Markus Liebherr’s bright new era at Saints has got off to the best possible start – by tying captain Kelvin Davis down to a new three year contract.
The Daily Echo can exclusively reveal that Davis has rejected a move to Premier League side West Ham in favour of extending his stay at St Mary’s.
Liebherr’s team wasted no time after their acquisition of the club in ensuring the reigning player of the season and crowd hero put pen to paper on a three year contract with his previous deal having expired at the end of June.
The signature laid down a marker of what is to come in Liebherr’s control of Saints.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with the Daily Echo, Nicola Cortese, the man responsible for selling Saints to Liebherr and then conducting the deal said: "He (Liebherr) is completely into it already, he is already looking forward to July 18 and the Ajax match when he will come and fly his friends in and take them round the stadium to show his new company to them.
"He is a very passionate person and if you can attract his passion about something he is 100 per cent passionate."
See today's Daily Echo for the exclusive interview with Nicola Cortese and more on the incredible news that Kelvin Davis is staying at Saints.

Can we now hold onto Stern John and Jason Euall? I am really excited about the new season now. A lot of the teams in league 1 have average attendances of less than 8000 so we must make SMS a fortress and fill it every home game, that's the least we owe Mr Liebherr.

Why do you think Kelvin stuck it out so long?! He knew something would come along just waited and waited as long as he could like a true Saint would do.
He's a first class goal keeper with an immense level of ability, so at the end of this season coming you post on here again and say that Kelvin Davis is 'not that good anyway' when we're top of league one with a plus 60 goal difference.

Hey guys whats the story with Surman refusing to play while demanding a transfer to a Championship or Prem Club. I see mark Wotte told Mick McCarthy to take a flying leap offering only half a mil Good on him. Shouldn't Surman have to play if he is on contract or is their some silly clause allowing this behaviour. Maybe our Kelvin could give him a word or two about loyalty. I understand the will to play in a higher league but if you are on contract you must honour it and play or pay.

Worst news I have had all summer. Davis is useless he took Sunderland Down almost single handed, Took us down, and cannot kick out of his hands. "I always said that League One football doesn't scare me" Well Kelvin thats because its where u belong at your standard. Please tell me its just a dream.

Due to all the uncertainty during the takeover he was just ensuring that he could feed his family like anyone else on here would do. The minute he knew that the clubs future was secure he made, what I consider to be very brave decision. I, like the majority of fans at SFC, are glad that you are staying Kelvin. COYRs!
To those morons making negative posts about Kelvin will you please tell me why he was player of the year last season? Because he not only had a fantastic season but he motivated and pushed the kids along and remained loyal to the club. He has obviously strung out the West Ham move for as long as he could to give the club every opportunity to keep him. I run a fairly large company which is successful because we employ people with attitudes like his. We have developed our recruitment processes to ensure we weed out people like you early on. We don't need negative, small minded non team players and nor does Saints.

He didn't refuse to play he asked not to play in a couple of games and has expressed an interest to move. The club can force him to play but if he is only concerned about not getting injured and his heart isn't in it then it is better to play someone else and keep him out.
He is in my opinion a better player than Surman and younger so we are definitely not going to accept anything less than £1m for him. More like £2m or £3m.
He has a lot to thank the Saints for though and is a local lad so I would be very disappointed in him if he really and truly wanted to go this year without helping us get out of this division.
