Bristol Rovers to offer Southampton target Chris Lines new contract

Bristol Rovers’ director of football Lennie Lawrence says he has not received any “concrete offer” from Saints for midfield Chris Lines.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a January move to St Mary’s with his contract set to expire in the summer.

And speculation has intensified after Alan Pardew revealed Saints have made initial offers for two players.

But Lawrence insists Rovers are still hopeful of tying up an extended contract for Lines to stay with Rovers and that his club haven’t received firm offers for him yet.

Full story in today’s Southern Daily Echo.

If concrete doesn't interest them, offer them some rock-salt.

Lawrences words can also be viewed as a bit of spin and trying to force a bigger fee. Bristol rovers do not have the money to offer better salaries.

I wish pardew would hurry up.we cannot go into saturday with that shambles of a team that turned up against luton.he has had months to sort out new players and get some deals sorted.i hope we dont sign lines,i was kind of hoping our ambition would be higher than this.get freddy eastwood.simeon jackson would also be great.

Ambition, this is the same manager that gambled on David Connolly, and it worked in spectacular fashion, this is the same manager that signed Ricky Lambert, our top goalscorer, the same manager who signed the no nonsense midfield leader in Dean Hammond... not to mention Trotman and antonio, yes we need improvement to our team (and quickly mind you), but trust in Pardew, he knows what players will fit in the team, and wont buy players just for the sake of it... i cant remember who said this a while back on here, but it seems fitting - ''you dont buy million pound players for injury protection''. We need some new quality players in all areas if we are going to challange for the play offs this season,
but Pards has done well so far with players he has brought in so have faith.
We may only find out who when the deals are already done !!

Give Pards his due. He knows his stuff, he has Marcus to back him and a scouting network to suss out the best talent available. Remember its the nature of the window that all the best signings come in on Jan 31 !

Let's just let Alan Pardew get on with it. He knows what we need and who he could attract. But we needn't go diving in and paying over the odds. We are probably all anxious, but we can only judge come Jan 31 and see if we think we have improved the squad significantly enough. Even then only the end of the season will we really be able to tell. So far, the strategies from the Management Team have been very good. So just lets wait and see. My guess is you will not be disappointed if you are realistic! I cannot say my S-W as it is very dirty.

Ron Bergundy - you might have a season ticket, but I bet you've also got a Masters in moaning and whingeing. Look at our run of form since October. Hammond, Lambert, Harding, Connelly. The players you've mentioned that don't cut it were all loan singings and to some degree have done a job for us. How can you question Pardew is beyond me? Are you demanding we challenge for the title this season? The majority of fans on here will disagree with you, so maybe you should have a rethink.

Also don't expect new signings to come in and make an instant difference, it will take time to meld them in, another attack on Waigo and Antonio? Makes me a bit suspicious that it is the same person with a different title, these players can be good impact subs. not sure that they should start. I am hoping AP can do the business, but I am getting a bit impatient at the lack of news or progress. No doubt the deals are being held up by agents trying to takes us for ransom.

Little muppet? well theres no need for that, also, i never mentioned Papa Waigo, but then come to think about it, if it wasnt for him, we wouldnt be talking about a cup semi final against MK dons would we? we would be talking about a loss to Torquay! Antonio was a loan signing, and who else would fit in better on the right wing and have that pace? he ran defenders ragged, Trotman is a solid defender on his day, and put in some decent performances, though admittedly, both of them have theyre off days. Also, you didnt mention Hammond? is he terrible as well?. Think before you make mindless insults, just because someone has a differing view to you, it doesnt make them a muppet.

The true Saints fans on this site are the ones who are patiently waiting for some more excellent signings, and as the window has just opened know that these things can be protracted, but if we get a couple more gems then it will be worth the wait. The gobby newbies that have recently sprung up on here are either skates on a wum trying to get a sniff of what being a financialy sound team is all about and all they can do is be disparaging and illiterate as possible, or we have the dregs who usually post on the B-anter web site which basically means you dont possess a brain cell and need psychiatric help. I think Antonio is a good signing to the end of the season, but unless he improves under saints coaching he's not worth keeping on in the championship, tougher call if we have another season in L1 but I'd like to see someone with better control/quality out on the right rather than Antonio who is a bit of a hit & miss battering ram - who isn't actually that quick when against a half decent left back.

not sure about Lines, not seen him play but he looks the right age - is he better than what we've got though in wotton/james or even gillet (if he doesnt stay at doncaster)

I think the expectations of early signings in this window are a bit high. Things will start slowly. Buying clubs will want to feel around and get a taste of what's available and try some cheeky offers to test the water. The selling clubs are going to want to bide their time, get the best money for their asset and look to see who is available to replace them once they're gone. Chill out people. We may not have played great against Luton, but we still dug out the result. There's no rush.

