Saints are hoping to improve their record against League One’s top teams to keep their play-off dreams alive – starting with Saturday’s crunch clash with Huddersfield.
Alan Pardew has brought the feelgood factor back to the city as he continues to inspire good results from his side.
But if they are to reach the top six come the end of the campaign they desperately need to do better against the teams above them.
Saints have proved adept at knocking over the division’s lower teams to keep themselves in the hunt.
But if they are to leapfrog up the table they need to start winning against the teams above them, including those in the current top six.
So far this season, Saints have faced teams from the current top six on seven occasions – and have failed to notch a single win, losing four times and drawing three.
Contrast that with their record against the bottom six where they have played six, won three, drawn two and lost just once. While you would expect Saints to have a better record against the bottom sides compared to the top ones, having started the season on minus ten they need to beat those sides above them if they have serious ambitions for a play-off place this campaign.
The good news for Saints is that of the five matches they have remaining against the top six teams this season, four are at home – against Leeds, Charlton, Swindon and Huddersfield, who visit St Mary’s on Saturday. Norwich are the only current top six team Saints have to face away.
Saints’ differing fortunes against the division’s top and bottom sides is underlined even further when you look at their record against the top ten and the bottom ten.
Saints have taken a very impressive 21 points in ten games against League One’s bottom ten, winning six, drawing three and losing just one.
But, in ten matches against the top ten in the league, Saints have won just twice, drawn four times and lost on five occasions netting a total of ten points.

I am excited but apprehensive about the next couple of games. Games I think we can win, but concerned that our key players are starting to look tired and jaded. Rickie being the prime example, he looks tired now but I can't see him being rested any time soon and I think we have 6 more games in January. Really excited at the prospect of new signings in January, sooner the better I think, but have confidence in AP's ability in the transfer market. Up to now have been to SMS when I can, but finally took the plunge and my half season ticket starts Saturday. Really excited about 2010, but I hope fans remember where we were 6 months ago and can have patience while AP builds for the future. No matter how much people moan on here, I always think back to the summer and we would all have taken the position we are in now with the prospects for 2010. Happy New Year to all!

Yes Happy New Year everyone!! I'm looking at the weather forecast this morning and it sounds dreadful, so hopefully the pitch willl be covered and the underground heating be on, so Saturday's game can take place. Probably not many Div 1 games will take place Saturday though!!

I remember it being said at the time that we very rarely get a game called off due to a frozen pitch and it didn't justify the extra cost (I believe the last time we had a postponement due to cold weather was when the water hydrants froze, rather than the pitch being unplayable!). However, Saturday may test this theory to the max!!

season ticket holder wrote:Where was I? At SMS actually, I have been to every Saturday game this season, as I did last season when we were'nt doing too well. Reason I haven't committed to a season ticket before is that I cannot make midweek games due to work and family commitments. No season ticket does not always mean no fan.

realistically we can only make 1 of the play-off spots.altough difficult it is not impossible.but pardew and cortese need to dip into the transfer kitty big time to do this.im not sure there is much point in that personally.Next season we will be expected to win the **** thing and get out of this silly league and never retutn.

Many clubs spend a fortune on undersoil heating, have a perfectly playable pitch, and still can't get the game on because the health and safety brigade decide that the surrounding area is too dodgy for the fans. We had this problem a few years ago up at Newcastle, people may remember.
