McCarthy: We're not taking advantage of Saints

MICK McCarthy has revealed Wolves were tracking new signing Andrew Surman for three years and hopes his arrival will not be viewed as taking advantage of Saints’ off-field problems.

The England Under-21 international became the second new arrival at Molineux in the space of two days when he followed club-record signing Kevin Doyle through the doors at their Compton training ground yesterday.

Surman joined Saints as a schoolboy before steadily establishing himself as one of the most promising talents outside the top flight.

Yet the club's recent financial struggles have been well documented, with Saints' parent company going into administration back in April.

Saints will start next season in League One on minus ten points, while the proposed takeover by the Pinnacle group has also fallen through leaving the club facing the possibility of extinction unless a deal can be thrashed out with another interested party.

A transfer fee for Surman believed to be in the region of £1.2million will definitely help, but Wanderers boss McCarthy insists he has not taken advantage of Saints’ plight.

"I'm delighted to get Andrew, we've got an exceptionally talented young player," he said.

"Someone has just asked me if we're benefiting from somebody else's problems. It might be seen that way and I would hate it if that was the case.

"I saw Andrew play three years ago in a friendly when I came here to Wolves, he was playing at Cheltenham for Southampton, and I marked him down then and we followed him and tracked him.

"Finally we've been able to sign him. I'm thrilled with it, he's a good player."

McCarthy continued: "I wasn't in a position to sign him three years ago, I would have had no chance three years ago when I came here. July 2006 - that would have been a non-starter.

"The really good scouts, which we've got, go out and mark players down, have a look back through their notes and remember what they've seen, and he's one that caught my eye.

"He caught everybody's eye as well."

Surman, who is predominantly a left-sided midfielder but can also play at left-back, has signed a three-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Not taking advantage at all, they have paid a fair price for a fair player and has helped us out massively. McCarthy is one of the honest good guys in football.

If you think he's not taking advantage, then I suggest you look a bit closer at his record.

How many players has he signed for Wolves from clubs in administration now?

David Edwards, Kevin Foley, Sam Vokes, Andrew Surman..

He's a vulture.

I think that's a bit wide of the mark actually.Surman served the club well on and off the pitch, he was also always willing to front it out in media interviews after - unlike the many who took their wages and scarpered.

I agree, who would in their right mind stay when a prem club come calling. Remember this is a guy who was tipped for a very bright future and committed to us even when he could have gone a long time ago, ala walcott, mills, baird etc good luck to the lad I for one hope he does well.

I agree, a true Saint who never wanted to leave; I know him through a friend (not on speaking terms) and he has been gutted with what's been going on and wanted to stay and help us rebuild. Bottom line is we need the money and it is a good price...

Drew needed to move on. He's 22, played well for 4 seasons in the Championship and deserves a crack at the top level. I thought it was a fair price.

I think 1.2million is a cheap price for a young talented player given the correct guidence he will be a great player for wolves but such a shame he has to leave saints behiend and will be sadly missed as he was a local loyal lad with a good attitude and work rate, all the best to him.

I agree its cheap however its quite expensive for a league 1 player, I know he has played in championship but I dont think we can realistically expect big fees for our players anymore. Glad you are not against him either and I too wish him luck

Sorry 'forever a saint' but did you watch him play game in game out last season? I did and myself and those in the stand around me all believed him to be one of the players who put in 100% effort every time he played. Fair play to him, he held on as long as he could, who can blame him for moving his career on when most in his position would have done so long before now. Good luck Drew!

Astute might be a better description.

Tottenham are a team that did similar with West Ham and Leeds – picking up players of quality on the cheap, using them well and, usually, selling them at a profit:
Defoe, Robinson, Dawson and loads more I forget.

Good luck to them and good luck to McCarthy, who I've always seen as a very dignified, honest guy who has been treated unfairly in previous jobs (ROI in particular)

Pity we could not take advantage of some other clubs problems. Wolves used their 'loaf'! Wonder when the idiots who run Saints will do the same?

I dont think there is anything wrong with moving to a premier league side. But I think he is severely misguided if he thinks wolves are a big club they are a proud club with a great past but not at present. Also if you think surman left to help saints out you are really mistaken he has left to further himself and that is without doubt. Also keeping kelvin would be more of positive thing as a saints fan.

I tottaly agree, i have always said if i was good enough to paly for southampton and as a fan, my heary lies with southampton and southampton only, i jsut couldnt get my head round why Surman would want to move away from a club who guided him through to what he has become today, he is a premier league player, but as a true saint, i certainly wouldnt of moved, and about kelvin davis, we should keep hi mat all cost, if it wasnt for him, we would of got relegated before chrismas, but good luck drew!
