Kevin Keegan unlikely to become Southampton FC manager

The Echo's exclusive picture of Kevin Keegan The Echo's exclusive picture of Kevin Keegan

KEVIN KEEGAN is NOT expected to make a sensational return to football as Saints manager if Pinnacle’s takeover of the club is completed on time today.

Keegan met Matt Le Tissier and former Saints chairman Leon Crouch earlier this week – a fact that was confirmed yesterday following the Daily Echo’s picture exclusive.

Though a Keegan-Le Tissier ‘dream team’ ticket has got sections of the fanbase salivating, the Daily Echo understands the one-time Dell star and former England manager is NOT the number one choice to succeed head coach Mark Wotte.

It is also believed that Keegan is not 100 per cent sure whether he wants to return to professional football as a manager at the moment.

If he were to have any kind of role at the club at all, it is more likely to be in an ambassadorial capacity.

Le Tissier has confirmed he met Keegan on Monday, but it is also known he has spoken to several potential managerial candidates in the last few weeks.

For his part, Keegan is currently fighting a compensation claim against Newcastle for constructive dismissal and, if successful, he could be awarded several million – he was only eight months into a three-year contract with a salary of around £3m per annum when he walked out in September 2008.

If Keegan takes another job, it is believed it would affect his compensation claim.

And another sticking point would be his not having vast amounts of money to spend in the transfer market, like he has had at all the clubs he has managed.

Lets all calm down and accept that it is likely that we will probably have never heard of the guy before when the announcement is finally made. p assuming the take-over goes through of course!

Would it be so bad if we'd never heard of the new manager before? Who'd heard of David Moyes, Sam Allardice? Or even Dave Jones before he came to us and he did make some decent signings. Big named managers have always left us for better things. WGS made his name with us, his only credentials before that was to get Coventry relegated.

So are we saying that the Echo have once again led fans down the garden path by doing half-arse reporting?

Then the rest of the useless media have jumped on board and copied their story without doing any digging of their own?

Yes, that's what we are saying.

Pathetic.

Further more, I did find it telling that yesterday's KK story was written by "Echo Reporter" instead of Carter or Leitch.

Does that mean the sports department refused to sanction the story under their name and the Editor pushed it out to obviously sell a few more papers instead of inform fans of what's going on?

I hope the newly owned Saints will be a club that fans can trust once again.

Sadly, I don't trust a single thing the Echo report anymore. Which is a real shame as it used to be such an important source of Saints info.

Ive been saying that all along, there has been no discipline at the club since he left, with players out drinking to all hours instead of extra traning due to the poor performance on the pitch

The use of "Echo Reporter" is simply because more than one person worked on the story and the website does not support joint-bylines - unless we make brand new bylines every time reporters work together.

Suttonsaint.... I agree with you 100%.Coppell as 1st choice, if not Curbs or then WGS. Would Strachan have the required desire & motivation to push himself and the Club forward after walking out on us and going to 'bigger club' in Celtic! Lets hope for GOOD NEWS TODAY !

Hilarious. Keegan as new manager splashed all over the front and back of yesterday's paper, and now it doesn't look like its happening at all.

Desperate ploy I think to sell papers yesterday, particularly as there's bugger all jobs around at the moment and the job section is the only reason people normally buy the Echo on a Thursday.

For goodness sake let's stop living in the dream world that is that Saints are a big club that should be in the Premiership and able to attract that sort of managerial talent, we're in the old Third Division with a terrible recent history and although our new owners will hopefully bring a new injection of sanity, managerial competence and reasonable financial security to the club we have a very long way to go to recover our former glories!

Keegan will not be interested and would likely again be a square peg in a round hole. No evidence of success in his past without access to lavish sums of money and no ability to put together a team based on sound defence. Winning the occasional game 4-3 or even 5-4 is not where we should be for a sound future. He simply doesn't have the right temperament.
I like the idea of Strachan more but why on earth would he want to do such a thing - admittedly he is unpredictable so I would never say never in his case, but I still can't give it much credibility - hope I'm wrong!
No I think it has to be a highly competent British manager with some sort of track record of turning lead into gold who would rise to the challenge and be credible with the supporters not minding the inevitable budgetary restraints. Somone with his feet on the ground. Until there is a confirmed appointment let's all get real and control our flights of fantasy.

I heard that they have exhumed Sir Alf Ramsay? Apparently, le Tizz was a big fan and they plan to string him to the dug out with a system of pullies in a 'weekend at Bernies' style. That'll get the players going! Gowd bless im!!!

May I just point out that at no point in yesterday's stories did we say Keegan was going to be Saints manager.

The stories are up in full on this site (you can find them under the related links on this article), and they say that Keegan had met with Le Tissier, although the exact reason behind the meeting was unknown.

Exactly my point, the echo thinks all saints fans have no grasp of gramatical awareness-the implication was the presentation of a fact- just dont do it please. Its more commonly termed as Bu**sh**.Admit youve been found out and move on .