St.Yorkie says...

Surely if the guy is looking for a move and better money he has to be looking away from Bristol Rovers? The fact is Rickie Lambert did - and we are a much bigger club. My only concern is he good enough for next season IF we get promoted? I don't know much about him or remember him in the FA cup game of a couple of seasons ago. Sure he must be useful - otherwise why would show any interest?

kenis says...

sky are saying pericard has rejected a contract offer from carlise and will be moving to another league 1 club when his contract ends on 12th January.

will it be us? can't remember him being particularly useful when he was on loan with us before, hopefully with his stint in prison he's grown up a bit and is now focused on his football - rather than just the next pay off

what do people think? good cover/competition for Rickie or better off as a replacement for barnard/jackson so we can get one of those two?

Some posters on here should remember the old adage 'more haste less speed' Sure I would love new signings right now but being realistic it just aint going to happen and I am prepared to wait for quality (So that rules out Pericard) For me the priority is at CB & RB I would like Trotman to come back & I would like to have a look at Elliott from Coventry There were rumours in the past about Ben Thatcher Not many harder than him
In MF we need another of the standard of Hammond so if BR have one available lets get him
Up front the set would be complete if we got Jackson or Barnard
Lets face it we are looking to buy players who could do a job in the CCC and only once we are there will we be looking to buy Prem standard players
Its called a business plan

It's beyond belief isn't it. We were looking down the end of a barrel back in June, now we have hope, are one of the few teams that will buy in this window, and we have people on this site whinging because A.P hasn't bought 11 new players within 5 days of the window opening.
As far as I am awhere, the transfer window is where all negotiations have to be made. I don't think you can talk to agents, clubs and players before it opens. So it is virtually impossible to sign players on day one. Agents will also know that Saints have money, so they will hold out for the best deal for their client. So don't expect to many signing before the window moves into its second half.
Looking at where some, or at least one of the whingers on here lives, I question how they know whether Antonio or Waigo are any good or not. Trottman was awsome against Exeter, easily man of the match, and Waigo runs and chases all over the pitch. He also chips in with goals.
How many premiership teams have made signings so far this window, none I think. So get a grip, come feb 1st we will all be singing a happy tune

The transfer window only applies to transferring players permanent registration, and there are separate dates for loans, there are no rules stopping negotiations taking place and agents touting players round to clubs. Its only practical reasons that prevent deals happening quickly in a window - clubs want to wait to see if they can get better offers for players they have and/or see if they can line up replacements before accepting. Added to that the hectic festive schedule and board member availability and you have a slow start to the month.
Despite everything, it would clearly be better under any 5 year plan to get promotion to the CCC at the end of the first year, than at the end of the second. I think we have a much better chance of keeping Lallana and Schneiderlin if we get promoted than if its another season in L1

You are one of the most offensive idiots we have had on here, and someone who obviously has no business or football knowledge at all. There is a five year plan to get back into the Premiership, and people like N.C and M.L do not put plans in place that they cannot achieve. You know as well as I do that this club will be in the CCC either next season or the one after, and the Prem no later than 2014, probably earlier. So calm down and eat your rusks
i know more about football than you will ever know, the way you go on about m.l and n.c , do you know them personally????? you think its offensive because you dont agree with my opinion. this cub has money so spend it on players outside this division, not loanees or league 1 players.
Where has this littleun come from.
Dont comment please, you are doing what we take the p out of the skates down the road for.

You are, of course, quite right about everything you say, Gosportsaint.
Of course you can talk to clubs during the non-transfer window! You cannot talk to the players until their respective clubs agree. Players can only move in the transfer window.

A lot of the fans on here want to see entertaining football at St. Marys, this is why we would like to see some quality coming in now rather than later. I know we have a 5 year plan but do you honestly think if we don't go up this season we can be in the premier by 2014?? We'll still have an average league 1 team in the championship unless we start building a championship team now!

Has everyone forgotten saints are now one of the richest clubs out there? I know Pardew didn't have much time to buy players in the last window but spending only £1.3m is not gonna give you much of a chance of success. Chelsea bought the premier league.... we can buy league 1 promotion with championship players. So start flexing the credit card Pardew and sign QUALITY PLAYERS!!

I'm sick and tired of watching rubbish football. If we played good entertaining football and didn't go up this season i wouldn't mind so much!

I saw Saints for the first time in ages recently. I wasn't that impressed but then it is early days

I think we need somone who can drive from the midfield, get into the box and get a goal, I know Hammond has bagged a few but in the Exeter game he didn't look that kind of player to me.

