we as Saints fans actually enjoy watching the team play, especially against the bigger teams in the league but we are slowly becoming not only entertaining but getting the results to match.

There's a long way to go and I hope we can keep consistent over the next few months to push up the table. Anything above relegation is an improvement on last year and if we build on what we have now for the next couple of years, there's no reason why we can't look to getting back into the Prem.............

People have been asking Lowe to give us our club back for a while now.

Well I confirm he's given us our club back – at least in terms of pride and passion.

The spirit is back and you've got to credit him for it, even if results will be up and down this season.

People who called Jan a Dutch Donkey are being made to look like donkeys themselves – anyone taking a passing glance at the way he organises his teams (with resources managers like Arry wouldn't touch with a barge pole) and talks about the game can see this guy is more astute than any manager we've had in years.

No questioning that it will still be a year of highs and lows, but the heart and soul is back at St Marys and our new policy is a breath of fresh air.

Don't expect smooth running and do expect some of these guys to leave us, but the proof already suggests that we've got plenty of promising youngsters ready to keep the conveyor belt running.

The excitement of thinking our club could become the source of much of England's young talent in the coming years is fantastic.

Keep the faith everyone – this is something worth sticking with long term and the amount of progress and plus signs already is proof of that, even if we will have our bad days as well.

I hope we can stop talking about takeovers now. If we can keep our running costs down and produce the goods with the young (and fast improving) team we have then we don't need a 'sugar daddy' we may just have found a 3rd way.... a way of achieving sustainable long-term success... ie without having to spend big on top class players.

The performance I saw last night, largely from a bunch of young, local, lads was far better than anything I have seen since... since well before WGS certainly, his teams were functional, effective but not pretty to watch.

Credit to Jan for the timing of his substitutions as well, we rode a bit of Brum pressure then played our way back into the game and Lallana took his goal very well (I thought he was going to go down for a penalty... I think maybe the keeper did too).

It's early days but if we can replicate that sort of form 1 game out of every 2 or 3 then we'll be safe and anything better we'll be in with a shout of the play-offs.

The future looks as bright as it ever has in my eyes.

True, God is Brazilian is a really good book, and Josh Lacey is a very good writer, but he was a bit slap dash about Southampton in places. Charles Miller played for St Mary's (Saints didn't become Southampton until 1897). Further, Miller played most of his footer for Banister Court, and was a regular in the Hampshire FA XI.
Still, your basic point is correct Leo, Brazilian football was created in Southampton. As any Brazilian football historian will tell you.
The centenary was in November 1994 by the way. The Saints board of the time, specifically Lawrie McMenamy, declined to note the connection in the programme. Although there was a piece in the Saints Magazine .
If we keep playing the way we did last night, who knows, maybe Brazil will adopt red & white stripes?

jack, I disagree mate. The positive posters on this page today are always positives. The result has brought a few new posters out but in general the consistently negative people haven't got anything to say so they've stayed away.

I heard 68% posession mentioned, I don't think I've ever seen such a high proportion to one team at this level. A 60-40 balance of play is usually really one sided.

Come on Yorkie

Give these young lads your whole-hearted support by going to SMS. They deserve it. Reserve your judgement on Rupert. You just may have to swallow your pride before too long.

Come on Saints!! Carry it on for the game on Sky on Sat!

I'm liking Jan more and more each time he speaks after a game. Get rid of BWP and Dyer, they're dead wood and can't be arsed playing for us

Now 7 days later your one of the best teams in the league. Stop being so fickle and make a juadgement further down the line. you cannot blame lowe for defeats and not credit him for your wins. If you get promoted it is down to the whole set up. if you dont, it is down to the whole set up. This is what annoys me about sains fans, they are just ready to jump on the bandwagon. You werent great against derby but u were great alst night. Its 2 performances on the back of 2 defeats. Chin up boys. PS i wish JP would play kyle davies alot better than cork and actually a saints player. USA USA
jack, I disagree mate. The positive posters on this page today are always positives. The result has brought a few new posters out but in general the consistently negative people haven\'t got anything to say so they\'ve stayed away. I heard 68% posession mentioned, I don\'t think I\'ve ever seen such a high proportion to one team at this level. A 60-40 balance of play is usually really one sided. The future is bright with this team and staff. Who needs a takeover! Well done Rupes, always thought this would work and at the end of the season I\'m hoping to be able to say told you so to quite a few mates.
The only ones posting negative comments are the ones who haven't watched the games, make your stupid points and stay away if you want, thats your choice but if you really are saints fans and used to go to games then cutting off your nose to spite your face comes to mind.
Those of us that were there last night saw the lads give birmingham a masterclass and that is no exageration

I\\\'m an anti-Lowe man, but the team does it\\\'s talking on the pitch. Great to have a feeling of confidence about each game - but take each one in turn. It\\\'s a marathon not a sprint. Even young legs run out of steam eventually.

Wrong thinking Yorkie. The attendance will have no effect whatsoever on Lowe's salary. What it will do is largely determine the success of the team. Think about it. Every 1,000 fewer fans = £500,000 or so loss of income over the season = £500,000 less to spend on players = more players must be sold and/or good players not brought in. The banks now by and large determine how much money is available to be spent on the team.

By all means have a go at Lowe - but don't delude yourself that the stayaways are hurting him - they are hurting the team. For me, that's no way for a fan to behave but that's for you to decide. Just don't kid yourself that what you are doing is in any way whatsoever helping the club in the short or long term. Get down to St Mary's, support the team and demonstrate your feelings about Lowe in another way - half time demonstrations or whatever. That is a perfectly responsible approach for a Southampton fan to adopt in this situation. Cutting off the financial lifeblood of the team is giving support to our opponents in each and every game – in effect if not in intent, your actions makes you a fan for the opposition in every game.

I sympathise with where you are coming from but its time to change your tactics mate. And you will see the best football you have seen from a Saints team in years.

Isn't it amazing thinking back to the Burley days, when week in week out, Jasmine and the other clowns were always there picking up their fat pay cheques. Burley must surely go down as one of the worse managers in our history, when under his very eyes the reserves were brimming with talent. God help Scotland!
