Hampshire have targeted South Africa coach Mickey Arthur as their new manager.
Chairman Rod Bransgrove met Arthur a fortnight ago and is impressed at how far he has taken South Africa in his three years in charge of the Proteas.
Arthur, 40, has overseen South Africa's first Test series win in England since 1965 this summer and is under contract to Cricket South Africa until March, after back-to-back series against Australia.
He would be able to increase his salary significantly with a move to England but Hampshire could face competition from Middlesex, who are looking for a director of cricket to replace John Emburey, and Surrey.
