Experience thin on the ground again for Saints

ANY new owners at Saints will inherit a much reduced squad compared to the one that ended last season.

Thirteen players who played for the first team under Jan Poortvliet or Mark Wotte have already left or retired since the end of 2008/09.

Rudi Skacel and Ryan Smith were told shortly after the season ended that they were being released.

Kelvin Davis, Bradley Wright-Phillips, Stern John and Jason Euell are all now free agents as their contracts expired yesterday with no new regime in place to offer new deals.

Those four departures alone have saved around £30,000 from the weekly wage bill at the club.

Michael Svensson’s contract has also expired, though he had pre-empted that by announcing his retirement from playing last week.

Nathan Dyer, David McGoldrick and Andrew Surman have all been sold in order to pay the wages at a time when the club have been unable to sell season tickets in order to bring in money during the summer months.

In addition, Romain Gasmi, Zoltan Liptak and Jan Paul Saeijs have returned to their parent clubs following the expiry of their loan deals.

Goalkeeper Michael Poke is back at Saints, though, after finishing last season playing on the winning side at Wembley for Torquay in the Blue Square Premier play-off final.

Another keeper, Bartosz Bialkowski, is also back at the club after finishing last season on loan at Ipswich.

Defender Wayne Thomas could also be fit after missing the whole of last season through injury.

All the above mentioned departures have left Saints with only 21 players on their books with first team experience.

Of that lot, only Chris Perry, Wayne Thomas, Paul Wotton, Marek Saganowski and Grzegorz Rasiak have major experience.

But the likes of Adam Lallana, Lloyd James and Simon Gillett have vitually a full season at Championship level under their belts.

Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin won’t feature in the friendly at Eastleigh on Saturday as he is currently playing for the French under-20 side in the Mediterranean Games.

This is who is currently available in terms of players with first team experience: Goalkeepers: Tommy Forecast, Michael Poke, Bartosz Bialkowski.

Defenders: Lloyd James, Ollie Lancashire, Joseph Mills, Chris Perry, Wayne Thomas, Lee Molyneux.

Midfielders: Simon Gillett, Paul Wotton, Morgan Schneiderlin, Oscar Gobern, Adam Lallana, Lee Holmes, Jake Thomson, Kyle McLaggon.

Strikers: Marek Saganowski, Grzegorz Rasiak, Matt Paterson, Jamie White.

Not too bad a team I think. Although if the semi-final of the FA Cup clashes with a friend's wedding then I doubt I'm gonna panic about decisions yet!
I don't know a lot about the division we are now in but I think our team is mostly the match of others.
Having said that we could do with Saeijs returning and possibly Liptak. I don't want to rely on Thomas and Perry exclusively. Up front isn't bad, IF the Poles want to stay and try. Not every club in the division has European international strikers. The midfield is good. Holmes, Lallana, Schneiderlin could have a goal scoring season ahead of them. Whilst Wotton and Gillet are a match for most 3rd tier teams. It comes with the nature of the position, but there will be a big change in goal. You get used to seeing the same guy for 100% of the time and then it has to be someone else. But there is no reason to think Bialkowski or Forecast cannot step up.
We still got quality in the team. That is important to me. I wouldn't want a team of old lumping footballers. It is a too often said (and perhaps inaccurate) cliche that you need to be unskilled in these divisions.

Hopefully Rasiak and Saga will be gone soon. Quite frankly I like Lloyd James, Simon Gillett, Lee Holmes and Kayne McLaggon. I'll be surprised if Lallana isn't sold next.

I've heard that Ipswich want Bart so give Poke a go in goal- he deserves a chance and played well in 3 games 2 years back.

The less said about Wotton the better

Agreed re: Gillet, Holmes and McLaggon.

However i thought Lloyd James was one of the worst players last year. He couldn't defend any traditional wingers and constantly allowed them into our box. He would then cross the ball as soon as he'd passed the half way line. 2 rows of us in the Northam Road end would just shout 'cross it' whenever he got the ball....and he did!

Where does it say it's an exclusive?

Do you actually KNOW what exclusive means?

Why are so many commenters on this site morons?

Surely if we do eventually get bought & receive an injection of cash we should see a few half decent players arriving. Those players listed don't seem too bad a squad, but we will need more experience to get anywhere at this level. We tried it last year with youngsters & look where it got us (no disrespect to those youngsters intended)

Any updates on the situation with Wright-Phillips, Euell and John?

Have any of them turned up for training this week or have they just walked?

Other than BWP supposedly signing for Crystal Palace there has been no comment about these three.

Also nothing about Rasiak or Saganowski being sought after.

Other than the savings on the wage bill if these five go, there's nothing beneficial in their leaving. It puts SFC back to the position they were in last August with the Lowe Dutch 'youth experiment'.

You couldn't make this up. The SW is save-when.

That's what we all want to know! Is someone at the Echo having a laugh?

The squad looks alright on paper, but to be fair I thought that last season and look what happend. I agree with the comment about getting JP size back, he'd be good in that league. I forgot about Thomas, if he can stay fit, he should do a job. If we can find a buyer and stop selling any more players, hopefully with 3 or 4 new players we should be ok. We need to bring in first team players instead of the usual 'squad' players we keep buying.
I think, bring Prutton back, make him captain and stick him in the middle of the park. He'll run all day, kick team mates arses when they need it and he knows the league.

If pinnicle do come back in, will we be a feeder club for spurs?

Prutton? all huff and puff, let us down badly in 05. No thanks.

Will anyone want to sigh for us? We need a new Jimmy Case, any ideas?

I agree condor. But have'nt most of the players let us down over the last few years.
Granted he aint Jimmy Case but we're in div3, and as you said who's gonna want to sign for us.
I can't think of any one else, besides Pruttons hopefully grown up a bit without being over the hill. A couple of my mates are Leeds fans and they say he's been good for them at this level.

That squad dosen't look to bad for League 1 tbh. All we need is one or two more strikers and experienced players. Did you hear on the Saints website that we have trialed Ode Thompson. Think he's around 30. More experience!

I find it exciting and want to say loudly how much I respect Mark Wotte and hope the new owners keep him on. We need stable honesty at the club and this man is rock solid with a great vision for the future of the young guys that will take us forward. He'll bring us some good talent too.

I would love to say that ODE Thompson will be quality, but for a guy that has had champions league experience, preparing to go on trial at a league one side that might not even be there in a couple of weeks, doesnt bode well for his skills as he has got older, hope he proves me wrong COYR

Yep, squad as it stands doesn't seem to grim and with a few experienced additons and maybe tempting the likes of David Prutton back, we could be fairly hopeful of a mid-table finish maybe....? As for Ode Thompson, found this on Wikipedia..