Schniderlin is ok but everything goes sideways.

We need a box to box player who can drive us forward, particularly at home.

Antonio is nothing special, but we may as well keep hold of him he might get better

Everyone is entitled to there opinion, but that doesn't make everyone's opinion correct!

Maybe one of you moaners could actually say what you would have liked to have happened in the last few months and what you would have done to achieve a better form than won 15, drawn 3, lost 3 of the last 21 games?

You all seem happy to moan but you never have any ideas in your pea sized brains that could suggest you could have done any better!

Just cos you have season tickets and sit in the Northam end (apparently) doesn't make you any more or less of a fan than those that don't. It just means you have more time/money than others or a better location! I personally have to work every saturday which limits the games I can actually attend, doesn't mean I don't support the team through and through!

You people are just short sighted, brainless idiots who wouldn't know a good thing if it jumped up and slapped you round your ugly faces.

A true fan is not measured on the times he attends the ground, but the support he gives the team. You lot do not give support so in my mind you are nowhere near as much of a fan as others on this site.

of course i remember where we were, but that does`nt mean we have got to be stagnant and forever saying we nearly wasn`t a club! we are a rich club and should be buying players from the ccc not loanee`s to get us out of this division, with some of the players we have in the squad we will be lucky to finish in the top 12!!

We need another centre midfielder by Saturday because Morgan Scheinerlin is suspeneded. So get in Chris Lines. We need Lee Barnard up front, if Richie Lambert gets injuried we have no cover, and he would be a perfect partner with Richie. A young David Connolly. And we need another centre back and a winger like Bristol Rovers' Andy Williams.

We need a couple of players before Huddersfield at home on Saturday!

south west, what has happened has raised expectations for this season! I think we are doing quite nicely considering our position at the start. I, personnally, would be more than happy with a top 12 finish and a day out to Wembley, with all that has gone on at SMS. That is not a lack of ambition, I would take 3 Wembley trips in my stride willingly! Our owner has money because he is a businessman of some acumen, not because he invested unwisely. Look east and see what spending non-existent cash causes! We did the same and are recovering because of ML's money! We were relegated from the CCC playing the worst football I've seen a Saints side play. Our "squad" was cherry picked in the summer. The possibilities for the rest of the season are because ML, NC and AP and his staff (coaches and players) have begun to slowly reverse a club in free fall! Pre ML we were sinking fast! Yes, the football isn't Barca-esque but I think we are heading in the right direction! Give the people who have done this some time and we may be stood next to each other eating posh Chelski pies some day? ps I'm nearer 35 stone and I'll need half your seat!

Why dont people grow up.Aint we all men after all.People have a right to say what they want when they want.If people dont agree tough.I in fact love reading both sides of the story.
I myself slated Pardew early in the season as after 10 games people were saying he was doing a fantastic job but truth(in my opinion) he was poor up to then.Yes after this I think he has done a great job up to the middle of december and since then Saints have put in some poor performances(my opinion again)but have got away with it.
Anyone out there that really believes Saints were going out of the league I think are daft.I believe Saints and there debt were brought for less then 20 million.BARGAIN and thats why the German guy bought us.
The stadium would cost 45 million now to build with the land.
Now remember Saints are still 10 points off the play offs(same as the start of the season)and played over half the season and played more games then some and still only several points above the dreaded line.
We do need players in and I still think Saints will settle for mid table and a cup final and the truth is I think most fans would be happy with that.(i am)
Oh and the other thing aint it great to see whats happening down the road. They aint got a stadium to save them and Again players still not paid. The best soap opera and its great seeing that excuse of a club going down the pan.
It made my xmas.
Next season I think we will win this league though and then were on the up.

The exchange of views on this web site is always good to follow except when Saints fans start slagging each other off, notwithstanding the 'freedom of speech' argument. Anybody slagging off the club, its players, management and other personnel is not, in my opinion, a worthy Saints fan.

Pards is paid a lot of money to make the right calls when it comes to signing or releasing players. We fans are entitled to our views and it's good to express them in a positive and sensible manner. It shows our love and passion for the Saints.

The club has a difficult balancing act when deciding who to sign. We want to sign players (remember they want at least 2, probably 3 year contracts) who will be good enough for the Championship next season or the one after; otherwise you are stuck with players who are not up to the task at the higher level but won't get a better wage anywhere else. However, Championship quality players will be naturally hesitant to play for a L1 club unless they are really confident we can get promotion soon.

Trust in Pards, and in Markus and Nicola. They want success as much as we do. They are trying to build a successful club in a proper businesslike manner. That means not splashing out good money to buy instant and fragile success.

