Stern John makes surprise return to Southampton FC

STERN John has made a surprise return to Saints – and told Mark Wotte he wants to earn a new contract.

The Trinidad & Tobago international is out of contract and spent the back half of last season on loan at Bristol City.

However, after not securing a deal there, the striker, pictured, has made a shock return to Staplewood where he has been training with the first team with the aim of earning himself a new deal.

Saints boss Mark Wotte said: “Stern John is training and I had a chat with him.

“He seems really keen on trying to stay at Southampton.

“He has to become fit because he didn’t do a lot in the summer so he has to be fitter.

“If he’s fit then I think he can have some friendly games to prove himself.

This is good news. Stern would score an absolute truck-load of goals in Div 1.

Not sure we'll be able to afford his wages though and expect he'll be off as soon as someone from the Championship comes knocking.

Good on him though.

This story was taken straight off the official site... If you read that it says that wotte has told him it would involve a substantial pay cut...

At least we have an experienced striker now, i agree here come the goals as long as we plug the holes in the back 4, but great news, as said above will do really well in L1, thanks Stern you`re a real Saint :-)

This is great news! Saints need an experienced striker capable of banging in 20 plus goals in a season. If Wotte can get him fit I would play him.

This is of course if the take over goes through soon.

I just dont think Rasiak has it in him to play for us in League 1, I dont think it would harm his career to score 30 goals next season for us but just cant see rasiak putting any effort in and having any sort of commitment. Would love to see it though, john and rasiak up front in L1 that would be undefendable

Good news this, he would be great in LG1.. I hope its loyalty and not last resort and he puts effort into it, if so, he could be the one to score the extra goal which gets our 10 points back

I also hope kD waits a bit longer before signing for WHU..

I wonder if we'll keep hold of BWP and JE if so, when the deal goes through we could a force to be reckoned with in LG1.. Plenty of goals!

Just hope today is the day the deal is sealed!

You cannot beat having more options on squad. Hopefully he is motivated and could excel in this lower division.
He scored well in the 2008 season. It is worth remembering that he didn't go on loan immediately in the 2009 season. As only fans, we don't know if his departure was solely due to money issues or if he didn't impress Poortvliet & Wotte in August & September. No league goals in 4 starts and 3 sub appearances wasn't it?
We do have another striker on trial. If a takeover deal is done quick and Wotte stays, could sign.

St.Stubb says...
1:15pm Fri 3 Jul 09

I have been banging on we need Stern John back for ages. Now someone buy the club and lets crack on with preparation. Stern is an ideal player in League 1 big, stronge, experienced and knows where the net is. Could even play a youngster to play off him. We just need an owner and a defence.

Parksey says...
1:25pm Fri 3 Jul 09

This is decent news, particularly with McGoldrick and Surman having now gone, and many of the other mercenaries not exactly having pledged their allegiances so far.

John should be a decent asset in League 1, provided whoever eventually buys the club is actually prepared to pay his wages.

why does Stern John have to PROVE himself.....its not as if he's a nigerian trialist who weve never heard of!!!!

If anything, I think Wotte has to prove HIMSELF....I heard from Drew Surman that NONE of the senior pros last season wanted him in charge...they had no respect for him or his coaching methods....

on th eother hand...
SJ would score 20-30 goals in League One.....get the takeover sorted and sign him....

Nothing wrong with proving your fitness. I think next season we will have to be lean with our squad. I cannot see new owners splashing the cash - not after having to pay off mortgages early because of the administration.
Signing players is an artform. And a relatively modern part of the game. For years we just picked the best local amateurs and made them cheap professionals and played them if they were good enough in training. For the last 20 so years it is all about signings.

Hughes, Kanchelskis, Ripley, McCann, Delgado, Pahars (end of career), Idiakez, Viafara, Euell etc. all "great for us, if only we can get them fit"
