Dean Wilkins compares Morgan Schneiderlin to Zinedine Zidane

Morgan Schneiderlin Morgan Schneiderlin

SAINTS midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has been nicknemd ‘ZZ’ by assistant boss Dean Wikins – because he wants the Frenchman to try and emulate the legendary Zinedine Zidane.

Wilkins has been impressed by the way Schneiderlin has added an extra element of aggression to his game in his second season in English football.

He believes the player shares many qualities with World Cup winner Zidane and is trying to boost the midfielder’s self belief.

Ahead of Saints’ trip to seventh placed Walsall tomorrow, Wilkins said: “I refer to him as ‘ZZ’ at times and he says ‘no, no, no’ but I think he has to have that belief that he can hit those heights and reach that level.

“We’re all going to try and bring that out in him.

“It’s up to him to try and get that self belief as well.

“He’s got that ability to manipulate the ball with both feet, with the inside of his foot, with the outside of his foot.

“However much pressure he’s under he’s got that ability to get out of a tight situation and Zidane is probably the best there’s ever been for doing that.

“We have a bit of fun with that, but there’s a serious side to that as well.”

I think the new coaching staff has a lot to do with our up turn in fortune. We have winners that want winners.

Don't see the ZZ in Morgan yet - but he does have kick feet - I would really like to see him shoot more and more accurately - something to work on in training?

He is a good footballer - whether a season in League 1 will make him I'm not sure. He would fit the mould of a young player being groomed for greater things next season in The Championship - we can only hope it's with Saints!

Hope he's as good as Deano thinks!
Good article Echo.
Boys clearly got skill but is'nt it funny that its clouded by self doubt?
Personaly I would encourage him to have more pops at goal from long range espescialy on the occasions that the pitch is Skiddy.
Couple of goals could Jump start his season!

Crikey he must be good in training, as I have not yet seen it on the pitch during games.
I hope we do hold onto him, as he will improve I am sure with age and experience, and as others have said, will probably be more suited to a better standard of football such as the Championship or premiership.
I think if he jumps ship too soon, he may just become a bigger clubs substitute, so there is hope for us I suppose.

ZZ I don't think, but Morgan is becoming a key player to our squad and was one of the top performers against Wycombe.
With regards to his shooting, if you saw his miss away at Oldham, you would realise why he no longer shoots !! He has no confidence !!

Or launching himself into Row G like Monsoir Eric Cantona :-)
Look at the article on the O.S.and by his own admission he needs to get a bit of Grit from somewhere to adapt to the more physical nature of the English game at this level.
Think Jason Dodd will sort him out!
Failing that Ray The Turk who is seventh dan black belt at poetry should have a word!!

Are you sure that he's not referred to as "ZZ" because he is always dozing off! Security words "turn-them" - let's hope that is what the Reds do at Walsall.

Schneiderlin is a good player, personally, i think he's having a bit of a football culture shock... alot of people ask why they havent seen alot from him, based on the fact that he is playing for the french u21 side, but people have to remember, that the french leagues are VERY different to the football league, the football league is much more physical, its about tough tackles and scaring strikers out of the game... in the premiership, its all about step overs and fancy play... well, fancy play doesnt get you far in these divisions if you dont have grit. THIS is why Schneiderlin should stay with us... he has great technical play, but lacks confidence, with Dean Wilkins (a fantastic coach!) and Doddsy, as well as Pardew, he will gain that confidence... and he will get better at tough tackles with time, and through the tutoring of the DODDfather! he will become a tough tackling grit midfield player, and have the technical ability to play the passes in that central position.. he wont learn how to battle for the ball in the same way if he was training in a premiership reserve side.. but if he stays with us, with our coaching team, he will learn that side of the game.. and whether he stays with us, or goes elsewhere, he will be prolific.

good point Yorkie, the new coaching staff is a big reason we're doing so well, taking the oweness of of one person and not simply putting it on "others" but experienced and dedicated coaches who know the game.
Great!

I'm a big Pards fan and don't like to criticise individuals. I'm not a knocker but have to disagree with Dean Wilkins and wonder what Pards thinks? Morgan is more zzzzzzzz than Z.Z.
I had the note paper out watching the last game and 8/10 of his long balls went to the opposition. He made one really good hard tackle and suddenly he's Zidane.. BS!!

I hope and believe there is heavy pressure from Pards on the mid field to start dominating. It's not coming at the moment.

Pards seems to like Llloyd James terrier style and he's trying to fit him in now Murty is back.. trouble is he's no right winger.

