Wotte tells Saints players to 'live like monks'

Mark Wotte has told his players to “live like monks” as they battle through a busy fortnight that could decide their Championship future.

The Saints head coach is telling his stars to forget all outside distractions and concentrate fully on a run of five games in a fortnight that are absolutely crucial if Saints are to avoid relegation.

Saints Goal Alerts straight to your mobile

That run started with victory over Cardiff at St Mary’s and continues tonight when Saints travel to face Ipswich at Portman Road.

That is followed by a game at Birmingham and then back-to-back home matches against Derby and QPR.

Wotte smiled: “Hopefully we will be spared any injuries.

“They have to really live like monks – they have to sleep in the kitchen and drink only water and very good other liquids and have proper food.

“I tell the players to send their wives to a resort and have a very good sleep.

“They must focus only on football.”

Wotte’s upbeat and jovial mood rather reflects the growing confidence in the Saints camp after two home victories in a row.

But Wotte insists his side must stay grounded as they remain mired deep in relegation trouble.

“The confidence has grown and the boys are coming in with happy faces but I am always a little bit concerned after two wins that we have to get everybody back on their toes and switched on for Ipswich away,” said Wotte.

As I have said before Mark Wotte speaks my language (well nearly) He certainly understands the gravity of the situation in hand and I feel with a bit of luck and as he says stay injury free we may survive, he certainly appears to have the stomach for the job in hand, keep it rolling Saints we are with you, regardless of what some might say.

These four fixtures, I believe, will shape our destiny.
Over the years Ipswich and St Andrews have been a Graveyard for us and in football certain things never change. Derby and QPR have good records here as well.
At last we have got the formation, mix, tactics and coach right.
It is certain that all clubs in the mix will put in extra effort in a bid to avoid the drop, we are no different.
Good Luck tonight boys, give it to them.

Well done Rupert Lowe a good managerial appointment! Relegation is still the most likely outcome but at least we are putting up a small fight. Look on the bright side the season tickets will be cheaper in division one.

Never mind them living like monks - I already am, and feeling bloody depressed.
Can't seem to shake it off - and it's beginning to affect home-life.
I need councilling - can anyone help?
Pi**ed off Yorkie signing off!

Yorkie - try unbridled optimism; I really believe that we are going to be safe (and I know it's an uphill battle) but what got me through the 'great escapes' back in the day was always believing we would be safe in the end.

Also, remembering that it's only a bl**dy game at the end of the day - people here in Liberia would love it if all they had to worry about was what division their football team was going to play in next season, rather than if they'd be able to send their kids to school, or have enough rice to eat...

Regarding living like monks, Mohammed Ali used to serially sh*g women in the build up to a title bout, and it didn't do him much harm...

Anyway, if celebacy doesn't work, they can always adopt a trick from United's book and watch p*rn on their ipods...

St Yorkie, Monks have faith, so in the immortal words of a never forgotten fan keep on keeping the froth (faith) it can only get better, or can it?

Invidia, I like to think he was joking - reality is that every time I go to a supermarket I walk through a throng of people who had one or other of their limbs hacked off with machetes during the civil war here, who can only survive by begging because there's 85% unemployment - that sounds pretty real to me!

The fascinating thing is that they all love English football, and I've had conversations here about why we went from cup finallists to relegation in such a short time. They're mostly Chelsea (cos of Drogba) or Arsenal fans, but still the knowledge is impressive.

Yes Tony in Liberia I have been around the world many times and it is truly horrible to see what people will do to others.

Sorry, Invidia, didn't mean to sound quite so 'preachy' there, but I do wonder sometimes why we take football so seriously - my wife often asks me that same question when I'm a miserable b*stard all evening every time Saints lose. When she says "it's only a game", I seriously consider divorce on grounds of insensitive mental cruelty for a few seconds - until I tell myself to cop on to myself, and get a grip.

And about living like monks - they could live like Shaolin monks - they're a bunch of real tough b*stards, we could do with some of that!

Yeah I agree Tony, my wife often says to me I don't know why you keep going to the matches, you are supposed to enjoy it, yet you come home and say never again, but thankfully my marriage has been a bit healthier lately, I usually state that I am a masochist which she then usually nods in agreement. nevertheless lets stuff those tractor boys tonight, I need an excuse to have a pint or two.

Many thanks for your kind words of encouragement to lift from depression, however if only it were as simple as that.
For once the demise of the team is not at the head of my concerns. Really I should be counting my lucky stars - good health, job, wife, daughters...but there's something missing.
Perhaps it's all to do with stopping drinking - is there such a thing as alcohol withdrawl symptom? Not considered myself as dependent - but it's hard.
Thankfully the team has picked up - or else it could have been a lot worse.
Please don't suggest getting a puppy - but I feel pretty worthless at the moment...bloody hope they win tonight!

Yorkie, do you not find sustenance in your principled stand as one of the leaders of the 'boycott SMS until Lowe is beyond' campaign? Does not the righteousness of your position give you the faith to carry on?

One thing I know about depression is that there's absolutely no point in other people pointing out your blessings, or telling you to cheer up (as if we've never thought of that when we're down) - the only thing that works is (1) concentrating on positive things in your life (maybe it's time to stop supporting Saints for a while...) and (2) trying something completely new - not a puppy - but finding a new challenge, even if its something dadft like an evening course in oriental cookery, just to have the feeling of a new perspective.

Failing that, counselling is not just for wimps!

Or, perhaps, sleep on the kitchen floor, send the wife on holiday and drink lots of water, it's supposed to be really good for what ails you!

Have you ever thought of a mistress St Yorkie, (only joking) not having a drink is taking things a bit too far, but as you say hope they win tonight, you will be on here tommorow morning with new exuberance and hope, If we lose then your pledge of not drinking might take a dive

Live like Monks !! whatever next
Now I realy am perplext.

Drink only water and very other good drinks??
Is this his plan?.. is this what he thinks??

I hope it is all tongue in the cheek..
it's safety from the drop.. thats what we seek.

It's good to have humour,
It's great to have hope..
As long as it's not us at the end of the rope!!

If living in the kitchen and eating good food..
gets them out on the pitch and in the mood!!

They must live a life of celebity..certainly no sex..

Hello Ray the Turk, there’s now more than one
Who can rhyme any Saints story under the sun

I don’t think Wotte was serious, though
‘Cos Monks don’t get paid near a tenth of the dough

That footballers get for kicking a ball
And if it were me, then that would be all

I would need to play hard without any restraints
Not to mention the glory of being the Saints!

Some days I really worry that I've got too much time on my hands...

Well done Rupert Lowe a good managerial appointment!

How can you not see that it was the protesting that hastened Portvilet's exit and forced Lowe to appoint a new manager that allowed Lowe to save face through the new manager and bring in a formation and players that the Protesters had been demanding...........

real football fans would see this correlation and either agree or keep quiet. Without the protest it is fans like you that were supporting Lowe/Portvilet's vision and headlong plunge to Div. 1
Thank God the Protesters had the vision and courage to say something before it was too late.

superbarrio....if your comment was Heavy sarcasm then i apologise........alt
hough it did allow me to get in early before other posters start praising Lowe's 'new vision'of mixing youth with experience and playing 4-4 -2.Call me a cynic but it is my belief that this 'new vision' was perhaps forced upon him by the increasing voice of protest.
