Southampton ready to step in to host 2018 World Cup matches

SAINTS could step in to try to host 2018 World Cup matches at St Mary’s if Portsmouth fail to deliver their stadium plans – according to Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese.

As part of England’s bid to host the 2018 finals, city councils have been invited to press their case for inclusion in the bid package and hopefully to stage games.

Click below to see a video of today's headlines in sixty seconds

The bid requires a south coast club and Portsmouth have been put forward, promising a 40,000 seater stadium to replace Fratton Park as their potential venue.

As Portsmouth currently don’t have that ground, there has been some consternation that St Mary’s was not suggested before the deadline for applications passed.

Cortese says that was not the fault of the people currently running the club but insisted he would still try to get the city council to push the St Mary’s case if Portsmouth can’t deliver their new ground.

He said: “The bid application needs to go from the city council and for that reason it wasn’t done.

“There were a few deadlines down the road which the city already missed but we expressed to the city council our wish to make up the possibility of being a host for 2018.

“We need to wait.

“The 2018 bid of England needs to be supported by a host in the south so it’s Portsmouth on it and whether they can get their act together remains to be seen. If they can’t we will see."

Great news Pimpey have no hope in hell of building a new stadium in time or staving off relegation. They can't even fill there ground as it is.

We however can get 20,000 for games such as Yeovil and have top facilties which the England team has used before a no brainer really.

If we do get it it can only go towards raising the profile of the club on the world stage.

Come on Nicola make it happen

The city council should know that they are there to serve. If they fail to meet such deadlines and promote such events for the city someone gets sacked. Local governments in many countries stand and fall on large sports events. As well as football the local council should be thinking which world stage events could come to Southampton. Our local city Hamilton hosts major V8 street motor racing event.. grabbed as bigger cities baulked.. wow what an event.
Saints FC could host an exhibition base ball game out of football season with top us sides or something much bigger .. like Waikato Rugby Team playing a local side haha whatever..but
never wait for it to come..
go an get!
Good Luck Nicola

Thank god for Cortese!! I hope it's not too late...but then after Pompey get relegated i'm sure the new stadium will be the last thing on their mind!

It just shows this club has such massive potential with the right investment and the right people in charge. I reckon over the next ten years this club provide the new owner with a big return on his investment.

We cannot knock the council (yet). The old club was in such an apocalyptic mess it would have been madness to put the ground forward.

That has changed - and certain other clubs can no longer be complacent about being the only viable venue.

With a modest capacity like St Marys compared to some other potential venues, there won't be any seats for fans after FIFA's corporation ticket allocation will there..?

If the stadium is good enough for concerts. England games before Wembely was rebuilt. Premiership football. World cup rugby in the south. If the stadium is preset, then the council need to take a very serious look at themselves!

Thank God for Cortese!

more seats = more money.

any by then we will be back in premership anyway

BenJovi says...
11:25am Tue 22 Sep 09

This is in 9 years time which gives us ample time to get back in the Prem. Heck we might even have increased our ground capacity by then. Who knows whats gonna happen between now and then but I cant see the filth being a big club then.

Saint_John says...

The skates have no chance of building a new ground the Fake-Dr just does not have the money. If you read the blog he has taken out a loan to buy the club and the repayments are £5M a year which is twice the amount we were paying in Mortgage payments on St Marys. And that was described as a millstone.
.
Come on the Echo get the City Council into action and get that application in. We can steal the bid from our fishy friends.
.
p.s. I hope all good Saints fans are reminding our friends down the road that 9 YEARS AGO this Saturday (26 Sept 2000) the attendance figure for a First Team game at **** Park was 2,731.
.
They can all act as ball-boys in a 40k stadium.

It will have to be extended to over 40K. The stadium has been designed so the roof can be raised, and more layer of seats put up top.
Don't know how it works, but I think it extends to 45K

St Mary's can be expanded on three sides, the Chapel, Kingsland, and Northam. The Itchen cant be built on as it stands; it would need to be pulled down and a bigger stand erected in its place. However the three other stands have been built to allow capacity to raised to around 50,000 which would be more than enough to be the largest stadium in the south outside London. Portsmouth have not been able to find a stadium site to build on even assuming they had the money to put one up; horsley island floods during spring tides apparently!!, which was a perferred site to them; so they will be rotating FP through ninety degrees to expand though i dont know wether they will be able to attain the minimum capacity threshold of 40,000 laid down by FIFA.........its great being a saints fan!!!....TOP 10 FINNISH!! KTF.!

Condor Man says...
12:26pm Tue 22 Sep 09

after the cup final it was suggested we could increase to 40,000, which is the minimum capacity required for a World Cup. At the moment only Anfield, Old Trafford, Villa Park, Hillsborough, Elland Road, Eastlands, Stadium of Light, St James's Park, Stamford Bridge, The Emirates and Wembley are big enough. Do they need another stadium?

Crowds says...
12:35pm Tue 22 Sep 09

Pretty sure i remember that our stadium can be expanded to 48,000 i believe a figure of 1mil per 1,000 seats was the figure. though that was a few years ago im not sure what it would be now.

Though the Council/Governament would allocate us these funds....

We've hosted international in Hamilton Waikato (Pop 131000) for some time in a stadium of 30000 capacity. Rugby World cup games get spread around the country with the lesser teams being based at smaller cities. This gives the town a great chance to show off hospitality. The hosting town often adopts their visiting team and temporary fans flock in and give them a big cheer.
Nice.
Any idea which team SFC may host or is the plan just for a game at SMS.

All together now..."Fratton Park aint falling down, poor old Pompey!" They got 17,000 for their last game, 3 grand less than us. How would they possibly fill a 40,000 stadium? It's no longer the size of Krapnottarf excuse that stops them getting more than us. Oh happy days.
SW huge what. Exactly, they're gonna try and build a huge what?!!

With P*mpey out of business (& a superstore + car park built on their current site), I strongly suspect the excellent facilities at St. Marys will provide the only possible south coast option for a 2018 World Cup venue (Brighton's new ground clearly won't be big enough).

just read this... we're 5th richest club in England. So if the following is the "accurate" list of clubs, with good ownership you could see the future premiership table looking similar.

thoughts?

Man City
Bolton
Everton
Tottenham
Southampton
Aston Villa
Hull City
Fulham
West Ham
Portsmouth

(Does not include big four due to debt ratio)

I thought (and read) that St Mary's had already been included in the world cup bid, months ago???
.
Some of the council need to be sacked, it's as simple as that. So inept they couldn't even put St Mary's name forward. And it has nothing to do with the club turmoil, as someone would always own it, so it would always be available, even if Barclays owned it.
.
Seriously p!ssed off about this. Pathetic.

Saints are not a rich club, they are owned by a rich man.
Bear in mind when you read the rubbish on tabloid back pages (and a good deal of it is rubbish at the very best), that Mr Liebherr has demands on his income other than Southampton FC - and no obligations to the supporters or the city other than those he cares to adopt.

It amazes me that St Marys is not the leading contender out of the two cities. All that needs to happen is for an extra tier to be built on one or possibly two of the stands- job done. Why on earth the city of Portsmouth would ever need a 40,000 capacity stadium anyway defies all logic. Even when they were doing well in the Premier League they often didn't sell out the ground they have now which is half the size!!Nice to see that through all the strife recently, SFC has always and will always be considerably the bigger club and that's a simple fact.