If we are to play 442 properly it should be done with two strikers we have them (tick the box) 2 Backs (tick) two halves (Tick) a right wing from Papa or Ants (Tick) A left wing (big X) a play maker (big X) and a busy worker (tick)

James must me a contender at the momenet for Morgans spot as should Adam be if he could stand up and stay in position and not get so far forward goal hanging.

Maybe I'm talking rot but Adam is no winger for me I'd have him off the bench as a striker (he's our apprentice striker to David and Rickie) He'll be a top striker for a top prem team and England one day.

Some how we have to get the Mid creating and holding the ball up.

I look forward to Pards making some changes in window. Get a real left winger and a real play maker for the middle, another left back and a fast centre back. If we have to sell some so be it I won't cry as I have total faith in Pards.. he done brilliantly with what he has.
This from me only comes because as a team or business gets better and better you must always seek to go up another level looking to the future.

Now team get out there, cream Walsall and I'll stick the dummy back in me fat gob.

Based on the last game I'll say brace for a loss to Walsall but we are capable of playing so much better.

I reckon we need a defensive midfielder. Also you`re right about Morgan,he is a talented ball player but he doesnt seem to put our forwards through on goal very often, which is what we need from him and no goals from him aint good either, dont get me wrong i thought he had a good game on tuesday but he needs to impose himself more.

Don't agree Dan put a guy with eleven goals on the bench?
Quickest way to lose Adam in January is bench him.
As I said elsewhere, because we didn't have a chance to sort the team before the start of the season. The first eight games saw us with 2 defeats and six draws.
So really we started on around -20 points not -10.
We are playing catch up. The only way we have of reaching the play offs is to attack. We have to go for it and can't sit back.
This is part of the reason why we are so vulnerable at the back. We have to go at teams.

Where does he spend most of his time... in and around the box goal hanging... the young fella has a natural instinct for goals.. he wants it.. let him have it but is he ready to start up front ahead of Connolly or Lambert? no because he doesn't have the accuracy "yet" but will. I'd love to see him up front.
We are desperate to get a really fast top notch end to end left wing that wins the ball runs it up and gives us crosses or takes it in.
When we get that winger stick Adam in the box taking turns with Rickie and Davie... that way we'd get more goals out of them all as they would be competing.

It's pure bs from me as I'm happy with Pards but no one player is bigger than getting the balance right and the balance is not right as we miss 10 chances a week at present.

Hi dan.
It is hard for me to comment because like you i am abroad. I don't get to see every game and I just fel overall he has done better than most this season.
I just feel he is an attacking midfield player which is not a bad thing. What we lack is a defensive midfield player who reads the game.
Like i said above we have to push forward, we have no choice we have to really go for the win every game. otherwise we will finish mid table. I am not complaining about 23 points out of 33 that betters most in this division, leeds apart, their form is a notch above everyone elses.
Went on teh Walsall web I think this thing with Hutchins is more geeing his own players up. You knwo the sort of thing this is a big club, big players, we have to be up for it and you fans need to be there.
They had over 8000 for leed sin august but their gates average around 3.500. it says on their web they are expecting around 1,700 Saints fans. Be amazing support if it is true.

It's all too easy to sit in our armchairs and pontificate about team selections etc, and good fun too, but..... we don't get to see the training sessions and the team talks leading up to each game.
I hope and I'd like to think that AP and his staff select the team each week to do a job against the opposition depending on what's required and therefore I have no problems with a different team sheet each game and I've never really been a fan of the unchanged team just because it won the previous week.
So if that means even Rickie on the bench after a game he's scored a couple of times in it's ok with me if it's part of a plan and we go out to execute and win.
I don't think we can fault AP so far, occasionally we'll have an off day and maybe have to accept that we might even get beaten by a better team (on the day.)
I think by the end of the Christmas and New Year games we'll be saying the play offs are within reach and by the end of January the squad will be bigger and stronger, so watch out for even more changes from week to week.
COYR, all the best for Saturday, I hope I'll be able to get commentary this time!!

I'm not comfortable with benching Lallana (especially with the impending transfer window), and I think Morgan is quality (a goal will come). I guess until Connelly is fit again the question won't arise. There was talk yesterday about resting Ricky - with the way Papa was miffed about being brought off on Tuesday, it might be fun to see him start up the middle; Walsall will have prepared for Ricky and not Papa. If Ricky starts then I would expect the normal 451 with Wotton on for the last 20 if we are ahead.
