Southampton's play-off bid demands no more slip ups against big teams

Saints are hoping to improve their record against League One’s top teams to keep their play-off dreams alive – starting with Saturday’s crunch clash with Huddersfield.

Alan Pardew has brought the feelgood factor back to the city as he continues to inspire good results from his side.

But if they are to reach the top six come the end of the campaign they desperately need to do better against the teams above them.

Saints have proved adept at knocking over the division’s lower teams to keep themselves in the hunt.

But if they are to leapfrog up the table they need to start winning against the teams above them, including those in the current top six.

So far this season, Saints have faced teams from the current top six on seven occasions – and have failed to notch a single win, losing four times and drawing three.

Contrast that with their record against the bottom six where they have played six, won three, drawn two and lost just once. While you would expect Saints to have a better record against the bottom sides compared to the top ones, having started the season on minus ten they need to beat those sides above them if they have serious ambitions for a play-off place this campaign.

The good news for Saints is that of the five matches they have remaining against the top six teams this season, four are at home – against Leeds, Charlton, Swindon and Huddersfield, who visit St Mary’s on Saturday. Norwich are the only current top six team Saints have to face away.

Saints’ differing fortunes against the division’s top and bottom sides is underlined even further when you look at their record against the top ten and the bottom ten.

Saints have taken a very impressive 21 points in ten games against League One’s bottom ten, winning six, drawing three and losing just one.

But, in ten matches against the top ten in the league, Saints have won just twice, drawn four times and lost on five occasions netting a total of ten points.

I am excited but apprehensive about the next couple of games. Games I think we can win, but concerned that our key players are starting to look tired and jaded. Rickie being the prime example, he looks tired now but I can't see him being rested any time soon and I think we have 6 more games in January.

Really excited at the prospect of new signings in January, sooner the better I think, but have confidence in AP's ability in the transfer market.

Up to now have been to SMS when I can, but finally took the plunge and my half season ticket starts Saturday. Really excited about 2010, but I hope fans remember where we were 6 months ago and can have patience while AP builds for the future.

No matter how much people moan on here, I always think back to the summer and we would all have taken the position we are in now with the prospects for 2010.

Happy New Year to all!

Yes Happy New Year everyone!! I'm looking at the weather forecast this morning and it sounds dreadful, so hopefully the pitch willl be covered and the underground heating be on, so Saturday's game can take place. Probably not many Div 1 games will take place Saturday though!!

If Saint's are to gatecrash the play-off spots then it is very important to beat the teams above to close the points gap and put them under pressure, and saturdays game against Huddersfield will be no different. The reality check is it won't be a complete disaster if Saint's don't make the end of season play-offs, Saint's have had an outstanding first half of the season but with postponed games due to current cup runs and suspensions/injuries the second half of the season will be much difficult, unless of course AP brings in several quality players during this transfer window? My main aim was this season to stay in this division first and foremost and though everyone is focusing on those play-offs it is also worth noting we are closer to relegation spots than the play-offs! so if (which I'm sure we won't) don't remain fully focused then anything can happen! My only concern with the games coming up is some of our players look very jaded and need to be rested and Saint's currently don't have the resources to be able to do this so it's very important AP brings quality players who will improve us during this transfer window.

realistically we can only make 1 of the play-off spots.altough difficult it is not impossible.but pardew and cortese need to dip into the transfer kitty big time to do this.im not sure there is much point in that personally.Next season we will be expected to win the **** thing and get out of this silly league and never retutn.

just as a point i never thought that Wupert ever had the underground heating connected. I remember at the time Wupert said that we had much more imprtant things to spend our money on like lining his own pockets. From memory i thought the cost to have this connected was in the region of £200,000 and that was back in 2002. what we need is an experienced CHEAP plumber ......

Whilst I would not dream of belittling Mr Sluggers ability in the Plumbing field I would be very surprised if the underpitch heating was not in fact an electrical instalation.
In my experience as a Builder I have never been asked to connect an electric blanket to the cold water mains!
However with his experience of fitting various boilers, probably both domestic and commercial I feel sure that he would have acquired the neccessary electrical knowledge to make the required connection.
Failing that I bet he has got a Mate who could!! ;-)
I would be very surprised if any electrician would attempt to charge 200K to supply and fit a plug!
Sounds more like the price to fit the whole instalation. Far too cheap if the pitch had to be dug up and relayed.
Personaly I doubt we even have underpitch heating as I would imagine that this problem would have been attended to as a matter of urgency when the new regime took over the running of SMS.
I do not believe that paying the electricity bill is a problem for the new owner.
On that subject would the last person to leave Notarfcrap Please..Please switch off the lights!
Happy New Year to all True Saints!!

There isn't any undersoil heating at SMS. I remember it being said at the time that we very rarely get a game called off due to a frozen pitch and it didn't justify the extra cost (I believe the last time we had a postponement due to cold weather was when the water hydrants froze, rather than the pitch being unplayable!). However, Saturday may test this theory to the max!!

Where was I? At SMS actually, I have been to every Saturday game this season, as I did last season when we were'nt doing too well. Reason I haven't committed to a season ticket before is that I cannot make midweek games due to work and family commitments. No season ticket does not always mean no fan.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the season ticket holder club though!

That is a very appropriate comment coming from Ron Bergundy! lol. Of course realistically we can only make 1 of the play-off spots...if we took up 2 of the play-off spots we'd have to play ourselves! lol.

If we finish 6th I'd like Charlton to finish 3rd as I think we'd beat them...then I'd fancy us against anyone in the playoff final.

I agree with the club's philosophy here. Many clubs spend a fortune on undersoil heating, have a perfectly playable pitch, and still can't get the game on because the health and safety brigade decide that the surrounding area is too dodgy for the fans. We had this problem a few years ago up at Newcastle, people may remember.

Just to confirm- SATURDAYS MATCH IS ON! I think someone may have been having a laugh with us... Ha Ha.

We definitely have undersoil heating pipes layed, but sadly that is all we do have, thanks to the dark lord and his penny pinching.

Newsnow is reporting that we are after 26 year old Portuguese defender Jose Fonte from Palace. One and a half million.... Sounds a bit steep to me?
