ALAN Pardew faces an early selection dilemma ahead of Saturday’s crunch St Mary’s clash with Yeovil.

The former Glovers winger must decide whether to start new signing Papa Waigo out wide or as a central striker as his side look to notch their first League One victory of the season.

The Senegalese striker, main picture, proved his fitness with a 90-minute run out for the reserves at Swindon on Tuesday night in a performance topped off with a goal.

His pace and skill will be invaluable to Saints’ cause but, assuming he hands Waigo a full debut on Saturday, Pardew must now decide where to try and utilise that.

The Saints manager has said he has an open mind as to where he will field Waigo, who scored two Serie A goals for parent club Fiorentina in February and March 2008.

He was clearly looking at options against Swindon as Waigo started the game up front but then moved out wide later in the match.

Waigo was introduced as a late sub at Charlton last weekend, playing out wide on the right.

But on that occasion Pardew had changed his formation to a 4-5-1 to try and get a result at The Valley, a tactic that proved successful.

At home against Yeovil in a game Saints really need to win – the Somerset side have drawn three and lost five of their last eight league and cup outings – he is far more likely to play a more attacking formation, probably changing back to a 4-4-2 or a variation of it.

That would allow Pardew the option of either fielding Waigo out wide or in partnership with Rickie Lambert as a striker as Saints bid to claim their first League One win at the eighth attempt.

If he chooses to utilise Waigo’s pace out wide, it would mean Pardew almost certainly starting with Lambert and Marek Saganowski in attack.

When you take those two and then add Waigo and probably Adam Lallana as an attacking quartet, there are not many teams in the third division that could even dream of boasting such experience and talent.

Other wide options would include either Joseph Mills or Lee Holmes on the left.