We Saints fans must not forget that we nearly lost our club only 6 months ago.

Let's be patient, and grateful, and nice to each other. COYR

Well said SC, though having patience and being grateful appears to warrant a personal attack by these newbies who seem to take every opportunity when a view isnt either hate filled toward opposing fans, condescending to Pards and the players, or generally respectful to fellow posters, to attack. Now what sort of low life would do that, hmmm let me think who are hate filled, hate our progression and fantastic manager and squad, and truly hate all the decent people on here, tricky one that!!

We have the most optimism we have had for many many years, a great manager, great ownership, a great future... and all people can think about doing is having a slating match with eachother, with a group of sensible posters thrown in the middle having to listen to it... clearly that has its shortfalls doesnt it? surely we should be united in our support for alan pardews red and white army instead of creating infighting? maybe there should just be a new fansite, founded by the normal people on here, Tirau could do an article for overseas saints fans every week, we could get some volunteers to contribute articles to post, and have a forum for it all... it would put a quick end to the infighting, not to mention give us some unbiased journalism from real supporters... just an idea? maybe we could talk with whoever used to run Saintsforever.com, that was a great fanzine back in the day! we can also have our own SW's! (how about 1+2=? that would sieve the thugs and the skates out surely?)

of course i remember where we were, but that does`nt mean we have got to be stagnant and forever saying we nearly wasn`t a club! we are a rich club and should be buying players from the ccc not loanee`s to get us out of this division, with some of the players we have in the squad we will be lucky to finish in the top 12!!
south west, what has happened has raised expectations for this season! Give the people who have done this some time and we may be stood next to each other eating posh Chelski pies some day? ps I'm nearer 35 stone and I'll need half your seat!
i take your point, i just get fed up when people slag you off when your opinion does`nt agree with theirs! i have supported saints for 36 years, thru good and bad( mainly bad) , perhaps we can share 3 seats, ha ha.
So, to reiterate your opinion, you have been supporting Saints for 36yrs yet in all that time its been mainly bad???!!!! Your discounting the 70's, 80's and 90's then, enough said and point proven.

Sopping coffee on a summery morning in NZ heading for 24c today.

This time at Saints has been much anticipated. Lots of us have shared posting in here from all over the world and the local fans have brought us that bit closer to home and closer to Saints. I'm enjoying this season immensely as only six months ago we honestly didn't think we'd have a team.

At the start half way would have been a great result for the end of the season. Hey but as we have reached half way and are half way up we do have a real chance to go for it.

If ever there were an excuse and a time to extend the budget it is now. We have the results but are suffering metal fatigue in the muscle department and need some help to make the most of the push on up.

We can probably make the play offs with the current squad but certainly need top notch recruits to take that 3rd spot to gain promotion this year.

Anyone who honestly thinks the owner and the management team aren't working tirelessly towards this at the moment must be out of their minds.

Readers here should realise that since the purchase of The Club one or two people use a few different user names to slag the owners and management. They offer nothing constructive. One admitted he's one of the so called fans that have a right to stand in the Northam screaming obscene abuse at our players and loudly boos what he says is poor performance. Personally I wish people like that would leave the club. I would honestly rather host honest enemy fans here than slaggers within.
Ignore them as much as possible, don't for goodness sake quote them one line retorts maybe and if you feel they are abusive report them.

This is my last full post regarding the slaggers within. Best to just let them show themselves up.

The Excitement is just beginning for Saints.. this is the business end of the season... lets get UP and take some loverly Silverware

Dan, we all know who the "real" fans are on this site, we regulars have all been posting on here for at least 10 months, and its really depressing that all you Saints overseas have to read the bile and hate that the skates spout on here, but we all know its down to jealousy and living very sad lives. But please do as most decent, articulate, respectful posters do and ignore them. To some of us, me included they are fair game and when they get too personal then a meet is easy to arrange, its happend twice off of here already this season, they have not come back. This soutwest moron is another one, dont think he will be brave enough however as he posts as articulately as a 10yr old Leigh Park inhabitant.

Guys - I moved here 12 months ago from Devon as a Plymouth fan through and through. However - I believe in at least following your local team and with The Saints being in as much trouble as they were last year - I attended most games. I have contiued to support them this year by paying and attending games. Unfortunately there are so many so-called Saints fans on this site that have not got a clue about the club or football in general. You need to get-behind the team and manager at every stage. AP and the new board no exactly what they are doing - Nobody here seems to know what goes on behind the scenes at football clubs and in my opinion they are doing just fine. Sit-tight and wait for the signings. Be grateful to be watching a competative team every week!
