Saints plans hit by injury

SAINTS could face a switch back to 4-5-1 this afternoon with David Connolly and Adam Lallana set to miss the trip to Northampton.

Both players are struggling with injury and are not expected to play in the second round FA Cup tie.

Saints are already without Kelvin Davis, who sustained a groin injury in Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Hartlepool. Neal Trotman is also out with a one-match suspension, while Jacob Mellis is not being allowed to play in the cup by his parent club, Chelsea.

Hopefully we have enough quality in the side and this may give the likes of Paterson, Holmes and Mills a chance. Probably best not to risk two of our best players anyway.

A great chance today to give some of the fringe players a chance, may even unearth another Saints gem..
Would be good to see Mills and Holmes down the left. Just a shame Jake is still on loan... Still hope Papa starts and rules the game. Why not give Saga a go?... Put his lasy **** in the shop window and Northampton may offer him a contract if they get stuffed.
Come on Bart we are all behind you, step up and fill KD's boots.

It is a good chance to see just how good the rest of the squad is, it would be nice to get through to the next round first time but I wouldn't mind a replay!

The boss said on the saints website that he will be giving chances to some of the new entrants .. a chance to prove their willingness to play winning football and score goals.. he specifically said he didn't mean the old hands like Perry and Wotton so we really could be seeing a new look side today... I thought about the way Pards has been favouring speed and hard work but leaving out those that haven't performed... a lot did really well beating Bristol City Res's so maybe we'll see some young fellows in action with a strong bench ready to bail us out if need be. A great chance: Haven't a clue how far he'll go so I'll go as far as I can imagine.
If Holmes doesn't get a run on I guess it's all over for him at Saints.
I'd like the young ones to start with the faith that the regulars can pull this back quickly if they have too.
(this is the mad extreme not a real selection.. but it does show some depth coming through.

PS in reality I would expect Martin to start and Molyneux Preen & Argent to make the bench.

replay? no way. We will already play 53 games this season- not including progress in both cups and or reaching the play offs. Man Utd won't play many more games this season and they have a far deeper squad.

The squad is big enough not to risk players. We should win this one, though we have a rep for going out to lower div sides. This is a new era and I believe we will win this one.
We can afford to give one or two younger players a run out. We are going to have to use depth of squad over the next few months. let's see how a couple of youngsters shape up. he intimated it was time for some of the young players to shape up. Surprise inclusions maybe Lancashire or Martin. For one maybe a last chance to impress and for the other a first.
Expect to see several youngsters go in january, think we will lose Chris Perry to, which I think is a shame. Against the likes of Brighton and Norwich he would have been a plus. But he obviously doesn't suit the manager. Expect Trotman and Antonio to sign. Plus a striker. I doubt a midfield player unless he ships a couple out.
Interesting times, lots of surprises and good things. Hope today is one of them.

Did anyone see the story behind Michael Pokes not coming back to play for Saints... the FL said we weren't able to call it an emergency because we had Forecast coming back but the personal side for Michael is charming and I wish him well.
This from The Gulls site.. which would have been nice to read in the Echo too.

Poke, who has been in fine form for the Gulls, said: "With due respect to Southampton, I would rather be playing games, if I'm honest.

"I didn't want to go back and sit on the subs' bench. I would rather play at Torquay."

An additional factor was Poke's domestic arrangements.

He, partner Leanne and new baby daughter Molly have just moved into rented accommodation in Paignton.

"We've just sorted out an apartment and got settled, so when this came out of the blue, we thought we would have to move again," he said."

(sounds like he'll be picked up by Torquay when his contract runs out in Jan).

Papa has had chance to get to speed with the english game, probably still be caught offside occasionally but he knows where the goal is,hope he starts and martin makes an appearance .
Only right to rest connolly if in any doubt, but stresses how light we are in that department. Antonio alongside Ricky ? I would. Imagine the space that would create for lambo. Some cute through balls from midfield and he would run riot.
Interesting times.
