NEW signings Papa Waigo and Radhi Jaidi put themselves in contention to start against Yeovil this weekend after coming through last night’s reserve match strongly.

Both men started their first game in a Saints shirt in the 3-2 win against Swindon’s second string, with Waigo playing the full 90 minutes and Jaidi lasting 80 before being substituted.

On-loan Fiorentina striker Waigo enhanced his chances of lining up against Yeovil at St Mary’s on Saturday with a well-taken goal, while centre-half Jaidi put in a stout performance at the back.

The pair were introduced as late substitutes in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Charlton, but Alan Pardew wanted them to get a game under their belts before handing them their full debuts.

Both have now achieved that and will be firmly in the thoughts of the manager, who was watching from the sidelines last night, ahead of this weekend’s important League One clash with the Glovers.

Reserves boss Stewart Henderson said Waigo had come through last night’s encounter well.

The 25-year-old played up front with Matt Paterson, before being moved out wide towards the end of the game.

“He had his little moments,” said Henderson.

“It was quite a difficult game – it was quite windy and it was a difficult surface, but he did okay.

“I think he will take a wee while to find his feet with the pace of the game, but he took his goal well.

“It was a high-tempo game and he had little flashes, particularly in the first half, where he had one or two good moments.

“He needed to play and to get a game, because I imagine the last time he played was a wee while ago.

“He got 90 minutes under his belt and that will be important for him.”

Former Bolton and Birmingham defender Jaidi, whose protracted free transfer was finally rubber stamped after his work permit came through last week, partnered Olly Lancashire in the heart of defence.

Henderson said he was pleased the imposing 34-year-old centre back was finally able to get a good run out.

“Radhi is strong, experienced and uncompromising,” said Henderson.

“He did well and he did what he had to do.

“He defends well and he is very strong in the air – that’s his qualities.

“Radhi has been training very hard since he arrived here and I think it was very important for him to get the game under his belt.

“He would have got through 90 minutes, but I took him off after 80 and he was absolutely fine.”
