Hants set for talks with Simon Jones

Hampshire are considering offering former England fast bowler Simon Jones a pay-as-you-play deal for next season.

Jones, one of the heroes of England’s 2005 Ashes triumph, was wanted by former Hampshire captain Shane Warne before leaving Glamorgan for Worcestershire two years ago.

The 30-year-old was outstanding in his first season at New Road, helping Worcestershire win promotion to the first division of the LV County Championship with 42 wickets at 18.02.

But he has not played since suffering the second major knee injury of his career last August and is out for the rest of this season.

Worcestershire have decided not to renew his contract and Hampshire coach Giles White last night confirmed he will be meeting with Jones next week.

White said: "He’s got an excellent record so we’ll have a chat with him during our Championship match against Warwickshire."

You have to feel for Jones who has had a rough time with injuries. A pay as you play agreement would suit both sides. Jones would have the motivation to get fit (again), and Hants may get a few games out of him. In the right conditions he is a wicket taking bowler.

If he can get fit we could do with him back with England as well as Hampshire. A key figure in the 2005 Ashes win.

Simon, get yourself a nice pad down here, get some of that Solent air in your lungs, enjoy all our fantastic County has to offer, and you will be the force you once were.

Well worth the gamble Mr Bransgrove, with all these finals coming up its hard to keep track, but hcdajfu next season without a doubt.

C'mon you Hawks!
